a guy tried to fight me after the meeting i chaired tonight. a similar situation happened early in sobriety which i did not handle as well and ended up being arrested. the charges were later dropped but i learned so much from that experience. these are perfect opportunities to look at myself and what is disturbing me, then share that with somebody, then pray for willingness to humbly pray for these defect of character to be removed what happens after that i dont know but it works

i have fought and fought, reacted hastily on so many things in life and now i can be patient and tolerant if im doing the work

8 years clean today... What a journey.. I have things in my life today i would have never imagined... I came to see if i could learn to not use and ended up with much more! Wierd things like. Integrity. Hope. Faith. Love. Peace. Trust. JFT!!
I never have to use again! Recently relocated to socal and the fellowship has welcomed me open arms!

So I recently moved to a new area and I've been getting more active in the rooms here after spending some time away. It's amazing after all of these years that this program continues to humble me.

I'm so grateful to be where I am. The most rewarding thing for me lately has been sponsorship. I started working with a guy these last few weeks going over step 1 and it just blows my mind. I'm looking in a mirror. With every person I've ever sponsored. They keep it green for us And they don't even know it. It's an incredible feeling to be able to spread hope to others and at the same time get so much back.

If you haven't gone out lately and just been there for someone, expecting absolutely nothing in return, I suggest you get out there. Start giving. The positivity we project outward always finds it's way back to us.

I have quit tobacco products, smoking 3 years ago, chewing little over year ago, thanks to smokey mountain chew, have now quit all drugs to lose weight, and become fitter, thanks to the gym life!

IronJulius's picture

i picked up VIII year chip tonight. right now im reflecting on this recovery journey, different stages to where i am now and the work that still needs to be done. how some of those patterns can still pop up when im sober. i take a meeting to detox at the hospital so im reminded often on where i was and where i hope/pray i never return to the hopeless state of mind and body. Life has a new meaning and purpose I just got to keep doing the work and grow

Awesome bro.cant wait till i get to put up a post like that.i cant even string a week together at the moment.and my training is suffering because of it.keep on keeping on bro

Roid Noid's picture

Truth be told im always a few seconds away from using, just takes one bad decision, wrong place right time and im done. I feel like I have bought some time at this point of my recovery, but I thought that before and ended up using again. So I changed every fucken thing this time, places I go, people i know, things I do, thoughts I have. People have told me you cant change your thinking, I say bullshit, change everything else and your thinking will change too, Guaranteed I dont think nothing like I used too. Its a life change, scary and awkward at first, but just walk through those feelings and know that there is a light on the other side so long as you dont use no matter fucking what...Change those things my friend, make it so the drugs arent right there in front of you and you dont got fiends calling you, misery loves company! toss out that phone and get one filled with people in recovery, get rid of the ole lady, family, or anybody else that jeopardizes your recovery. And what ever you do, keep going to meetings and trying to get clean. Do all the shit they say to do in meetings. Good luck

House's picture

2step talks in how it works and why if we take action that our thinking will change. So i am with you. I believe in the literature cause everyhhing i read has happened from staying clean to using. 7 yrs is a miracle dude, fckn awesome and wish i could be at your celebration. I wish i never threw away my 9 and change but like you said it is a fight everyday but it does get easier. The disease is all over me everday being a new commer again but all i can do is think about the person i want to be instead of the person i was.(scumbag) thanks for the hope RN;)

Love your posts in here big guy. I go to enough meetings to separate the guys that walk it, from the guys that just talk it. I can tell you speak the language of the heart.

And it's true, all we have is today. But as my sponsor likes to say, "They give out those fucking chips for a reason." I'm a lot further from a drink or a drug than I was 8 years ago and I'll stay that way as long as I keep on keeping on.

Lastly, why is your karma zero again?

Roid Noid's picture

lots of years of H&I, love those meetings where its not really a meeting and new addicts can ask you questions about things in your story, just a different setting where you can give back to a group of hungry, confused, scared addicts. Best feeling in the world to see the lights start to come up, these guys are a few days into treatment, been listening to counselors and videos and workbooks. And then we come in once every 2 weeks during their 4 week dryout, and they see its real. This shit really works, and then the hope and fear really starts to set in, and like good addicts they want the answers right fucking now, so i feed em the real shit. LOVE H&I....I just took over Birthday Night, aside from H&I its the best damn commitment I have had. Done it three times now over the last 6 years. 1st year wasnt all that, i asked people to help me find speakers, never heard them before, just asked them on the phone and they came. 2nd time I took it different ballgame, every single speaker I found myself, none of them from my town. I drove hours in every direction going to meetings looking for speakers, had a fucking blast. 3rd time im gonna one up it again, this year me and the wife are gonna plan out our meeting schedule and grab a hotel for the weekend. So saturday we head out to a city far away and grab a 6, 7 and 830 meeting, crash at a hotel. site see on sunday, grab as many meeting as we can and come back late sunday night.

Recovery is what you make of it, put in the hard work and reap the benefits. I went to 14 meetings a week for my first 16 months, thats like 160 in 90days 5 times over! no bullshit!

once a week I still go out with the guys after my home group meeting. its just maintenance for me at this point, but i keep doing it.

My points are zero because I dont want new guys feeling that they have to have points, and because karma corrupts the site.

NoWeakAces's picture

H&I is the nitty gritty. It's as close to what Bill and Bob did as we get now days. Way more high bottom guys than there used to be. If you want to reach the low bottom, skid row guys, H&I is where it's at. I got sober in a homeless shelter. A far cry from the resort in the woods my parents paid for after my first fuck up. I love drunks and dope fiends. I understand them. We are truly the chosen ones. If you're ever passing through Bama, shoot me a PM. I know where all the real drunks meet.

As always, thank you for your commitment to your sobriety.

yeah man. I was living in my car and got real sick. my mom and her boyfriend took me in and gave me another chance. I have been wanting to use so bad but been looking for a job, hitting the gym and eating and sitting still. I know its not what I want. I lost everything and will give my life to shoot a bag. I feel positive though and ready to love myself again cause I did not give a fck. I was like Biggie "ready to die'

Until you find a jobby job, get your ass somewhere and volunteer. Do something to help somebody. It'll get you outta your own head and give you a reason to feel good about yourself. PM me any time man. Nobody does this shit alone.

Hey everyone.

I was reading a few posts today and realized there were a number of us who have had past substance problems and then found this thread.

I guesse long story short, I started drinking when I was 15 which went to pot then xtc and everything else. Ended up doing heroin and spent a long time stuck on that one. In fact on my 21st birthday I got arrested for disorderly conduct after scoring dope in a bad area. Lol cop opened the door to the cruiser and said "oh, happy birthday".

Anyways Im 32 did the whole methadone deal (couple a times) and am now doing really well and looking to get off suboxone. On .5mg now.

So anyways, hi.

ShroomMan's picture

Well I fucked up, haven't been on eroids for a while. I relapsed hard...I was doing so well before to. I lost so much of my gains turned skinnyish now i'm kind of fat and stable on suboxone. These past 2 years went hard on heroin mostly with some meth/cocaine sometimes and pretty much lost everything. Was in jail for a while to.

I'm broke now and owe money. I need to get back into the gym, it's one of the only things that really helped me. When I first joined this site I was doing so good staying clean, while going to the gym and eating healthy. I'm in quite the shitty place right now...fuck. Lost everything I worked hard for, hopefully I can get it back. My health has gotten pretty bad, I have low cortisol my blood tests show and low test.

Little rant, I'm back though....

IronJulius's picture

Glad you made it back brother. Yesterday a guy I met in a 12 step program died I also seen him at the gym and we were FB friends not real close but ive heard a good bit of his story/struggles. Probably why on in this forum tonight because im grateful. I chair a detox meeting at the local hospital and get reminded regularly of where I came from. Ive heard everything I put before my recovery I will lose.

Today's a new day my friend...Don't look back!

bigouch's picture

I made 8 years clean and sober from narcotics and alcohol today.. I can honestly say it has been the best 8 years of my life and I don't think I would change a thing, I'm there for the people in my life who need me.. It's an emotional day for me when I think back on everything that has led me to where I am now...Although a lot of people see me as just a guy that goes to the gym regular if they only knew what it has done for me the past 8 years..One day at a time!

IronJulius's picture

congrats brother 9-25-07 is my sobriety date

ItallianStallion89's picture

Thats what I do brother. I go to the gym and then a meeting when i feel like using. My drug of choice isn't meth. Mine was heroin. I had been shootin dope since I was 18. Yeah I know that's fuckin young to be sticking needles in my arm. Just know you aren't alone brother

Flexual's picture

I can't stop drinking coffee. Sometimes 3 to 4 cups a day. It didn't matter much before but AAS raises my BP into mild hypertensive range. I gotta make the switch to green tea somehow. But I just finished my third cappuccino for the day...forgive me.

Roid Noid's picture

I still drink a cup of coffee in the morning but i switched to sun tea about two months ago, never knew tea could get you so jacked.

Awesome! I love this site more and more everyday!

House's picture

I wanted to shoot some meth the other day. I had to play the tape all the way through. Isolation, dereliction, jails, institutions, and just complete moral decay is not worth what I think will only be just one. I made a meeting and shared. Hit the gym and got swole. Feelings change theres no need for me to try to change them with a drug. We do recover!!

"Feeling change, there's no need for me to try to change them with drugs."

I like that brother.

NoWeakAces's picture

Some folks say do 90 in 90. If you're a real alcoholic like me or a real dope fiend like me, you better have your ass in a meeting every single fucking day for a year. Call your damn sponsor every single fucking day. Work those steps as fast and as honestly as you can. What you think might only be one shot, might be your last shot.

I don't know you, but I know drug addicts and alcoholics. Our stories differ in the details, but we are the same. I joke around on this board a lot, we are not a glum lot. But about alcoholism and addiction, I'm deadly fucking serious. Hit me up in PM any time bro. I love to talk to addicts, they are my people. I'm up to at least 11pm cst every week night, and a lot later on the weekends. Holler.
