Low Rbc

ad

Hi. I went in for my annual check up and my rbc is very low. My doctor put me on liver and vitamin c which helps your body absorb the liver. I am cruising on test at 200mgs a week which I thought increases rbc not lowers it. I am a little confused. I go to the Va for my appointments and cannot tell my doctor about taking test. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Have you any kind of a chronic illness?
Did you already tried B12 injections?

CP88's picture

No chronic illness ever. I have not tried B12 injections but could.

Anabolic’s do increase rbc. I doubt test has anything to do with it. I hope your VA is better than mine or that could be the problem lol... they should be doing test to see what’s causing it. There’s many things it could be such as anemia or autoimmune conditions ect... stay on top of it brother even if you have to go outside the VA (which I have had to do) until you get an answer of the cause

Thanks and Semper Fi. She said it may be anemic and wants me to get a colonoscopy done. Don't want to but have to bite the bullet getting close to 50yrs old.

Get it done. Worth the piece of mind.
My wife is anemic because of an iron deficiency and has low rbc because of this. Did your doc say anything about taking an otc iron supp? Of course I would not do anything without speaking to them 1st but bring it up next time you go in. How is your diet? Do you eat well? Get all your nutrients in? Well most anyway.
Watch them VA drs. They try and move us through as quick as possible. Be your own best advocate. Do not settle for anything unless you are satisfied. Good luck!

Yes, my doctor put me on a iron and vitamin b supp as of yesterday. My doctor has been great. She returns my emails quickly and I feel like she listens. I actually have had some pretty good treatment at my local Vs. I eat really well. I am going to follow up with them soon. Thanks

Glad to hear that. Sometimes its tough to find a good doc we can be comfortable with. Perhaps taking the vitamin and iron will help raise the rbc. When will you be testing it again?

I have to give a fecal sample first. You know that protocol at the Va. Referrals first than help.

Semper Fi brother.... I’m 42 & I have had 2 colonoscopies. After seeing what my dad went through with cancer, it’s a small thing to endure for prevention!! Get it done ASAP my friend. The worst part is drinking the laxatives LOL ... it could be many things, but start by ruling the big ones out

CP88's picture

Laxatives don't sound fun. Never had to use one thus far in my life. Lol

JARHEAD2's picture

You will have the privilege of drinking a big jug of it LOL

CP88's picture

Ugh. That sounds freaking horrible.

JARHEAD2's picture

All jokes aside, it’s worth it my friend! I told myself that the whole hour I was drinking it lol

CP88's picture

I know. I appreciate your help!

CP88's picture

Will do. I know I need to. Thanks for your advice

Do you donate blood or double reds frequently?

CP88's picture

No. I know I should. Just so busy.

WelshNmad's picture

shouldn't donate with a low rbc

Jayzgainz's picture

Not sure where op or you are but I know in the states. At least at my red cross location they check you day of donation and if your low its a no go and there is a doc handy to speak with. Also if your on the high side they remind you that you can donate double reds. If your hemoglobin is over 20 though you get to speak with doc too . But back to your point, no donation if your low (anemic)

They check your iron count when I donate, they prick your finger drop some blood into a solution and if it doesn't sink to the bottom you can't donate

CP88's picture

I'm not going to donate. Just provided a sample for testing and will see what the results are. Thanks
