Atheism
ad
I want to draw out a couple of atheists on here. If you are an atheist, what is your definition of atheism? I know the Webster definition but I want other perspectives.

Knowledge is power! Are you Golden Dawn or Rose Le Croix or...?
My avatar is golden dawn
Yes it is , I hadn't opened you profile so I couldn't see what the actual pic was.Good for you,I lean toward gnostic principals as well. The funny thing is most have no idea what you talking about when you say gnostic.
Have you ever researched Giordano Bruno? If not check him out, he revolutionized hermeticism in the renaissance and was a martyr for science.
600 years before jesus, Jeremiah prophesied the fate of religion. Jesus put it in motion. (ever wonder why there are so many "non practicing" catholics?)
Basically it states that we will know god gnostically. Religion (teaching their neighbor) will no longer exist.
Very good quote:I was raised in the fundamental but always gravitated to the spiritual. The gospel of Thomas says much the same thing,of course the standard Christian has no idea that such a book exist.Enlightening post!!!!Thanks Greg!
that's because they have figured out how to ask questions yet and accept what they are fed
haven't?
And there ain't a damn thing wrong with that.
Thank you my dear brother Pale! Wishing you peace, love and joy always my friend! :))
I pray to the almighty twig commander.
Amen.
But you're the twig commander!
You are calling yourself God arent you?!
lol
Amen, brother. All must follow the almighty twig commander!
Not I, we in the older generation follow the "Giant Redwood commander". KMC is been a faithful follower then it was just "redwood commander".
Twigs are for aussies and kids.
no homo... like my shoes?
The taste is earthy and gritty. In the winter, I bet both twig and redwood dream of sunny summer days.
Probably a good thing this one slipped by me. I can get a little… overzealous when it comes to this.
The meaning differs from individual to individual. Myself, I draw a distinct line between atheism and agnosticism. I am not wishy washy. My atheism doesn't simply mean that I "don't know what's out there." It doesn't even necessarily mean I reject the existence of a deity or multiple deities. What it does mean, is that whether or not a deity exists, either way, I am immutably indifferent towards it. I put no faith in it and I will not submit to it. If it turned out to exist, I would indubitably defy it. "No gods, no masters." That sums up my atheism better than it ever summed up any political beliefs. Do I believe in a god? Absolutely not until it can be proven. That's why I refer to a deity as "it," because I don't anthropomorphize things that don't exist.
This is the quest embedded within all sentience. This statement rings a sound on deidism a bit.
The true emancipation of man.Live life accept death and own it with no fear. Its not me ,but I have much respect brother!
I work in a science field and started to really follow the belief that science, mathematics, and evolution could explain the origins of life so I guess I was essentially an atheist. However, Someone once told me that when you are on your death bed you need something to give you hope and that is the belief in a higher power, whatever that may be. Well, I was recently given a health diagnosis which put a very short time limit on my life. I was literally scared to death. What did I turn to--praying to god again. Turns out that the doctor made a mistake and I dont have a terminal illness. Probably some weird coincidence, but this guy will never not believe again
That is interesting, and I'm glad you're ok. But, what whoever told you that doesn't understand is that not everyone shares in this culture's bizzare fascination with prolonging life. Once I'm dead, I'm dead. It doesn't mattter if it's tonight or 60 years from now.
Afterlife? Fuck afterlife. If I had to live forever I'd kill myself.
Beautiful story brother, why is it no matter how are mindset is during our desperate hour we call on a higher power?
Not one atheistic response, I feel most of the population are agnostic
Am an aetheist in the broad sense
Would define it as the rejection of man-made beliefs relating to god's and their likes as well as their man-made guides/books
Looking forward to the day(s) where physics helps us understand better some of the many things we dont know about fully, and there is a lot of that.
I'm also agnostic. One thing I try to believe in, are people.Every day when I watching the news, all these acts of terrorism, all these young people killing themselves by accident, by stupidity, all these political provocations...Not so long ago, I've been read about Jacque Fresco's works, future vision...Make me think about a lot of stuff happened nowadays. What's why I'm trying to be better every day and help everyone who surrounds me. Planet population, for now, is over 7 billion people and we have as many opinions.
ClassyChassisWhat blows my mind is how consciousness and everything that it's conscious of could exist. But what blows my mind even more is how could nothing exist? Where would it not exist and who would not be there to not know it? There would have never been anything, which is impossible. It doesn't even make sense.
The world and everything in it is an unfathomable mystery and human beings reek of that mystery. Infinity cannot be encompassed by the mind of man because man is not the measure of it. I'm perpetually astounded to find myself alive in this fantastic world.
consciousness...could exist - humans don't actually know what consciousness is, yet at least. Scientists can only theorise at the moment. In fact, recent Aussie research shows that reality itself as we think about it everyday doe not exist!
how could nothing exist
The latest quantum physics research hypothesises indirectly that nothing does not exist. They have already proven that particles pop in and out of so called nothingness spontaneously, meaning that empty space has substance we do not yet understand and that what we currently consider nothing to be is in fact not nothing as wee have understood
Hate to break it to you but they haven't proven it.That's why it's a hypothesis.Proven things are called laws.I do however see you point, that they think they have some evidence that even anti matter has matter at times, and that nothing is something.I am not a physicist, and most of it is beyond me concept, but the concept of thunderbolts cosmology is interesting. Its basic concept is that GOD is a magnetic field that holds all the cosmic caos together.
I think If you re-read my post, you should see I split between proof of one thing the separate yet indirectly related hypothesis that supports a separate thing.
See, proof is evidence of something, whereas laws are explanations or summaries that are built from evidence! Proof leads to the ability to predict future experiments, whereas laws can cover lots of subjects in a really broad or narrow sense. Proven things are not laws but results of experiments or of events. These proven things lead to the ability to formulate or state a law.
I am an armchair science guy at best. I completely squandered my time studying physics, so to say my understanding of these things is limited would be an understatement. But hey man, the brightest minds on earth still do not understand and cannot tell us what light is, let alone whether we have a mind or a soul, what it might be, or where it resides, either now now or in the future! As for thunderbolts... well thunderbolts, comets, aliens... the list is endless isn't it?! All man-made though and with zero evidence!
I agree man. After I responded I saw that you were actually making two different points.I was only pointing out that a hypothesis is only conjecture. An idea of a starting point or a place to start scientific method. Then you get theory and when tested over and over can become law. That is at least how biology works, which is the science in which I obtained a degree.Too many times we have these guys claiming to be scientist on TV talking shit about things they couldn't prove to save their lives. It gets under my skin a little. That being said I'm sorry if i came across as a dick,I actually respect your input and read most of you post.
No no, you didnt at all man, don't be silly
If you'd called me a godless bastid though... id have been sad LOL
;-P
Something does not exist without nothing. Something, and nothing, are two sides of the same coin. Wave v. particle, it's how you are looking at it.
What you refer to only is relevant to matter. The "beingness" exists and dosn't exist at the same time. It is beyond the physical world. I AM thought, let there be light... energy, big bang, matter, space-time. all inside the nothing that created it.
Something does not exist without nothing I agree with that, but wonder if they might be one side of the same coin. Something similar to the relatively new hologram theory.
You are absolutely right, at least to an extent about matter. Matter, antimatter, dark matter and so on, however to suggest there is in fact a vehicle for these things is a jump. However if dark matter makes 80% of the universe and is not observable, then we do not even know if it is matter at all.
We have had nothing, and now understand nothing either contains something, or creates something, or perhaps nothing (as we define it) just doesn't exist and is in itself something, but there is no certainty of any of this. Nothing may be something in itself/part of something else as you speculate or it may be all things or simply not visible/perceivable to humans (the the analogy of the ant on the TV screen)!
What you refer to only is relevant to matter. if we dont know what 80% of matter is, we dont really know what matter is at all... Essentially what I am referring to might (it's all speculation really) refer to everything, or nothing (no pun intended!) - we simply do not know, but as evidence gathers, it proves beingness may have grown from random cosmic events rather than design or the hand of God, again we dont know, but its likely life itself rode to planet(s) via asteroids, so it all seems a little convoluted to actually think beingness is something special!
If we can ever truly define nothing, we will be closer to the answers some seek, but the philosophical questions of; yeah but what existed before that or yeah but who made that... are simply the utterances of humans (to date/that we know of, at least)
The body I have is where the body I am resides.
Watch that link I posted up there it's 2 minutes long and I think you'll enjoy it
Causality adequacy principle, Rene Descartes
Evidence of a god, or an attempt to explain why mankind yearns for a god?!
Ferral people don seem to have such issues!
Ferral people don't have access to certain parts of their brain which includes logic and only use mid brain functioning systems including the corpus collosum which induce emotional functions. So ferral people in turn are devolved forms of consciousness. I think we are the only creature to construct a god form and ironically we are the most evolved species.
Well, it is only in recent years they have begun to learn more about this. It's not that they dont have access to the brain, the brain develops in a different way and certain cells in certain areas of the brain may not develop at all. In fact they have shown that genes responsible for things like intelligence might not even come into existance if a child remains un-nurtured in the first few years of life.
In that sense, it is all about the quality of the relationship between the caregiver and the child, or the lack thereof. Ferral people are not devolved, they are underdeveloped. Considering that the brightest researchers on earth who research consciousness; do not even know what consciousness is or where it resides... we cannot call people consciousness.
I agree 100% on how ironic it all is. If we look at the evidence that leads to the formation of religeon (not god but man-made religeon), it is purely a human construct with origins that go back to primal human relationships. Emotional interaction leads to brain development, intelligence and the need to define god. Its like a bad dream!
This is true but even ferral people, who have never been taught about god, develop constructs of religion and pray, chant, talk to them selves and look to the sky for guidance in time of trial and strife.I personally believe we are connected to a God in some way but I detest organized religion.I tend to think of it as a way of control and thievery.
Consciousness however is a whole other thing in my opinion. It is the awareness of self,so in my opinion even a computer can have that.Truth be told one could really look at us like that, the brain a computer and the body the power plant. Not very romantic but makes sense, and kind of crushes the whole Einstein opinion about energy never being created or destroyed,so there must be something next.
this is a very challenging thread.
Well, feral people, more specifically children cannot talk have no abstract understanding of god/religion(s) - This is clearly documented - and do not develop such constructs. That is just simply not true! They dont look to the sky in time of strife. Time of strife for feral people is about immediate needs, food and water. You might be thinking of early man or cavemen maybe? These people had human connection, bonds, and means of communication. Ironically, without human nurturing, the idea of god does not exist for humans.
Re: consciousness, yes and there have been countless of academic theories and studies based on that, it really is interesting though isnt it. Trying to wrap your head around around such complicated theories!! Some day!
I may have mistook feral as not civilized,or learned.
I used a poor choice of words but you definitely got the gist and actually reiterated what I was trying to say. Have you read any of Carl Jungs works?
I have read some very limited amount of his work when studying a biz degree, particularly when we were looking at personalities and Myers Briggs tests etc. I have seen him referenced in some physics discussions for an alternate viewpoint on causality which I really liked but the one thing that stuck me most was that he was WAY more connected to both how the mind works and reality itself than Freud was! Just my opinion..
I haven't had the chance to read much, certainly not on religion etc. Is there anything you would recommend?
If someone was stranded in the dessert with no food and no water should they pray for god or should they pray for water??
Whether rain or God where are you casting these prayers? Where are they received or what is receiving them ?
Lol you got it.
There is no answer
Maybe they should pray to "god" for water...
Or perhaps they should pray for help and let "god" decide if that'll be a peaceful, fearless, and quiet death, rescue, or a sudden downpour.
Lol.
I was just writing that as a bit of a joke as its an absolute mind boggling thing to think about, i agree there must be something.
If a bird shits on me in the park after dark, will i die?
Why is the sky blue?
Lol
AnonYou can drink your own urine twice before its dangerous.
No water equals no urine which equals death.
