+ 4 Carbs for Athletic Performance

ad

Hey everyone, I‘m an athlete and I just wanted to give an anecdotal experience when it comes to diet and performance. Backstory is that I have been eating a low-carb diet for about 2 years and my athletic performance was pretty decent but not amazing. I ran out of money sooner than I thought I would this past month so I resorted to buying a lot of pasta because its cheap and what I could afford to eat. My performance went through the roof, I had so much more energy, my endurance was probably 50% better and I had an extra explosiveness in my step. I didn‘t think anything of it and went back to my old diet, I played three games and with each one I was incresingly more fatigued, it was horrible, no energy, no endurance it was BAD. I realized that maybe it was horrible that I was so glycogen depleted so I started to carb load for my next game and turns out I was right and foolishly leaving carbs out of my diet was hurting me a lot more performance wise than I thought. I put on about 7-8lbs of water weight when I eat a lot of carbs and I look fat but my performance is sooo much better. I‘m now eating a high protein- high complex carb diet and its making a big difference. I just wanted to write my experience in case anyone is eating a keto or low carb diet as well and are feeling fatigued when playing sports or exercising.

Carbs are fuel, that's why, if you broke it down your muscles are 70%carbs and 30% protein. you drop carbs, you drop energy. You drop energy, you drop strength, e.t.c. The part is learning the balance as too much carbs is bad and too little will cause you to be flat.

I've had similar experiences with carbs. I try to stick to a low-carb diet but experiment with more before a workout. Too many, and I don't like how I look. I seem to bloat a lot in my midsection. Not enough, and I can barely get through my workout. Yet, more carbs do mean more training energy. Sure, I use a pre-workout, but stim-energy is not the same thing. I agree, more carbs make me look fat yet I can train much more effectively.

I eat fruit at 500g on a slow day, even dieting and over a kilo when hitting hard... my body just loves it. I piss more than once per hour at night, but my body just reacts well to it... grapes, pineapple, watermelon (any melon) even raisins if I can get them without a ton of sugar coating. Only my last 2-4 weeks of cutting do I have to cut it down, or if running 'strict' keto, but it goes a treat with me.

I have to have my carbs. I feel too sluggish and fog brain when I don't have them.

Life is too short for a low carb diet.
