I know its kinda stupid question but I will never learn asking smart questions lol okay is it true that if you
are a fighter if you have a bigger forearm you can hit harder or a better
Chance to devolp knockout power or really doesnt matter cause i read and herd different views is this True or false

Nitti's picture

This is a better demonstration of raw power. You can almost feel the thud through the screen. Sick!

Fuck ya bro he uses his hips. That's where the power comes from on his hooks.

Watch his lats when he lands those heavy hits; he puts his back into it.

Nitti's picture

This is a classic example of the Freaks I described. When these two fought it was one of the most anticipated fights in years. These two both have Tyson like knock out power. Especially Gennady. If you have the time , watch this fight and pay extra attention to the ferocity in Stevens punches and the effortless pawing type punches that Gennady throws which eventually Knocks Stevens out.

Pretty good fight, got me all pumped today now lol. When Garcia saw an opening he banged it out, on those hits notice him using his back and lats and his legs for balance? Here's another example of underestimation, the classic Mancini vs Kim fight. I actually went to that fight with my dad before he passed away; he was a big fan of the little guy so we went to most of his fights. 21 years old and a true fighter. yes I nut hug mancini no homo but pretty fkn close HAHA.

Triceps; legs and shoulders/lats. When I did Golden gloves as a youngster my trainer made me work out my triceps with massive weight and shoulders too. I can;t remember how many bent over barbell rows I had to and how many jumping jacks with weights in my hands. We also practiced how to stand so you can use your legs, triceps, and shoulders to make one fell swoop. One thing I always remembered though and still use to this day.....It's not how hard that 1st punch is, its how many times you can deliver it before they can block it. Take a look at ray boom boom mancini's fights before he killed a man in the ring and stopped boxing. That fucker had some serious speed and backed it up with some powerful punches. All that and he was a small ass dude. grab a cable, stack about 90 pounds on it, get into a fighting stance, and then throw a punch with the hand on the cable. You will either hurt your tricep or fall over because your legs are not positioned correctly. Forearms help soften the blows that come at your face and body.

sic26's picture

You mean if u were to block with your forearms what bout a good forearm choke lol. I could try that punch technique with my Bowflex right or would it still work if I put 15lbs weights in my hand and throw like hooks jabs etc would that do anything

IrishMack's picture

remember, its not to work out your arms but for you to get balance. I have a speedbag in my house and I normally strap on 10-20 pounds on my arms and see how fast I can hit it. .point is some people can take a punch, but if you can keep throwing AND landing multiple shots you can win faster and less chance of getting yourself hurt hehe. When I stopped boxing I was 40 wins 7 losses 1 knockout, that dude broke my nose in 4 shots and put me on the floor. Its what happens when you get cocky and underestimate your opponent. Be safe.

Nitti's picture

Triceps are used big time in the hook along with the rear delt. So I guess training those muscles will help but it isn't what makes a punch powerful. I am a southpaw and throw a lot of right hooks. My hook gets it's power from the rotation of my hips. My right tricep is noticeably bigger than my left. So that is a good testiment to your point.

IrishMack's picture

im a leftie in everything but sports, i bowl, golf, and bat rightie, i write and throw left. My strong arm is left of course, I usually lead with the right and finish with the left. If they are still standing then all bets are off and its streetfighting time lol.

Nitti's picture

all bets are off and it's street fighting time

In the amateurs we had head gear on so we adapted to the extra padding on the chin with things like the hookbow. A hook with a follow through elbow lol. Everyone had used dirty tactics sometimes.

IrishMack's picture

Fucker lol I only used the "elbow" when I got mad that my punches were being blocked then the uppercut to the chin up close then get yelled at by my trainer that this was boxing not mugging. The head gear we had back in the 80-90's were a little lighter then they are now and every punch that landed was not cushioned by much.

Not at all.

Nitti's picture

Not or false rather. I guess I should explain huh.

Nitti's picture

Punching power can be an acquired skill. It can be taught to a certain degree. Because it comes from the legs! That's right, IT COMES FROM THE LEGS! And the rotation and movement of the hips. Imagine you have a ball of energy in your back foot (foot of the power hand), you will learn (if you have training) to thrust that energy/power from the foot, up the leg into the hips and running up the back/shoulder into the arm to the fist. I guess the best way is to imagine a baseball player. Picture a ball of energy starting at his foot when hes about to swing the bat. As the ball comes in, he starts his motion and in one fluid motion he transfers that ball of energy all the way up his body to the bat. Same can be imagined about a power punch. Your power will come from your lower body, but, the shoulder and arm act as a sling shot. Its like the legs are pulling back the sling and your shoulder/arm are propelling it forward. With that said, big shoulders and big arms produce power in themselves. But only to a certain degree. If the motion is jerky or just not fluid, the punch is not going to be hard as it can be. If you have big forearms, you will have heavy punches. But not necessarily power. Another thing to think about is speed. Speed is power. So if you think that you'll get all big and bodybuilder like and that means you will punch harder than the skinny guy, think again. You will damn sure take a punch better than him, but you'll need it because that fast trained slender fella, is gonna put that chin to the test. Speed accompanied by agility or athleticism in the overall movement are going to produce the biggest punch. The only time it will be out done is when you have those gifted fighters. Those guys that are born with it. They aren't big, they just have it. It can't be explained to my knowledge. But look at Gennady Golovkin, Adonis Stevenson, or Sergie Kovalev. These guys are just gifted with raw power. These guys are freaks of nature. They throw jabs that knock guys out. A jab is designed to set up big punches by interfering with the rhythm and line of sight of the opponent. There is no movement in the lower body other than a step fwd. So in the case of the freaks, the forearm may have some impact

Nitti's picture

So freaks aside, you can learn to develop punching power and if you plan on fighting, you had better have some training. To answer the PM question you sent, Street fighters are not the best ppl to take advice from. There is no such thing as tough. There Is trained and untrained! I stole that from Denzel. I wouldn't be paying them too much mind bro. They talk a lot.

sic26's picture

yo nitti I just thought about my uncle does talk alot one time had to take piss he knew it he was like nephew let me tell you this story when i fought blah blah told him peace lol gotta go UNC he had the sad face maybe he needs to talk i know I went off topic I do that.

Strong forearms can help but mainly Shoulders, Hips, & Feet are the main power generators to help maximize the torque of the body to increase force and penetration of the punch. Your line of initiation is your line of retraction avoid dropping your elbow or locking. tighten your fist on impact rather then full clench throughout the blow. Just some basic tips where you can lose power since all punches are different. There are a lot of great ways to strengthen a punch but sometimes it's also defined by the style of fighting.

sic26's picture

Okay so follow I guess powerlifting way guess an a little bodybuilding style also if that makes any sense to you then someone also told me to throw 15lbs and 20lbs to stay fast n loose is this true i have a new training regimen already but i guess as I go along still tryna make sure I'm still learning making sure I do things right every time I get some great advice I write it down study then execute in training lol dont really have criticism on my training unless my body tells me now i can come on here also an get some help
