Lets hear your recent PR's

ad

Or whatever accomplishments, it's all good. Today after 6 weeks of working at it I hit 4x10 doing body weight skull crushers. Next goal will be 4x10 elevated. That is my new favorite tricep exercise bar none.

After dealing with jumpers knee for months and going easy on squatting I read an article about this olympic weight lifting coach that only has his people do box squats until competition days since parallel is what you want for competition anyway and it protects them from going too deep and possibly injuring themselves.

So a few weeks ago I decided to experiment with the box and see how my right knee responded. To my complete delight my knee was almost painless. So it didn't take me long to start cranking on the weight. Well today I did pretty good working my way up to 455 for 3 and 475 for one. The second rep at 475 was when I finally hit the wall, lol. I definitely feel like 500 is within reach.

Damn bro, that's really good. I'm not even close to those numbers. I'm only 53 years young so I still got some time to get there. Lol. Of course I haven't done box squats for a long time. I do ass/to/grass (bodybuilding style) and don't go over 250, usually 5x5 every 2 min., then leg extensions 3x12 w/180 every 60 sec, then standing calf raises 3x40 reps every 30 sec, then body squats, 3x20 reps but I start at the bottom, go to a 3/4 position, pause for 2 sec then lower for a count of 5, every 2 min. I'll change it up after 6 wks to keep it fresh.

Pale's picture

I haven't done box squats in forever but after reading that article and dealing with a bad knee it has made a world of difference. Now truthfully I could just stop at parallel and do the same but it seems to be really making a difference so what the hell. As long as I have this jumpers knee issue tho I am done with ass to grass.

Ruger44m's picture

I'd be interested in reading that article if you have a link to it. When you're referring to Jumper's knee should I assume that you were an Airborne Ranger in the Army?

Pale's picture

No, just too old to be doing box jumps and found out the hard way. I will see if I can find it, it was a T-nation article.

Ruger44m's picture

Lol... my bad. Jumpers knee(s) was what Paratroopers used in reference to knee injuries from too many jumps.

While searching for it I just found this one and will add more as I read them.

This here is the one that got me started back in this direction.

Looks like I have some interesting reading to do. Thanks,... I appreciate it.

Pale's picture

My pleasure, I honestly prefer to talk about lifts and techniques any day over juice. That rush you get from a new PR lift or set keeps me coming back for more. Hell, even a massive pump turns me on,lol

Ruger44m's picture

Looks like I'll be switching to box squats for a while and see how I respond. Thanks for the articles.

Well damn body weight skull rushers! You must got some cannons! I repped out 315 for 22 reps... My pr on squat was 455...Felt like I had the weight of the world on my shoulders!

Right on. I have been having an issue with my right knee, possible meniscus so I have been really careful with squats lately. After failing to hit 510 for a new deadlift PR I have backed off and instead have been working for reps and speed at lighter weights for a bit.

Bulkdaddy's picture

My knees the next day are really sore.. I never max out or go above 365 for that reason and sometimes not even higher than that. I just go for reps. Actually on that set of bench I strained something in the corner of my arm pit closer to my upper chest. I do that every once and a while and takes about 1 months to heal. I can still do incline though with no problems.

Last cycle I was at my strongest coming off cycle. Bench hit 355. Squats 455. Never go more then 315 on dips (50/50 my back goes out if I go much more). Weighted pull ups with 70 lbs plus body weight at 224 lbs, weighted deeps at 60 lbs for reps. As I get older I'm not concerned with all out strength as much as I used to be and I'm more concerned with not injuring myself so I can lift the next day. I like leaving the gym knowing I absolutely tore down the muscle for growth then if I out lift the guy next to me.

Workouts are getting more intense these days. I'm starting to find my motivation again. Training 1 day on , 1 day off sometimes 1 day on, 2 days off, to capitalize on my rest and food. Anyways did shoulders tonight. Pre exhausting with my lateral raises on a late raise machine, doing them uni lateral aka one side at a time. Then headed over to my dumbbell presses , for the first time in a long time I started with the 100s for 16, 110s for 12, 125s for 8 and than 25+ with the 75s unilaterally. Then went on to my fronot raises , lateral raises and rear raises started with 35s for 16 to 20 reps, front raises and lateral raises were done unilaterally. Rear raises seated were done together. Got up to 45 lbs for strict sets of 12 reps, which if your doing them correctly are pretty serious. At the end I did each exercise to failure with 25 lbs. Then hit some triceps. Was in there an hour , Intense , low rest periods and moderate weight and volume. In the end I couldn't raise my arms. I trained carefully but head the mentality where I was going until it felt like shit was going to melt right off the bone....

Its been quite some time since I have been this driven and my physique is showing it , enough where people are starting to ask when I will compete.

Nice!

I did squats today changing out all 4 tennis balls on my walker. My previous PR was 2.

I then took a nap.

Here is a link to DP's "successful" max squat the other day. Boom! ;-)

I saw that, lol

Squatted 375 for 6 reps last night (3 sec negatives). Probably could have done more but I just banged out a few more sets with that. Never remember doing that much before.

VIKING EVOLUTION's picture

Thats good Bodybuilding range weight for proper squatting........... when i see uber stupid amounts of weight used for squats (bodybuilder style).. i laugh!....... its just fkn stupid and highly dangerous.

Blown knees, blown backs, hernias, ........... nah! not recommended.

After i gave myself Testicular Torsion from stupid heavy squatting i got the smarts real fast and altered my approach to loading bars up.

Pale's picture

I agree and usually limit myself to 315 but I have been able to cripple myself just using 135 and doing pause squats with high reps.

Makwa's picture

I was hoping to just get 315 up for 6 six reps since it has been awhile since a threw a few plates on each side. Usually just bang out 15+ reps/set with lighter weight but I wanted to switch things up a bit and go a little heavier. Racked 315 and I was hardly out out breath so I figured lets see what I can do.

Pale's picture

Right on, I get a wild hair once and awhile and will go up to 405 but that is a rare event. As I have gotten stronger sometimes it feels right to just push it. We all know, especially us older guys, there are limits

VIKING EVOLUTION's picture

thats it bro.............. 20 reps @135 for instance = way more tonnage/volume.

Thats what Bodybuilding is ALL about.

Makwa's picture

Walking a little stiff today. I think tomorrow I will really be paying for it.

ttinnovated's picture

Nothing really impressive in terms of PRs at the my end.
I was suffering from knee problems around a year ago which hampered my ability to do squats.
Currently doing some rehab, but I did manage to get my squat back to 315lbs as of today. I'm 170lbs at the moment, used to be able to do close to 450lbs but hopefully I'll get back there in the coming months

Pale's picture

That is stil impressive bro, consider the fact that 99% of adult men in this country cannot do even 315.

Catalyst's picture

705 in the squat rack this morning. Right on the edge with that one and very close to blacking out as I racked it. Not actually a personal best, but the last time I touched 700+ was a very long time and a lot of grey hair ago.

bolt781's picture

Maybe not a personal best...still an accomplishment seeing the struggles you've endured! And fyi...700 is nasty!

Catalyst's picture

Right on the edge there though mate, another couple of pounds and I'd have been out I think.

Pale's picture

Awesome! Way above my top end bro.

Catalyst's picture

I've tolerated my mother in law being in my house twice in the space of a week. She's that high maintenance even my dogs don't like her.

That's not just a personal best, that's tolerance epitomised Smile

kodiakGRRL's picture

werent you trying to adopt her out not long ago???

Catalyst's picture

I couldn't afford ed's price for taking her away once he started talking six figures. I even hid her in the recycling bin, they refused to take her away as well. I'm out of options. I knew we should have given her a fake address when we moved.....

Pale's picture

Just admit it, you two love each other. Smile
