+ 1 Why don't we utilize PGP encryption on this site or in the markets here a bit more?

ad

I think we should look into utilizing PGP on this site and the vendors should consider it, in my opinion (and when it comes to these things, I actually might have an advanced degree in a related field, so I might know what I'm talking about, or I could be some random fuck-off on the internet trying to sabotage everyone and watch the world burn....)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public-key_cryptography

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Good_Privacy

PGP, is pretty good privacy. It has an "asymmetrical" key. What that means is that I'll establish two keys, a public and a private. You can lock messages with one, but can only unlock it with the other one.

The Public Key.
Tell everyone this. If you want to send me a message, that only I can read, use my Public Key to lock the message. Once it encrypts, it cannot be undone with that same passcode. Again, you tell everyone this. You can also use the public key to send someone a clear text message, but they can verify that it was what you intended to send. When you send someone an encrypted message, you can also sign it, so they KNOW it was from you (as long as they have your public key as well)

The Private Key.
DO NOT TELL ANYONE THIS ONE. This is YOUR secret key. This is what you use to unlock your secret messages.

There are tons of free apps that can hold your PGP keys (both your private ones, you public ones, and other people's public ones). Key are free to make and quick. You can even make them with an expiration date, which can make it more secure, and other options.

I feel the concept is pretty simple. Yes, there are weaknesses, but it starts getting to a point where you have to ask yourself how much are they going to try to come after you. I guarantee if you use encryption, you reduce your risk substantially. But with security, it's only as strong as its weakest link. If you keep your public and private keys in an easily accessible place, you sort of defeat the purpose.

Just some food for thought. It's pretty lightweight, and easy to generate keys. My advice: do not use any real identifying information if you are doing something sketch with the keys. These are good for both underground markets and the regular world (or in businesses). People use it to sign e-mails, or just simply talk securely within a company.

I'm attaching my public key I made just for here at the bottom of this message so if you guys want to send me something that only I can read, do so. We can practice if you like. It expires in a year from today. You can add it to a free PGP Keychain (for Window or Linux, I like Kleopatra). There are also Android and iOS apps that are free that do the same thing on your phone.

Anyway, I think it's valuable knowledge.

Because it's a pain in the ass and requires an extra level of technical knowledge that many people don't have or are willing to learn.
I personally hate using PGP, it has it's place but for random riff raff chat, probably not much of one.

ForeverFitBod1's picture

I'd be more concerned about the very popular source who sort of went downhill

Selling their gear on Facebook! That's a new one for me. And leads a lot of 19 and 20 year olds here. We don't need heat like that imo. It came up just from scrolling through the feeds. I took a couple screenshots and saved the person's name who's doing it who has a bodybuilder for a picture and lists himself as pharmacy.

It's funny because I honestly suspected this of him just a couple months ago. I was just a little dumbfounded pretty desperate maneuver imo

It just sort of paves the road right to our home here, which understandably can be a risk of its own but why welcome it

Not my business but I was just a little shocked. When you see the like button being hit by kids basically. We don't want kids here. But that's just nuts. Leaving us members who order from him the chance of getting caught up or popped when he goes down. Pretty desperate risk to take

.... who did this? DM me, i'm curious.

ONESICK's picture

Not really needed for this site. But when something like Pegasus exists, if people want in, they will get in.

UncleYoked's picture

it's a terrifying ability and it's not being used on this level, there's no justification for it but that doesn't mean it won't be in the future. If you take pegasus and pair it with an AI, or even just an AI all on it's own, it's capable of finding all the needles in the haystack that can point us all out.
I have no doubt in my mind that the govt is already experimenting if not fully implementing some kind of AI to identify people like me and I am not arrogant enough to believe I am out of their grasp. If the big 3 letters decides they want to take down Titans, they will and there's not a damn thing I could do to stop them. I believe I am allowed to operate because I'm not their top concern.

Yes.. A good mantra to go by.

JakeKO's picture

Same here, Bro

hogwild's picture

Yes sir, my thoughts too. Although being around here has forced this old dog to learn new tricks. Bit coin.... omg I thought my old ass would never figure it out. Oh yeah and took me forever to figure out how to post a pic wtf.. lol. Latest one was learning how to upload video to email through Google drive. All seem to easy now it was just having to learn out of necessity.

mash'D taters's picture

Is this considered social media? Were forums the first social media?

Greg's picture

Yes, forums were called bulletin boards.
One would download pictures over a 14.4 bps dial-up modem onto their 286 PC's Running windows 3.0 (with a whopping 4mb of RAM and a 256k hard drive) so they could print to their dot matrix printers in pixelated black and white.

Oh man, cave net. This brings back memories

Mac12769's picture

I can still hear the modem hook up noises in my sleep lol. Static, pings, gongs, etc…

I actually miss that noise. That and "you got mail"

Drexyl's picture

Remember when there was an attack on our power grid in the US? Hackers demanded a ransom to stop, the ransom was paid in crypto, the ransom was retrieved and the hackers caught. If they want you they’re going to get you. At some point things become paranoia, everything in life is a risk, the security it more than adequate in my opinion.

mash'D taters's picture

If they want to get you, they can, yes. But also, people are lazy and will tend to go after low hanging fruit. I'm not saying encryption makes you impervious, but it makes it more difficult, and then they start wondering if it's worth it. There should be more practices to obfuscate your presence than soley encryption. A lot of it is just common sense. Being sensible works pretty well for your own protection.

I suppose the point I was trying to make is that encryption adds a more difficult layer for someone to have to navigate. It may also bring more attention to you, because what you're doing isn't clear. Anyway, thanks for the discussion Smile

Greg's picture

...will tend to go after low hanging fruit.

Visit the rules.
Read the rules.
Follow the rules.

Just what exactly are you doing on a review site that has you so concerned?

All transactions et al should be conducted on a source's website not here. Bug the source to add this encryption or use their preferred IM app.

Besides, Quantum computing is here. The government will have access to everything within about 10 years. The upside is they will be drowning in data. No one is going to notice you. You're not a problem until you become their problem.

mash'D taters's picture

I suppose my comment about the low hanging fruit wasn't just concerning this site, but the anywhere people are doing anything. Typically enforcement will go after the stuff they see obviously wrong, at least at first. I really don't think many people are snooping here, and if they are, I really believe the time and efforts should be put forth on something that will actually yield a positive net gain for society.

There's a fucking opioid epidemic outside my house. Literally people smoking pressed fentanyl pills at the bus stops. I don't think those people deserve to be in trouble, but it's a problem that needs to be addressed. With stuff like that going on, I find it hard to believe that a government (with any sense of priorities) shouldn't be after individuals with personal quantities.

I just wanted to entertain the idea of PGP. Maybe plant a seed for someone to use it for something else later, or a source to incorporate in their website for ordering or messaging of some variety.. And yes, I've seen the quantum computers. Once they can effectively harness that, I'm with you, they'll have data overload. Then they'll go after major players, at least first, and the ones that are easiest to get.

Basically, I'm just saying, reduce your risk as much as you can, but if you're doing sketch shit, the risk will always be there. And the rules help protect a lot. I'm just saying those plus another layer adds more difficultly. Encryption could also raise an eyebrow... Like why would you need encryption for something usually thought as benign.

Good arguments. Thank you for the discussion.

Drexyl's picture

Jeez man, where do you live? Kensington ave and Somerset st? 3rd and Cambria?

JakeKO's picture

Exactly!!!! Crypto was private for the first few years. Now the government asks for you wallet info on your tax return. A lot of people think they don’t have to answer that question, but when the Round Up hits, a lot of people will be audited and fined. Fuck Crypto! I want nothing to do with it

Drexyl's picture

We old heads know. Lol

JakeKO's picture

Absolutely

FlemDaddyKush's picture

I understand the importance of having encryption, it's definitely a great thing but unfortunately a lot of people have enough problems even using crypto so introducing pgp keys will just cause mass confusion unfortunately. It's a great idea but just not practical for most of the people that are using this review website

Glad I could reach you something Smile

Because we utilize BFG cryptography instead: Best, Fucking, Good, cryptography.

Redundant, but hey, when it's that good, there's always room for an additional adjective.

Besides, this is a review site ONLY. What you, sources, and what not, want to do elsewhere is fine as far as this review site is concerned.

Argument against it: This is the clearnet not the darknet. The government has the tech to get past any encryption anyway including onion sites.

mash'D taters's picture

It would at least add an obstacle though.
