+ 2 62 and complete tear of rotator cuff

ad

Hi guys, been body building and crusing and blasting for 3 years. Lost over 100 lbs adn got muscled. Friend insisted I try chest presses. Bad idea. Lifting only 140 (with probably bad form by myself) my right shoulder had intense pain suddenly. Went home and thought fuck it..Im not hurt! So tried a few push ups...heard a LOUD snap in right shoulder and immediately the arm collapsed. Can use it, hurts like hell though. MRI yest showed complete tear adn have me scheduled for ortho appt and probable surgery. Got insurance ,but am freaking out about losing it all esp at my age.

Any suggestions guys, other than going to lower body adn treadmilling? Anyone rec. any particular steroid or HGH that might help? I take Proviron, test e about 600 a week adn arimidex. Have taken HGH for about 6 months, but none for a few months cause I can't afford it.

What could I take to assist with the healing after surgery? I guess my body is reminding me I am not 30...crap. I felt like it though the past 3 years! And wife on BioIdentical Hormones past three months, I am surprised I did not "tear" something else....

2 weeks later: Saw Shoulder Guru for this remote African village in NE Texas. He wants me to do 5 weeks for rehap, gave me cortisone shot (actually helped) and said come back in 5 weeks and I will fix it if it still hurts. He is a lifter himself and told me under no uncertain terms that he does not want me to stop lifting, but to go to cable weights and always keep my hands where I can see them to avoid undue pressure on rot cuffs

For shoulder rehab the best advice I can give is to do sessions of hanging on a pull up bar, trust me I come from the same type of injuries,
Hope you are doing better brother

Syxxspdz's picture

I had a 180 degree labrum tear

Randy70's picture

did you have surgery? I am fine after all these years. I can raise my arm without problem and I have seen guys who cannot raise above their shoulders, after surgery,.

"The surgery which is recommended today is an arthroscopic labral repair. During the shoulder surgery, a camera is placed in the shoulder, the labral tear and ligament tear is identified, moved back to its normal position and held in place with sutures."

Bill1976's picture

I had a torn bicep roght at the shoulder joint. I went to an orthopedic surgeon and he told me the same thing. But a friend of mine who is a physical therapist and bodybuilder gave me new advise when The pain got so bad that I couldn’t lift anymore. I took two months off and went back to the gym. I lifted really light and worked my way up. I started shoulder workouts with rubber bands. I feel like I made a full recovery and I am even stronger than before I was injured. But I still feel it when I do barbell shoulder presses. I stay away from barbell unless I’m going really light. Also I sleep in a way now that I don’t sleep on my shoulder. That helped A LOT!!! I’m not saying that this is the best thing for you but it is what worked best for me. Hope your shoulder gets better. I know it sucks when you want to go hard in the gym and can’t bro.

hi Bill, sorry did not see your post. Thanks bro...yes, my shoulder is fine now as is my knee I messed up doing squats after my wife said my legs looked good...hahah....I blame her.

I am back doing pretty much whatever I want (never had surgery...was told I HAD TO) and no movement restriction or pain. Amazing. Thanks man! Glad you are feeling good bro!!!

That muscle bound ortho MD I saw a few years ago (when it happened) told me in no uncertain terms, DO NOT QUIT LIFTING just lift in positions you can see your hands in front of you. He said otherwise the joint would freeze up. I just stayed light and at 67 I am seeking trim and muscular, instead of what i was doing a few years ago, bulking up.

Nothing you guys have to think about of course, but I believe, over 60, it best to be lean for longevity. But only my personal observations as a critical care RN for 40 years. BUT I may have dementia so don't take my advice. lol

randys52's picture

Follow up; Had complete tear in rotator cuff per MRI. Hurt like hell to even raise my arm for a year or more. At same time, my knee (from presses) got really screwed and so painful I had to stretch it into the passenger side to keep it straight and drive with other leg. Ice, pain meds, etc. Took off Testosterone for a year and that seemed to make it all worse. Anyway, 4 years out and I am pain free. I have no restriction on side that had tear, can lift arm and lift weights but am careful to to repeat.

I was told neither injuries (knee is bone on bone per surgery crazy MDs) would heal. Im sure they have not but since starting my testosterone again a year ago, neither cause me any problems. I treadmill a mile a day and lift without physical distress.

Just FYI? Smile

giardap's picture

Epic follow up! 4 years lol, well done!

If you learn about stabilising the upper thoracic region and externally rotating the shoulders through presses, it will save the rotator from tearing again.
Guys like Ben Pakulski and Joe Bennett have done videos on doing that properly.

Best wishes

randys52's picture

Thank you brother! Did not see your post. Will look at those videos.

zeusmarada's picture

This OP proves what we always preach: "We're in a marathon, not a sprint." Randy52, much respect! Giardap, great input as always brother. This is why eroids is awesome.

randys52's picture

Thank you brother! yes, I agree....been a critical care RN for over 40 years. Have been studying here and have many hours in studying on Eroids...been a HUGE help for me and MANY of these old timers really do have more info that many MDs on safer steroid use. I guess there is no substitute for experience....in fact I know it. Smile

zeusmarada's picture

For those of us willing to share ALL of our experiences, good, bad and ugly alike, it's the magic that makes a place like eroids so valuable. Sure, there will always be the bros that spout off bullshit. "Dude, just add another six ml's of nasty shit to your stack and you'll get yoked!" But for those of us who say, "I pinned xyzzy and my numbers came back like this," etc, by sharing data, along with the experiences, it helps us all make better informed decisions.

To any of you newbies out there, regardless of age, this stuff aint no picnic in the park. Be smart, read a lot, and use the search bar up in the top left. Go make new mistakes, not the same mistakes, let alone the same BIG mistakes that get you killed.

Randy52, I'll be in and out of eroids all winter, so no rush. Just fill me (us!) in on your shoulder on this thread when you get a chance, please. I'm certainly rooting for you, and all of our brothers & sisters here.

randys52's picture

Hey thanks man. My shoulder is perfect as far as mobility and/or pain. Can do anything I used to do. MRI showed complete tear, but image was bad due to mobile MRI picture. Confusing for me...lol. "They" say that a complete tear never hears and the pain gets so bad you HAVE to have surgery. Not me. Smile Appreciate your kindness man.

dexter2014's picture

MRI i meant to type , the cortisone shot which i call the superman shot is a false hope and its just a tep, thing any way , good luck ,

dexter2014's picture

get you a good surgeon do research on him , then get a mdi , i have had both of mine done in the last 1 1/2 , all good zoo far my rt shoulder was completely tore off the bone , 3 anchors 9 laces 12 knots later , its doing exceptionally well, my left had a 2 cm tear , (inch and half) , just done in the fall of 13 it too is doing great , mind you , u will be off work for 8 to 12 weeks , 4 to 6 weeks in a sling , and it does hurt , plus its a mental thing , your telling your arm too move and nope it just hangs there but it does get better , my two cents , oh I'm 52 by the way

randys52's picture

Cant have surgery and eat and work. lol...so we will see how this goes "unfixed"

randys52's picture

Gottcha and thanks for that. Won't do that. I did read where it weakens tissue after a while...nope, thanks Monstar

randys52's picture

Long time ago. Arm healed wo any residual pain or weakness. Go figure. Hurt like hell and had surg scheduled but at65 i knew id never be back so did not. Right knee damaged doing leg presses. Sheduled knee surg but started test again and went away. First time ive been out of pain in 3 yrs or more. Just fyi. Did NOT get repaired

randys52's picture

LOL...if I was a rich man....no, not time for just swimming yet, still lifting, though I have only been lifting for 3 years, no other time in life or I would be having joint problems....wait, I do! lol

Sounds like a great future, but you are prob right about the hips, that is what finishes a lot of elderly

What kind of band work and where would you look or for what kind of affordable HGH? That would be a huge help bro

randys52's picture

Thank you bro! I have decided I cannot get it fixed at this time due to having to work. Doc at work gave me some excercises for shoulders which seems to help some. Still hurts. Will order HGH as soon as I can. World of info man, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....and the tip on HGH is superb. Yes, the crepitus is LOUD....

Still in good shape, low body fat, muscled and YES swimming is of course the way to go. Fort or unfort, I did not lift weights until about 3 years ago and always went to "failure" on weight. Developed amazingly for a guy my age (good genetics is 90% as you know Im sure) but listened to a fool at work and tried lateral lifts....duh.

Doing ok but pull downs are dangerous? Seem to be able to do triceps, biceps (some days, most days), etc. but am stuck on what chest excercises to do as my chest is one of my best assets....even with the above it won't' "go away", but I sure did enjoy those comments by the young ladies....ah, vanity, vanity...

I am going to be 63 in Dec, and am trying to find a hospice, infusion or home health company to Administer and I MUST stay in good shape to keep working and "denying" the age thing....lol...thanks man for all that info, will refer to it often.

Any ideas on chest excercises? Doc said don't do any exercise you cannot see your hands at all times....he is a lifter also. No worries. SHIT the pain will prevent THAT...haha

You talking to and asking questions to a ghost. The member was banned.

randys52's picture

Yea, I noticed he does not speak up too much. Sorry, man. Did not know.

vhman's picture

Just pointed it out to save you some time.

randys52's picture

tx man

dudebro's picture

might wanna look into tb500 to help with the healing process after you get surgery. never used it personally but heard lots of good things.

randys52's picture

I am going to try that...that is stimulation for my own HGH, isn't it? Wonder if it works

randys52's picture

Dr wanted me back in gym, doing weights, but only those I can see my hands. Actually I can lift again (after the cortisone) and only diff is getting into postion, once there, even with machine chest presses, I can lift again. He wants me to do 5 weeks of tx, then he will fix it if I want it fixed. Hard though to take that much time off work. What do you guys think I can expect? I have been back in gym, eating again. I lost over 18 lbs in one month of no test and no excercise and almost quit eating. Geez, it goes fast.

What you guys think? I love the swimming idea, but hard around here and we don' t have an inground pool anylonger, though, by July down here its too hot to swim in anyway.

hope to be able to afford some hgh soon!

Hey Randy.
Well, it sounds like surgery is a foregone conclusion at this point and that this therapy is merely a formality in order for your insurance company to give the go ahead for surgery. I've probably seen six or seven posts of other people who had complete tears of the RC and all had surgery and were glad they did. I know it's a 8-12 month ordeal with rehab and all, but I'm not sure you'll ever get back to where you'd like to be without it. The cortisone is just a bandaid imho.

randys52's picture

t;hanks bro, yea, I know. I missed my first therapy session so I better get serious. I am prob doing more therapy in gym than they will have me do...thanks man

littlefatbuddy's picture

I agree with having the surgery. The rotator cuff is a small group of muscles and if it is a complete tear and you do not have it surgically repaired those muscles will atrophy and virtually disappear. My mother had this very probmem. I have had several surgeries on my shoulders. I recommend rest, rest, and more rest. Just like somebody said you aint 20 anymore. It will take your body that much longer to heal. I decided to push my rehab on the second cuff repair I had and tore it again in rehab. So that set me back even further. Doctors orders usually suck but it is also usually the best course. Save the compounds for when you are released and can put in full effort. Your strength will come back sooner than you think and I believe being stronger and in better shape when you have the surgery also aids in a speedy recovery. I had my last surgery in June and I am still not 100% but probably 80% of everything that will come back. This is definitely a time for training smarter and not harder.

randys52's picture

Amen, funny, the Guru Shoulder guy in our remote African village, told me Thursday that is likely a complete tear. However, he wants to do rehab for 5 weeks (to please the damn insurance company) and then will fix it if it still hurts. He is body builder himself and he said NO, do NOT get out of the gym. now or ever. he wants me to lift and to always be able to see my hands to keep excess pressure off shoulder...what you think?

Jmack1965's picture

Low deca dose will help. Also swimming is amazing for rotator cuff tears. Good luck went through is a few years ago

randys52's picture

AFRAID of deca dick! lol...heard so much about it!

randys52's picture

ty will try swimming!

TimberDog's picture

Hey Randy.
I'm 43 and suffered a partial tear of my rotator cuff early last spring. I had to modify my lifting and exercises in order to not overly stress it. It became tolerable, but regularly would become inflamed if I worked out too intensely on upper body and would especially bother me in the morning after sleep. Very frustrating to say the least.
Now this is my personal experience, so I'm not recommending anything, just saying. And I'm pretty sure I didn't have a total tear, just partial, but nevertheless it did not seem to get better even with some regular rehab. So, for my second cycle, I decided to throw in a low dosage of Deca along with Test C given what I had read about the effect of Deca on the joints with respect to enhanced collagen synthesis. After only the first week, there was a noticeable improvement in that shoulder. By the end of the third week, I was essentially pain free and graduating back into exercises that I stopped because of the pain. Now I'm in the 10th week of my cycle and I oftentimes forget that I ever had an injury to that shoulder.
So, I'm not advising anything here, just saying that Deca seems to have helped my shoulder recover (at least in the short term).
So good luck with your operation or whatever prescribed course of rehab you pursue. Just make sure to listen to your body! Oh, and almost forgot to say, just a few weeks ago I was doing some research to see if indeed any studies had been done on Deca and its ability to enhance the repair of injuries such as this in order to confirm what I experienced with myself. I came across the following thread. About halfway down you'll see a post re: Deca and the enhancement of rotator cuff tendons. fwiw. Once again, I'm not suggesting anything for your condition, just relating my own personal experience. All the best.

randys52's picture

Hey man, thanks again for spending so much time writing your exp to me...when I can afford, I will def try deca. Arm is not getting surgery anytime soon, out of work, out of insurance. THANKS man, my arm hurts in am after a good workout. Cannot do any chest excercises and I really need to. Any ideas? thanks man

randys52's picture

ty bro, I sure may have to try deca

bob350's picture

i'm 59 and I had nearly identical situation.Just trying to relate to you that torn cuff will not heal. You must find a surgeon that you feel confident with.! year after surgery and my strength is back to where it was.The only thing I can afford is testosterone self prescribed.I didn't do any training for 6 months. Its not worth the risk of re-injury.PT is mandatory any health insurance should cover that.
getting back to working out start very cautiosly. I have several shoulder excersizes I do 2X wk b4 my 2 WO that involve shoulders.they serve to warm up and to strengthen the muscles that maintain the RC muscles.
also the only bb bench I'll do are very narrow grip with elbows tucked tight and reverse grip which does not stress RC anything like conventional grip does.I can get up to 100 lb. db bench for reps.
I did put some wieght on but the depression I went through i don't beat myself up for that.
So long as your test levels are up I say your age isn't a problem.
live and learn.what else can you do. Best of luck with your surgery.
ps they could hardly believe the strength I had after they got the MRI back showing almost completly ripped. Also got compliments on my shoulder development.I love compliments.

randys52's picture

Bob, that was so helpful man, I really appreciate it. I have been told by the md that it is likely a complete tear, but that (he is a body builder) he does not wanting me out of the gym at all and gave me a cortisone shot, prescribed tx for 5 weeks and will fix then if still hurting and decreased rom. Am back to lifting about what I did before the injury (not chess presses! lol) and was doing fine until I forgot I was injured and totally lifted a 200 lbs pt by myself the other night...that hurt and it still hurts. But liveable...can raise my shoulder, but not without pain, when I get there though, I can lift. Will keep you informed man and glad to meet someone on here near my age...where you live?

randys52's picture

ha, yes, I love them too, esp at my age....dtrs friend told her yesterday, "Geez! your dad is buffed and love his tatoo!" and at 62 down here, that is unheard of. lo....doc told me yest that I sure don't look 62 adn he is right FOR HERE>..but for LA, NY, etc. I would be one of a million guys over 60 in decent shape

Without knowing all of the particulars and based on what you wrote here is what I would recommend. Make sure you get your surgery done by a physician that is known to work with athletes. Make sure they have an aggressive rehabilitation protocol to make sure you regain full range of motion ( if possible). Make sure you get enough rest. Make sure your diet is super clean. Make sure you have adequate protein in your diet as well as essential fatty acids. Learn specific exercises for your rotator cuff and do them to aid in recovery ( your physical therapist will help you with that).

I would definitely drop your test to a TRT dose of somewhere around 150 mg a week. I would supplement with DHEA and Pregnenolone. I dont know if you are aware that high levels of testosterone suppress collagen. HGH would be tremendously beneficial if you can afford it. Adding 100 mg of Deca would also be beneficial (Known to increase collagen synthesis).

I wish you a good recovery. Keep us posted of your progress.

really man, great information about stuff I know very little about. At 188 you ARE the expert, man, I I just wanted to say again that the info helped.

thank you! Appreciated info and I will sure let you know how I do...
