Gains over 40
Hey fellas and ladies,
Just wanted to get some thoughts about if you feel gaining muscle , getting bigger, begins to stop at any point especially in people over 40 as myself. I guess I am really beginning to question if It is worth it to my health if I should go into a full on bulk mode as I did last year or just continue a " lean bulk" with a small rise in calories and reducing cardio a bit. Last year I bulked up to high 230ish, but it was at a cost. My blood work wasn't all that great, my blood pressure was running high normal, I looked bloated, and at almost 42 years old I'm not sure if putting that much stress on my body is worth it if in fact the gains we get as we age are trivial regardless of how much we bulk..Also, losing 30-40 lbs to get lean again sucks .. Lol ..I kind of like where I'm at now , but would love to continue to grow if it is possible at my age and older..
So what do you guys think is bulking hard over 40 or older worth it as far as gaining muscle goes at this age? I know 40 isn't old btw so I would like to hear from those even older then that too:)
Thanks for reading.

Im 49 and , I feel like I gain , and if Im not , gaining I know im maintaing the monstr :)) thats all that .matters to me ,, a matter a fact last cycle I went to 215 over 315 lb bench , a d . I never topped 200 , zo tell me are gains possible pege
I'm not sure I understand the problem/question. Personally I think it's imperative to try and (re)gain and keep muscle mass as you get older.
I gained a lot of muscle naturally at 48 years of age. Just changed my diet and started lifting.
My natural test levels went up after putting on the muscle. As did my metabolism. I no longer have to "diet" like I once had to.
LOL...... funny post this..
Your just a freak bro lol. Hell I'm in my 30s and I don't bounce like I did ten years ago
Maybe!.... just MAYBE!!
Good lovooooin, milk and vitamins bro....... thats the magic lol
That and your desiccated liver pills. Yum.
Add some Brewers yeast and thick black malt and you just created longevity brother..... then for snacks get some roasted lambs hearts stuffed with cous cous and mixed veg and you are then on the first step to immortality :))
Secrets of the immortals! (actually sound delicious!).
it has to be brother to keep a massive eating plan going ............ boring, tasteless food is usually the reason most folks fail in this game.. ... keep it adventurous, tasty and exciting and that 5/6/7000 cal target we have becomes easy and not a boring daily chore.
When i see listed diet plans on here i think to myself "how boring is that day in day out! i would last 3 maybe 4 days eating the shit i see listed on here then throw it in the bin"... people believe they must eat the same shit every single day ??? i cant believe the ignorance shown, and i know for a fact it is nigh impossible to stick to that type of regime unless in deep show prep (which is uncommon here).
Ooops!!... i forgot again this is NOT a Bodybuilding site....... sorry guys i was talking out of context for the masses AGAIN! (slapped wrists) lol........ eat what you want guys and steer clear of my diets they will have you cruising above 250lbs in the blink of an eye !... i realise most of you dont want that size so disregard my words.... peace
I am friends with an upcoming pro in my state. His take on the diet is, if you dont eat the same thing everyday, youll never know what is working and when to change what.
Myself, i know i just dont have it in me to be that dedicated to get that type of physique. It consumes his life. It is his life. Its just something im not willing to do.
As far as my diet, i eat clean and now stay lean year round. Another mod here has convinced me that its much easier than to do the rollercoaster of bulking and cutting. Now its decent physique to cutting to get ripped during summer. Doesnt take but a small change in diet and a bit of extra cardio and its done.
im still getting good gains without the 30-40 pound swing in weight. Seems to be what works better for me at 39 yo.
See your holding out on me I know bout your creatine use and your high protein bread I'm learning all your tricks lol
I'm 40 and have noticed over last couple years it's getting harder to bulk and the sides come easier and more often than they used too. I could do huge stupid stacks in the past and never had trouble with estrogen and blood pressure like I do now. I can still bulk great just with a lot more consequence and more work. I've pretty much decided to stay with a muscled fitness physique rather than pursue a body builder physique again
I'm 48 and I'm the strongest and fittest I've ever been. i refuse to grow old!
im 42 and just like wine the older im getting the better I feel, I just wont bulk because it does not come off as easy as it did in my 20s and 30s. keep making us old farts look good!
I am bigger than ever and will be 41 really soon. Look at Viking! We can still do it!
Edit; i read a little further and no, I don't specifically try to bulk.
Thanks for all the comments!!! Sounds lean gains is the way to go.. I was leaning that way anyway because I just didn't like how I felt all heavy and shit!! And I really don't want hypertension for 6 months a year lol
I've never been a big fan of bulking to begin with and now that I am 45 even less so. Plays havoc with my joints and I'm always afraid I won't be able to lose the weight or go through the pain of dieting and cardio. Plus, I'd hate to lose my abs. Lol. Have I sacrificed some growth over the years? Probably. But I'm not a bodybuilder and have to wear suits everyday to work so it really doesn't bother me.
Im not 40, or anywhere close to it but I think you should just do a lean bulk nothing crazy. Its not worth the stress on the body. Youre a big guy already man. I think these all out bulks are great for guys like myself but i really think this will be my last. Once i have a base of size that i am happy with my focus will shift towards quality. Im not saying I'm not gonna bulk. But ill gain extremely clean pounds over the winter instead of blowing up 35lbs and then losing a huge amount when cutting. These huge weight fluctuations aren't the most healthy thing to be doing. 40s not old, but its no different when your 30 or 25, the extreme gains and losses in weight isn't that healthy. At the peak of my bulk last spring Bp was kinda high, i was out of breath and sweating for no reason. And I'm only 25.
I still think you can grow at a great pace without doing a heavy bulk. You just have to be alot more strict on your diet and keep some cardio in your routine. Im almost excited to get to the point your at man lol. I hate how I look when I'm bulking I get the worst moon face from the huge increase in calories and carbs. And by lean bulking you can almost do it year round instead of bulking for 6 months and cutting for 6 months. I think you would acctaully gain more in a year by doing it that way.
Rub it in!!!
Frank Zane said bulking was a year wasted, he said after he'd leaned down he was at the same point as he was before he'd bulked up.
It's probably more an individual thing, most BB's tho bulk off season to cut up for summer.
I've just turned 40 and I've considered an all out bulker but I keep making lean steady gains so maybe in the future I might try a bulk. But for now I'll stay doing what I'm doing.
RustyhookerAt 40 i hit 205 lean on just 450/week sust..
43 and went with complex stack to hit 201. It's much slower! Used to drop fat at 40 with half hour treadmill and 4Weeks. Now it's mandatory cardio if i wanna keep the mass. Slow and go big bro! Just enough cals that fats manageable. Adding 10lbs in one year and maintaining is excellent. Not like the younger days.
Sounds like a plan rusty!!
Honestly I can't attest that the rapid fluctuations of weight gain and loss is what is horrible for our bodys. I would continue with the lean bulk and keep blood levels stable as possible. It's alot at any age to carry around that much weight, our body's aren't built to carry that much muscle. You look freaking awesome uncle Oldermuscle, honestly probably better that a majority of people your age. Plus what would work say if you gained a huge amount of muscle? Stick around and continue it as healthy as possible.
Thanks brother , it's hard to fight the urge to want to be all big and thick lol.. But that extra non-lean weight was fucking me all up.. I did gain some nice muscle but I don't think hypertension and bad lipids for 4 months is worth it .. I think I'm gonna keep it clean and just see where it takes me ..
I'm only in my 30s and I think my gains and my ability to recovery has slowed down. Imo u need to step back and weight the risk and rewards. Can u still gain of course but if u are having so many issues health wise. Is the risk worth the reward
Exactly what I've been thinking
what was your body fat % at 230lbs? My uncle is 67 started HRT in his 40's he looks phenomenal I should post a pic. he monitors his bloods very close
In not sure it was up there tho lol.. I'm guessing I'm about 12 or so now tho.. I just use the mirror since I don't compete.. I have some recent pics up if you want let me know where you think I at. I was down to like 190's now I'm back up to 200 on the dot with a little bump in cals.
