+ 2 Food cost.

ad

With inflation food cost is so much higher. I figured I would make this post so everybody could share tips on how to save money when trying to achieve their goals. Food is the most expensive part of this by far. I try to buy in bulk. Like a half a cow from a farmer or a bunch of whole chickens. But this isn’t an option all of the time. Rice is still cheap and chicken for the most part. So share your tips. The community could use it.

Most people with chickens have them as a hobby and have so many eggs coming out of their ears they don't know what to do with them and are usually more than happy to have someone take a few of them off of their hands.

Costco rotisserie chickens.
$4.99 break it down to 2&1/4lb of cooked weight meat.
$2.2 per pound. About a dollar a meal for 7-8oz portions.

They’re subsidized to get you in the store so they actually take a loss on them.

Makwa's picture

Who eats just 7-8oz Lol When I get one of those the whole thing is gone in one sitting.

Shop at different markets, create accounts or use their apps. Check the weekly ads, cut digital coupons and stack them with rewards coupons. When you find a good deal stock up, freeze some food, then go back and get a voucher.

For example, I found steak on sale and bought a bunch, went back on the last day of the sale and got a voucher. Stacked all my rewards points from the previous purchase, returned when the steak was back in stock and used the voucher. Got an extra dollar a pound off from the rewards, ended up paying less than $3 a pound.

Buy a big ass 20lb bag of rice, learn how to cook it different ways. Use broth, veggies, seasoning, make cream of rice, rice pudding, rice milk, rice milk pudding all from scratch.... Use cooked rice as carb powder, sticky rice works best just warm it up and mince it in the blender with a little water, then add your other ingredients.

Check local farms, do a search online some farms have sites you can order from directly. I found a farm that had bison for cheap, contacted them and placed and order and met them at the local farmers market.

I have 17 chickens which give me plenty of eggs so that helps. Shoot a few deer to stock up in the freezer which is a big plus. Shot a 24lb turkey this spring which helped. Got few buddies who give my walleye every summer for helping them out with stuff. 1.5 acre garden keeps me stocked up on veggies for awhile. Fresh and then can a bunch for over the winter. 12 apple trees give me to many apples in the fall so I trade them to others for stuff like wild rice and fish. Peach truck just came by so I bought 2 bushels of fresh peaches for cheap. I can them so I have peaches for a good chunk of the year. I know what you mean though. Food cost is crazy. I still spent $300 on groceries last week and that was getting most stuff on sale.

The chickens I have are scraggly with no meat on their bones. All the energy goes into egg production. Pick them up and it is like there is no meat on their bones. My neighbor raises meat birds and in 8 wks they are so fat that they can't even walk Have to plop the food in front of them so they can eat. Those babies average 8-10lbs and they are definitely better than what you get from the store and they aren't injected full of saline solution to make them juicy. They are just naturally juicy birds Lol Cost when it is all said and done is about $3/bird. Pretty cheap. You should see his yard after butchering 200 of them ROFL

Dang Mak...haha. Let's trade places! You definitely have it better than some. No protein shortage for you.

I can always shoot a squirrel out of the tree from my deck if I get real hungry. Lol Every once in a while we have a problem bear at work that we have to put down so that is a real treat when I get to fill up my freezer with that. Last one was 600lbs!

DeeMan's picture

Haha Wish I was your next door neighbor I swear! This place your at and location can't be on earth..no way!

Wife left the garage door open last night and a bear got in and tore the garbage up. Of course he had to drag it all across the yard.

DeeMan's picture

Wow that's crazy. When you get a chance let me know where you're at cause I'm moving up there lol! (Joke). Bet the weather nice too cause I'm living in hell temps right about now

My buddy had a pizza sitting on the front seat of his car and the window was open. He was out talking to me by the side of my truck and bear ran up to his car and pulled the pizza out. Ran off about 40 yards with a pizza box in his mouth and then sat down and started eating it while staring at us. Lol Was about a 350 pounder so we just let it eat in peace.

Wow

Christ a Bear got in?!! Lmao The most exotic wildlife we have round here are neighbours cats although about 10 minutes drive out and you have deer running across the road in front of you!!! Oh and there are badgers too which come out at night, I hate hitting those. Last one that clipped the side of my car was still alive and breathing at the side of the road it was awful. I felt I had to do my duty and finish him off but the screams he let off when I drove back over him stuck in my head for the next 6 months!! I guess you guys can just shoot them when that happens.

badgers are mean as hell. Came across one sleeping near its den one time. Just slowly backed away. I can imagine the scream that thing let out.

Makwa, that’s some good living.

Can’t wait to buy a house so I can grow food. I love buying food from a farmer in bulk. Food cost is crazy now and I have 4 kids so it’s hard. My diet for eating now for my training is chicken rice and eggs. Kind of feeling the pinch. I did score a new job though for twice as much money. Finished my electrical classes so I don’t have that bill anymore. I’m going to hit the farmers market for my fruits and veggies. They cost about 80% cheaper there

Perfect time of the year for farmers markets now. Fresh and locally grown. Doesn't get much better. I would even pay more it.
Taste is so much better. Can't wait for sweetcorn to arrive. Primetime for strawberries right now. In another month my rasberry bushes will be popping and then a month after that I will have blackberries coming out of my ears.

scoobydoo's picture

You should look into ground cherries. They're pretty good.

My buddy planted some in my garden this year. They are kind of like small tomatoes aren’t they?

DeeMan's picture

You still haven't told me the location. I'm moving over there

Makwa's picture

The middle of nowhere

DeeMan's picture

So jealous of you. You have it made brother. If the grocery store can't supply your protein then wildlife definitely will. Never heard an animal say anything about inflation haha

DeeMan's picture

Lmao...smart guy

scoobydoo's picture

Oh boy. I would have told you to put them somewhere you don't mind them taking over. We have found them growing up to 30 feet from where we originally planted them. They are all through our main garden and we dig them up and transplant them or just throw them in the weed pile. They are part of the tomato family. They have a husk and you wait for them to fall to the ground. They taste great and you get different tastes from different ones off the same plant. Some have a strawberry taste and my favorites are the ones I swear taste like caramel. There's other flavors that are hard to pinpoint, but they're good.

Makwa's picture

Sounds like he is going to be busy weeding this summer Lol

scoobydoo's picture

Not this year. Next year. You shouldn't ever have to plant them again.
