+ 28 Blood Pressure Help

ad

Every once in a while We see a blood pressure question and the truth is, its probably the biggest health hazard when it comes to doing what we do. Most of the young guys running gear, I was one once upon a time, just look at roid rage as kinda cool often and dont really realize it is likely the result of high blood pressure. High blood pressure could be responsible for a large percentage of all disease related to cardiovascular or organ issues. We should talk about it more and in my opinion there should be no single person running gear without a BP monitor. I figured it out many years after running my first gear, I thought rage just meant I was a badass! Lol. So anyway my answer is cardio early and often, eat as clean as possible and take my omega3 fish oil along with a few other heart supps....hopefully everyone can drop in their control methods and thoughts. I happen to believe even blood pressure medication is a good thing if you need it when compared to just letting it get out of hand. It is depreciating you which is the opposite of what we are all trying to do to begin with. A motor that runs nice and smooth that granny drives will last longer than one in Goths ride given he just boils the tires at every intersection and thinks he's so fuckin cool with his dollar store jewelry and his felt hat and gold tip cane! TELL US WHATS WORKING FOR YOU....

Just got my first bp monitor for personal use as I've been using the seated one at CVS and learned they aren't meant for above average arm sizes lol

Got a 158/80 at CVS and was like oh god that's horrible, picked up a bp monitor off Amazon that goes all the way up to 20 inch arms! (Soon I'm stuck at 18)

Did my first morning fasted BP test with it and got back a 132/78 which I'm not perfectly content with BUT thankful that it's something I can work with

Thought I was developing polycythemia of some sort with those CVS numbers and I was freaking out

Ok, an update on my own BP. Due to my shoulder refusing to heal I basically took the last six months or so off from the gym. (Plus I was curious what would happen) I also a few months back bought a traditional sauna and use it at least four days a week. I still take 10mg lisinipril . Before even at 10mg I was running high 130’s low 140’s over low 90’s. Well between the sauna and dropping nearly 30lbs of mass my BP looks way better. I am running like 124 over 82 fairly consistently for a couple months now. Btw still doing 125mg test per week

One other detail. I have not touched fast food since March. Rarely eat out. Cook at home

press1's picture

Have you had the shoulder looked at to see if it is Rotator cuff related or Joint related? I can defiantely believe that loosing weight has reduced BP, imagine how these 300lb guys must constantly feel also on considerable steroid cycles Shok

I don’t believe it ever fully tore but you guys all know how shoulders will stay angry for a few months , maybe even six. This time it was a year. I started shooting it with bp- and it got a lot better but then I made the mistake of playing beach volleyball last January and it went really bad. It feels pretty good now and today I officially started lifting again. Gonna build up slowly and honestly I have no intention of getting as big as I was. 220 or so is a good and comfortable weight for me I think. 250 was straining my entire system bro. Keep in mind I am over fifty now

press1's picture

Great to hear you have started lifting again, I bet the world has taken on a new dimension again today in your mind. Even if you are just going through your old warm up weights again it still feels brilliant Smile For sure I bet playing volleyball was possibly one of the worst things you could have done to aggrevate it again with all the overhead movement especially the whipping type action. Has business been going well as I know you were putting a lot into that again?

We had a good year but price increases have been constant and they are calling for more after the 1st. I don’t know how much more consumers can handle. On the plus side I am well capitalized if things do come to a grinding halt.

Yesterday at the gym I overheard one of the older guys talking about how his blood pressure is naturally just 165 over 120 and he doesn't take anything for it or do cardio. I have no idea how you can just let something like that go. Now I feel like I am working out next to a ticking time bomb.

BroadwayBulk's picture

The worst thing about high blood pressure is that you are getting used to it too quick and literally the next day you will feel yourself okay, when the blood pressure still be high... Really afraid of it, taking readings twice a day just to be safe

press1's picture

Once it gets high the 2 main things I noticed is the heart thudding in your chest and the really bad shortness of breath during training during big exercises like deadlifts. You will get the red stars in your vision once you begin hitting the big weights too!

I am thinking of giving Losartan a go - are you in the UK mate and get it on prescription? What dose do you take?

In a promo × 1
mash'D taters's picture

I agree, I take losartan and it helps keep my BP down. I used to take ACE inhibitors, but I slowly started getting allergic reactions to it, and it took a while to figure out.

press1's picture

I've seen a few guys taking this now, I take Ramipril as its what my Doctor prefers to prescribe unless you get the ACE cough. I've tried Telmisartan too. Its funny as when I tried each of these for the first time I felt like shit then on the second dose have been fine ever since. Was it just the sexual loss you didn't like about the Telmisartan? A lot of BP meds seem to cause this side, I assume its because of lower BP into the penis Lol

What mg of ramipril does doc have you on? I’m in 5mg daily my self and feel so much better on it I was struggling with constant shortness of breath but seems to of done the trick for me

Just an update, I have been on lisinopril for probably seven months now and it is working pretty well at 10mg per day. Almost no side effects other than the first week or so I got light headed a couple times, but no big deal. Thanks to all of you who reached out and recommended it. Compared to beta blockers it is way better imo

Onetimehitta's picture

Using that myself after years of no BP self/care and it’s made a huge difference after 4 months not the typical 120/80 but better than the 175/110 I walked in with lol

GrowMore's picture

That’s great news mate. I haven’t looked back since I found lisinopril. Stuff is also cheap as chips

Well after I posted this I went to get my refill and my bp was up a bit high, and now been checking for a few days and I am hanging high 130’s over high 80’s low 90’s. Not sure if I just in the last month built an immunity or what? Gonna watch it for a few more days and then decide to up the ride or switch to something else :(

GrowMore's picture

Perhaps a silly question but has anything else changed, are you still flat out at work?

10mg is at the lower end of dose I believe. Ive been running 12.5 of Hydrochlorothiazide in conjunction with Lisinopril, whether I’m TRT or blasting. My BP averages high 120’s and 80’s.

Yeah still buried but nothing has changed.

The only thing that really works to stop my BP once it goes the kind of high posted last four-days is to stop, and then it takes two weeks to come down. It takes a really abused cycle (like me running it 32-weeks on a planned 16-week cycle) to get into that kind of trouble, so the concept of 'chronic' high BP just reads to me like a year-round cycle. I don't judge, but I will input that having read hundreds, and maybe thousands of articles on steroid use, sides, illnesses and death, only prolonged use really hits the charts regularly. I have never actually found an overdose, and I have little evidence of death by misadventure where other drugs were not involved.

I think that even if you 'control' the BP' you still have 'alterations of the cardiovascular system' (Regul Toxicol Pharmacol. 2010 Jun;57(1):117-23. doi: 10.1016/j.yrtph.2010.02.001.) Which normally presents problems later in your life. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20153798/

If you are in any position to be honest with your doctor, he/she is going to be in best position to review your actual records and history and give you real advise. I doubt PDR is going to have cross-reference to AAS as so many still see it as 'the devil'.

I don't know if you have ever really experienced anyone with vascular dementia, but it will affect your view of stroke. I get lectures on stroke frequently with my choice of steroids and dose and many times I just put the warnings off. I had the experience of getting stuck caring for an 'end-of-life' person with vascular dementia and it gave me a new respect, as well as a new attitude. High BP can definitely lead to stroke and vascular dementia. Hell, the stroke is bad enough!

The link above came from this article/study https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10641914/ Basically 34-deaths in AAS users, 12 were related to cardiovascular changes. So, probably a side question to ask is, 'will controlling my BP stop cardiovascular changes in my body?'

The only thing that brings my BP down to normal during cycle is stopping cycle immediately. By the time I get that kind of BP, I am usually months over my stopping deadline, double the doses I declared I would be at, and to be more honest, eating a bit dirty because I have, by that time, reached a large physique with a low BF and it all contributes. There 'is' an addiction and when we just balance the question: My BP is at life threatening levels, but I want to keep cycling.....' This is addictive behavior. I suffer from it.

In a promo × 1
press1's picture

Very honest of you to say all of this, I think a lot of us on here suffer with this kind of addictive mentality even though we know its detrimental to our health long term. Being completely natural is always going to be 10 times more good for our bodies than injecting 20 times the amount of hormone we are designed to run. But its easy to see how we can think like this too - How many of us grew up as young kids obsessed with watching films like Rambo, Terminator, Superman, He-Man, and WWE? We were all wanting to be big and strong for a long time, ultimately its hardwired into most males at birth. Then along comes a taste of that little needle and within a few weeks you have transformed into something you have never ever seen before - all of a sudden you are the Hero out of those films. Going back to being the average man walking the street again after experiencing that feeling is extremely hard to do.

It took 14-weeks to shed the fat from my back... no idea why, but it was the only large dimensional change I had since March, but now my chest is going up and the waste is going down..... the wife is looking at me like a drunk looks at a kebab spool..... and that is why I like fitness! Fucking 20kg of fat... how on earth did I let that happen? Waste line is going down now, and I am wearing those 31/31 Levi's... super hero... maybe not, but having a woman look at me like a piece of meat does boost my ego! I'm going to start packing on the muscle next week and I am a bit excited! Just had to shout, it feels so good!

Great read and feedback guys, Im 35 and i just got put on lisinopril today at 10mg because my past 2 appointments my bp has been 160/100. I know its due to AAS. I knew I'd find some good info here. 1 question, does BP medication work pretty well while still on AAS? I don't want to quit the game but also don't wanna leave a wife and 3 kids behind either. This is all new to me, I'm gunna switch to short ester cycles from now on if i do continue to juice. Any feedback is appreciated fellas

I'm a benzapril man myself. Ace inhibitor can work for me if I keep my weight down a bit.

Pale's picture

With the assistance of covid I went from 248 down to 236 and my BP dropped with it. I am 130/88 now versus 148/99

Pale's picture

But now a month later weight is still 236-237 but BP is back 150/98 range on the first check. It always goes down a bit on the second attempt. I am getting serious about dropping weight now however so we will see.

Halsey's picture

Good deal, extra weight kills my bp too.

olylifter00's picture

Been trying to control my bp for years. At the age of 22 I was diagnosed with hypertension, now 27. Current meds as of yesterday were 20mg lisinopril and 10mg amlodopine. Just yesterday evening I had my doctor change lisinopril for 40mg telmisartan. Read tons of benefit of that drug, including increasing endurance at higher mgs?? Currently averaging around 150/88 all day.

I eat my cloves of garlic, liss 5x/week 30 mins, fish oil, eat cleaner than anyone I know, quit drinking, lots of water, lowered my salt, decreased my carbs, keep all other organs in check with bloodwork every 3 months etc. just apparently have horrible genetics regarding BP.

I’ll keep ya guys posted regarding the telmisartan

In general blood pressure is elevated by one of three things: constriction of blood vessels, increased heart rate, and viscosity of the blood. So when looking at root causes we generally assess factors like renal function, cardiac function, and respiratory function. The majority of the time it is either fluid volume insufficiency and the kidneys are working to preserve volume by constricting vessels which makes the heart have to work harder to circulate that volume against resistance, poor metabolic regulation (diabetes or hyperlipidemia), or resistance from pulmonary pathways causing fluid to back up into the heart. So my advice would be to keep a close eye on fluid volume intake by monitoring urine output, clarity, and turbulence this will let you know how your kidneys are, regulating your glycemic index and trying to lower your cholesterol (niacin works wonders) and obviously not smoking or ingesting too much salt (salt is pretty much added to all the shit they sell in cans or bottles).

Very under talked about topic in my opinion. Something that has just hit my radar and take notice so any advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated!
