level of discipline

ad

Hey gang, I was out last night thinking about turning 40 last week and it dawned on me that im so much better in life now a days. With age i think has come a level of discipline that has allowed me to apply myself in ways i couldn't as a younger man, from my fitness to raising my kids. Iv improved in every way. And its no wise tail that us older fellas can please women better then young guys, LOL. yep iv improved there as well. But i was just wondering if you guys feel like youv gotten better with life as youv gotten older or if ya feel like you just don't have the spark for life like you used to. I think to my self wow, how would life be now if i had this drive back then.

it's really true brother, with that added level of discipline also comes another level of confidence I reremember being 20 something, not fully knowing where and what life's direction will take you. way to many unanswered questions in that stage of life. yeah, with the experience and wisdom brings a few aches and pains not known at 20 however, I'll gladly accept those to be where I am in life now. nice read brother brings a guy to reflect on himself.

What a good read........ really enjoyed reading this thread, the mature and intelligent conversation is cutting edge for a usual "off topic" post........... you guys and gals just re-invented my faith in human nature :))

A good friend of mine (7Gothic) once stated.. GETTIN OLD AINT FOR PUSSIES!

How true is that statement? .......... unbelievably true imo ;/

I can get on board with this topic, I'm only 30 but if i'm not in the gym or at my regular job, i'm in school or working construction side jobs. I box as a hoby, can build a house or fix anything in it and am one class away from graduating culinary school. Also have a kickass chef job lined up already starting this month at an upscale Hawaiian fusion restaurant(whatever the f**k that is). When I was 18-21 my only goal was to get laid and get drunk or stoned and watch tv or play a video game. With experience comes wisdom, we sewed our wild oats and now life is beckoning and as men we are ready to grab it by the horns! I accomplish something special every week, I spent years in my youth not accomplishing jack bud. Nobodies born with discipline we earned it.

Turned 40 a few months ago myself, my friend with benefits is 26! Things could be worse lol.

And yeah we get better with age, experience is something you can't buy. I said to her last week all your boyfriends from here on are going to be big disappointments after me...lmfao. It's true tho.

I'm so Glad where I am today at 31. I actually look forward to growing older and wiser. As I age I see my mistakes n faults n you learn to accept them and see it makes who you are today. I love who I am and as time passes it just seems to get better. I have an amazing husband n great children I love so much. I enjoy the new fitness life that came my way almost 4 years ago as well. I feel healthy and proud of my accomplishments. Every day I try to work harder and be the best I am for me and everyone who surrounds me. Life can be wonderful if you let it be.

My dad always said that HE would get smarter the older I got... he was right.

rolltide3's picture

I've said this many times as a young man I thought I knew everything. I was hard headed stubborn and little did I know how foolish I was in life. I definitely handle life situations better now and have gotten better myself. I'm glad I waited to have kids till I had the chance to learn this as it's definitely helped with my son. Discipline is a lot easier now in this part of my life and it has a lot to do with having a stable family that needs me and depends on me(really grounded me). It scary as I look back and think what I could of doin if I just realized how stupid I was in my youth. I see this daily in my real life and everyday in here with kids and makes me wanna knock some sense into them but I guess that's part of growing up

IrishMack's picture

Indeed, for all the stupid shit I did as a kid its amazing I'm alive today or not doing life without parole. Life lessons are learned through time and experience and kudos to you for waiting to have kids, plus the been there done that gets them pissed when they try to pull the wool over your eyes lol. I have a daughter so it was my curse for the shit I did and she is reaching that age where boys are becoming her main concern and I do not have enough body bags or places to bury them or even alibi's.

injected's picture

I have four daughters. The oldest one is 13. She won't admit it but she's just now started gaining an interest in boys. God knows I don't know how I'm going to handle the next few years. They all take after their mother and are going to be knockouts and a teenage boy only has one thing on their mind. I know I did at that age. I just pray I don't end up in prison.

Catalyst's picture

I'm not looking forward to when my daughter starts bringing boyfriends home. The wife will have to chain me up outside in the garden......

Pale's picture

I have it very similar with my 17 year old. I think it is natural that they want to challenge the old dominant buck for supremacy. Unfortunately for them it doesn't often work that way. lol. But that is why they need to get out on their own sooner rather than later. They can be the alpha male of their own domain. I also have a 15 year old daughter, so it is akin to a one, two punch for me.

cdyrdes's picture

Life is just like everything else, its all about experience. Those experiences good or bad is what shapes you into who you choose to be. Discipline for me anyway has gotten easier with age/experience gained.

MONK's picture

That's why it's so important to do our best to try an install those values and hard lessons learned in our children.

+1,000,000 on that one, We see the effects here of what happens when values and lessons are thrown out the window. I grew up in an era where you got your ass kicked when you fucked up not this whole new "no child left behind" and "positive reinforcement." Our positive reinforcement was to do the right thing or else not be able to walk for a week. I still turned out alright regardless of what the "experts" say. I learned respect and judgement and what the consequences were for not staying true.

MONK's picture

Growing up I was also ruled by an iron fist. It taught me to survive in hard situations, made streetwise, and read people by the whites of their eyes. However it also made me extremely cynical and have very little empathy towards almost anyone or anything.

So now I have a little angel in my life I wouldn't dream of installing such old school ways. I'll show her discipline my own way, I'll teach her right and wrong without the dictatorship, and most importantly I'll give her all the love in the world.

I treat my daughter different of course as well. And as long as you teach her right and show her love she won;t ever bring home a guy you want to bury in your backyard. I show her how a woman should be treated when she is with my new wife so she can look for those qualities in a man but at the same time I do show my strong side. I hope to God she never brings home a Mini me. The on thing I teach my daughter the most is not to depend on a man for anything as I saw what happens 1sthand growing up and by my girl "friends"

Pale's picture

Is that not every fathers nightmare, lol. At the age she is right now I cannot see liking ANY potential boyfriends she has, including the one she does have, lol. He seems like an alright kid, but that is my daughter and I full eel remember my 16 year old selfs hormones. Ugg...This sucks.

IrishMack's picture

Shes got 2 years to hit 16 so that gives me enough time to dig a lot of holes lol. Just remember how rebellious you were as a kid so if you say you hate him; she will like him even more. On a side note, lets bury the hatchet, I got nothing against you. We both feel strongly and sometimes bump heads but lets let that be the past and move on, Hows that sound?

Pale's picture

Fair enough. And I agree I have to temper my hatred for the little jerk-offs,lol. It is funny, my high school girlfriend, her dad and I would go fly fishing all the time. Well one of the first trips I swear he had me cross in a really treacherous spot on the river. The water was moving quick and it was deep enough that I didn't have an inch to spare at the top of my waders. The current was also pushing me downstream. It was then I realized, he was at very least testing me, or at worst trying to kill me. This was back before we all had neoprene waders, they were canvas. If they fill up, you are in big trouble. I made it across but it was a very close shave. lol.

Moral of the story, is I need to be creative in dealing with these kids, lol

IrishMack's picture

LOL he was trying to kill you in a suttle "it was an accident" way. I have to remember I was a kid once too and stop being a hypocrite, one of the things my wife has been slamming into my skull recently.

Pale's picture

It is almost impossible not to be hypocritical when dealing with our kids. I do try to explain why tho,lol

MONK's picture

Jesus there's a thought lol, she brings home a fucker with the same flow and intentions as I had in my teens, stepping through my front door may just be the biggest mistake the young Man makes in his entire career lol Smile Smile

Unfortunately Mac the old school ways are goin I agree whole heartedly with u. Remember when two grown men had a dispute they would go outside smack each other around then come back in and buy each other drinks. This new way of thinking has turned are society so soft and kids bullying at school my god u think now they killed some one but that's the times when your bullied at school that u learn to stand up for yourself and your values. I mean these kids nowadays are so soft that they can't handle someone mocking them on the internet Smh. Are society needs to wake the f up. I'm teaching my son if someone bullys him knock his block off I want him to be a man not this go tell a teacher.I want my son to stand up for himself and what he believes in

IrishMack's picture

I was just commenting on this the other day. When I got bullied in school when I was a kid I came home with a black eye and my stepdad asked if I won the fight. When I told him no and the guy was a big bully my stepdad told me if I did not go to school the next day and fight him back I was to not come home. Fair to say it was my 1st fight and I surprised myself that I beat his ass, I think it was because I was scared I would be on the streets at 14 years old and it was all I could think of during the fight. I'm punching this kid and saying out loud "I'm not living on the streets!" The principal asked my Mom what that meant as they suspended me for fighting. I look back and laugh as the parents nowadays cuddle their child and then give them doughnuts and cookies as reinforcement for being a fkn pussy.

rolltide3's picture

Lol that's great had a bully when I was a kid I was ten or so and the kid was older properly 13 or 14 well that's the worse ass whooping I every got but I didn't back down. He closed my one eye completely and the second almost swole shut. Got home and my ole man told me I had to try him again. We had numerous fights and when I turned 16 I finally got my revenge and to this day after I whooped his ass were good friends and he's never messed with me since lol

IrishMack's picture

This what is missing these days. If we had more parents like that kids would be using their fists and not guns to solve problems.

rolltide3's picture

Me and the wife fight all the time bout this exact subject and our son. She just now in her mid 20s and me my mid 30s and I grew up with that attitude and she grew up more like the kids today. If we keep goin in a few generations well let's just say I'm glad I won't be around to see what our society is turning into. I grew up in a small community when I was a kid we left our doors unlocked now u can't trust anyone. Mac I'm afraid people like u and me won't have a place in the world with our crazy ideas and thoughts of men been men lol.

cdyrdes's picture

I agree!

MONK's picture

I'm with you on that one also. My little girl isn't even 3 yet and as crazy as it may sound I can already see the exact same wild streak in me which I let rule the biggest part of my life. I'll do all I can to show here the right path, I'll never force here into any decision only educate her in making those choices for herself.
