I'm having the worst fucking anxiety I've had in years. My doctor started me on this medication, zyprexa for bipolar disorder. All was fine for the first week but now it's caused some major problems at work. I work nights, 5p to 5 a. I take my med as soon as I get home in the am and get ready to go to sleep. It usually takes a few hours to wind down and fall asleep then I'm up by 2, 3 at the latest. I wake up groogy but by the time I get to work and get started I feel OK. This past week I've been getting so sleepy after getting to work that I started knodding off. I've been sent home twice now and I can tell my supervisor isn't happy at all. I feel like in about to be fired over this. I was unemployed for a year and 3 months before landing this job and it would be a complete disaster if I got let go. I've decided to stop taking the shit. I hope monday I can go in and sit down with my superiors and discuss this before they make any decisions. Im a damn hard worker. This has me so upset and scared that I can't even sleep. My head is pounding and all I can think about is what would I do if I get fired. I can't afford to lose this job.

I was recently out on an anti-psychotic drug, zyprexa for bipolar disorder. Things have been great for the most part. My mind no longer races, I haven't blown money on shit I don't need. Relationship with my wife is better the it has been in over a year. One thing that is fucking me up is that it makes me groggy as shit while in at work I work graveyard. 5p to 5a, 5 days a week. My doc haz me taking my dose when I get home every morning around 530a. When I wake up for work around 2p, it takes me a good hour to fully wake up. Well, for some reason, around my 9p break I start feeling sleepy again. I have a hard time keeping from falling asleep while in working. Last night, I was sent home for this. This is actually the second time it's happened. I work for the oil industry building trees, frac valves, and heads. I understand the safety issue but fuck, I HATE missing work. I've ALWAYS been a hard worker. I out work guys now that are half my age. I kinda get the feeling my boss thinks im using drugs because imof the way he was starring at my eyes and shitd. Being sent home this time has really got to me. I need to be stable. I need my moods to be in check, my mind to be focused but I also need to work and make money for my family. I really hope my doctor can get me adjusted weather she lowers my dose or changes meds all together. Anyway, I'm just ranting......

Hey man I kno it’s been a while since u posted but just wanted to let u kno ur not alone with that. I was on it for a while myself. I found anything over 5mg I’m too sleepy and I eat too much. As in everything. When I was on 15mg I gained 13 lbs in a week so they took me right off that. So it’s good for bulking. Very good lol. Later on down the road I was on on it for years but the low dose just aided the other meds. I saw u were on Wellbutrin now and I’m no doctor but if it doesn’t work as well and the zyprexa does maybe try a smaller dose. Best of luck

bolitekurac's picture

Stop drinking if you are.

monkeywrench66's picture

No alcohol. March 18th will be 10 years sober. Went to the doctor today and was switched to Wellburtin.

IrishJerk's picture

Good for you It has less side effects!
If it helps, nothing helped keep my mind from racing, so I use it at work to solve the problems nobody else can. I can’t stop it but I can use for good instead of evil. :-)
Good luck bro. I know it can be overwhelming at times.

monkeywrench66's picture

Thanks. I'm wondering what'll happen if it really does stop my mind from racing. I'm an artist and a drummer. A racing mind comes in handy sometimes when I have to think and change up things on the fly.

Just out of curiosity how is your meal planning and eating routine on the night shift?

monkeywrench66's picture

I eat a big breakfast when I gwet home around 5:30. Usually wheat toast, 3 egg whites, bacon, and some fruit. Either a banana or a handful of grapes. As soon. As I get up around 2 I eat again. I'll eat a bowl of oatmeal and drink a high calorie protein shake. I found this super mass gainer at avademy. 1280 calories, 52g protein. Mixed with 32oz while milk it's supposedly around 1900 cals. I'll admit, I really don't eat clean. After getting to work at 5 we have a 6pm safety meeting. I'll eat a pack of tuna with crackers while that goes on. 9p first break. I'll eat baked or grilled chicken with Brown rice. 12p lunch. I usually have 4 pb and js and 2 small oranges or an apple with peanut butter. 3a break I'll snack on trail mix, eat a banana Ana and have another protein shake.

Hunter2400's picture

I don't know what your macro split is or your BMR, Calorie needs and so on but just by what you've told us, your meal plan seems pretty balanced for the most part. And changing your meals and meal timing may or may not help. Alot of factors can play in to your lethargic feeling. And we all know sleeping during the day is a huge negative on getting proper REM sleep. Add in the medication dose and timing and you have entirely different obstacle that I'm not qualified to help with. But if you want food help I can for sure give you some ideas to try out just to see if it helps. You definitely need to talk to your doc about it as well

monkeywrench66's picture

Help with food would be great. Some kind of better plan, healthier. More fish for sure because my doc said my cholesterol was pretty low. My life is hectic, busy. Kids, ages from 20 and in college to 4 and a complete terror. I work out M, W, F right after work. So from about 539 til 6, 615. Then its home, scary down a breakfast and try to pass out to get enough sleep.

Hunter2400's picture

Overworked, out of time and stressed.....i feel you dude.

I can definitely provide an outside opinion and help with food and diet.....no I'm not a dietitian or nutritionist lol so please know that this is just advice from my personal experiences.
FR sent so we can dig in further on your stats and goals

monkeywrench66's picture

Accepted.

JARHEAD2's picture

I hope all turns out ok with work. They walk people out of our plant & they’re not allowed back when caught sleeping. Two things that you must do ASAP..
1. Talk to your supervisor & explain you’re on a new medication & having drowsy side effects & let him know your contacting the Dr.
2. You guessed it.. contact the Dr & express your concerns & especially with work. Often the side effects subside after a week or two. Hopefully this is your case or he can find you something better.
Good luck brother & let us know how it goes!!

monkeywrench66's picture

Thanks bro. My supe is really cool. A good guy. We have mutual friends outside of work sonit was easy for for me to open up to him and be honest about .y disorder when I first decided to get help again. He is pretty understanding but from a safety point of view his hands are tied. I offered to kiss in a cup immediately but he's been keeping up with me a bit. He said he was just concerned because my first 90 days I was kicking ass the 20 something's were having a hard time beeping up faith the "old man." Lol. Said for the past week I've slowed down tremendously and he's noticed me looking wore out. That's about the ti.e I started this med. He told me to take ti.e off to get it worked out and keep him posted. There's NO WAY I'm losing this great job over this. I'd rather be on no meds the. Be on meds and unemployed. I'll get it worked out tho. I really appreciate the feedack.

Hunter2400's picture

Great info. I too work shift work in an industrial plant and can relate to the rules and regulations around Safety and also the struggle of sleep or the lack thereof. I found that meal planning plays a huge factor in my energy and mental focus when working the back shifts. Smaller meals spread out has helped me stay focused and energized instead of two or three large meals. I realize monkey wrench is dealing with a little more but maybe this can help

monkeywrench66's picture

I get 7 to 8 hours of hard sleep at home. But on this medicine wake up groggy as hell. Weird thing is, when I arrive at 5 I'm all good but as soon as 1030/11p hits I become this zombie. If I sit, it's game over. I'm O U T. Eating more, smaller meals is a good idea. Maybe cutting out that heavy, high calorie shake too.

JARHEAD2's picture

That’s a great point bro!

IrishJerk's picture

I feel for you brother, as far as being groggy the first hour I have the same problem and always have. The only thing that I found that works for me is getting up an hour early. I know it sucks and sometimes an hour isn’t enough for me to wake up even when I bang down a pot of coffee.
Shift work does it to me to. I am actually a morning person at night because of my screwed up internal clock.
But as we both know that you have to put in the time before you can get on a better shift.
Having a family and working night shift is hard. I missed allot but once they get older they will appreciate your sacrifices for them.

monkeywrench66's picture

I've ALWAYS been a "night owl" as my mom would say. Being in bands for years made it a lot w.easier to work through the night but I do miss my wife and son. Getting up at 2 and leaving the house by 415 just isn't enough time. And my weekend goes by so fast plus I'm wore the hell out from the week. Thanks for the feedback bro. Thank you all. It feels good to hear similar people dealing with similar things.

monkeywrench66's picture

how do I join? Just start posting? I have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Some days I'm manic as fuck and go blowing money like crazy and just like that I get so down on myself that I think everyone would be better off without me. My wife is having to suffer through this with me and it kills me Because she deserves DMSO much more than this.

Hunter2400's picture

Sounds rough for sure....no judgement here either. I'm no doctor nor do I suffer from depression but just throwing this out there....maybe try meditation for 30 minutes a day?? I know that sounds benign but it may help and wouldn't cost anything to try. Just trying to help

monkeywrench66's picture

Yea, it's a challenge. I'm on meds now so thinks are leveling out. I'm much more calm and level headed. If I try meditation, I definitely have to find a nice, quiet place. A place WITHOUT my wild 4 year old son. Lol

Hunter2400's picture

I hear you on that....I have three myself and there's never a quite place in the house! I realize meditation is not a cure by any means just thought it may help calm things down. Glad to hear the medication is helping tho! If you ever need an ear to rant too hit me up on a pm I'd be happy to listen

monkeywrench66's picture

Thanks brother.

While I agree that the drugs can lead to worsening conditions & addiction, a crutch is a good thing to have when you need one. While you’re unable to walk without a crutch & being immobile isn’t an option, I believe a crutch is a good option. When you’re better & no longer need it, do away with it. If used as it’s intended for the time it’s intended, it can be a great help. Also your idea of anxiety & depression is an individualistic circumstances, meaning that it’s true in some cases, but not all. Both anxiety & depression are hard to cope with & can make someone feel trapped in a pit for life, but with proper channels, focus & perseverance both can be overcome & life can be restored drug free.

It took me literally years to kick the Xanax habit sometimes I would have to eat a couple of bars just to go to sleep. It is a vicious cycle

JARHEAD2's picture

Bro you’re not kidding!! I’d actually snort them while I was chewing some up..... I honestly found out after getting clean that some of the reasons that I was taking Xanax were actually side effects of the Xanax. It’s a viscous circle ... congrats on kicking brotha!!!
