How Long for Knee Fluid to Drain?

ad

I tried switching up my deadlift routine from a simple 5x5 to pulling doubles until I exceeded the previous week's total volume for the exercise. Since grip strength was the problem and why I switched routines, I lowered the weight by 50 pounds so I had to do 16 sets of 2 to beat the previous week. This is where I think I messed up.

No problems during the workout but walking to my car afterwords I felt a bubble in my knee similar to what it feels like after a cortisone injection since I'm pretty familiar to the feeling. Not too happy about skipping leg days and it's been almost a week. Usually only have pain squatting down to around parallel and after working out even though I switched to all seated exercises for the upper body. No swelling or bruising either but I can feel that internal bubble. I've had 2 surgeries on this knee with both not serious (debriments of scar tissue against the meniscus and removal of bone/cartilage fragments from getting hit by a car) and no major tears.

Question is how long should I expect to need to rest? So far no improvement and I don't want to push it so I'm not doing any light PT like training but when do you guys think it's safe to start moving it around? Thanks for the advice.

See a physical therapist or Doc to seek real answers. There are no simple ones. Each case is different.

I hurt my knee at work by coming down on a screw and periodically it gets small bursa sacs filled with fluid that hurt like shit when they get pressure put on them.

I’ve found Epsom salts in a hot bath and soaking for a good 30-45 minutes helps to ease the fluid build up out.

Never really tried heat because I thought it would cause the fluid to expand which would be bad. I'm up for options and I've never done Epsom salts so I'll go grab some. Thanks

I know your pain kinda my right pinky bone the 5th metacarpal has been broken for about 7 weeks I haven't been to the gym since, I'm wasting away I feel like my sleeves are loose my right forearm looks like a spaghetti noodle

I've broken my 5th metatarasal 3 times in the same spot. And a 5th metacarpal. I miss one leg day and take a few extra rest days and I'm thinking damn where'd all this extra room in my jeans come from I must have lost 5 pounds already lol

I think maybe the reason I didn't immediately say this won't fix itself and go is because a friend of mine has fluid in their knee and its bruised and swollen up like a balloon. They just had a ton of fluid taken out the other day. Mine isn't nearly as bad so I've been hoping giving it some time will allow it to heal. If you guys don't think it will I won't give it anymore time and I'll just go. Anything like this happen to you before?

I've got the same problem with bad joints from prior injuries. I'm probably radioactive at this point from all my X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans. Never skipped the doctor when I knew it was necessary. This time I wasn't sure which is why I asked.
Also before my last surgery I was hit by a car and the doctor said the MRI shows scar tissue and didn't recommend surgery. After two years of pain he finally agreed and told me they found bone and cartilage fragmentation behind your kneecap which is why I was in so much pain. Had to shave the back of my kneecap and clean up the meniscus too. Kinda lost some faith in imaging after that experience but so far PT hasn't done me wrong for anything else since then.

Can you check it out - it's just about at eye level for ya haha. But no seriously I hear ya. I've never been one to skimp out on a doctors visit for an injury. I usually give it some time to see if it heals on its own before hand unless I'm positive I broke or tore something. The only reason I haven't gone yet is because it doesn't feel like a tear and there's no swelling or bruising. I was wondering if there's any hope this sort of thing can dissipate on its own and if there's anything I can do in the meantime. If not I guess I'm off to the doctor no sense in waiting.

When I've had any kind of leg issues in the past where its caused them to feel slightly weaker, such as bad quad injections etc I find going just slightly wider on feet positioning in deads by about an inch or 2 really helps with stability and strength in the lift. Just not too wide where you can end up catching your knees in the ascent though Smile

Come to think of it I pulled conventional since I was using a lighter load. Usually I have my feet just outside my grip and I catch my shins before the knees. I suspected whacking my knees but I'm not sure since there's no bruise. I've been trying to use the cue "push the floor down" instead of just trying to stand up to get more power. Switching stance, routine, cues, and speed in one session doesn't seem to have been my brightest idea.

Give it about 2 weeks and see how it feels daily. Also, wear a knee sleeve or better yet, a brace if you have one.A brace while in the gym working other bodyparts and a sleeve for daily prevention. The neoprene sleeve will keep that area warm, and help the swelling/fluid build up.

I've got a pretty good arsenal of knee braces. Sleeve, sleeve with kneecap cutout, sleeve with metal hinges and padding around kneecap cutout (what I use now), adjustable surgery hinge brace, full immobilizer. I also still have the ice box from the last surgery that pumps ice water thru the pad. I'm thinking about giving that a try I just don't want it to stiffen up. Thanks for the reply I'll look into that brand.
