BirmonI drift out of Bristol Bay. Our nets are 150 fathoms, or about 900 feet. We average about 100,000 lbs a season, and it's not easy to get that. It is extremely regulated. We are given 6-8 hour windows of time to fish. We are monitored by State Troopers on high speed Zodiacs and helicopters. An example of a penalty could be say we are allowed to fish from 4am to 10am. But I don't pull my net out of the water until 10:01 AM. A trooper sees me, bam $5000 fine and a misdemeanor. On the big pollack trawlers they actually have State and Federal monitors on board.
I think you're referring to international waters. Where they put out nets and just catch whatever they catch, not targeting anything in particular. Yeah it's gross and greedy. They get whales, sharks, anything and everything. But they aren't going to eradicate an entire species.
Birmongreeen13 is right. I'm a commercial fisherman up here in Alaska. That's how I earn my living. The fisheries in Alaska and the US are very well managed. If there a low escapements and low counts the fishery gets shut down or limited. We are getting record runs in Bristol Bay. It is not threatened.
There is overfishing in certain international fisheries, that is true. But nothing that would threaten the population of Earth.
If I were you, I would be more worried about farmed fish and the chemicals they use in raising and processing. Did you know a farmed salmon will not naturally turn red, like a wild salmon does? They are dyed red. It's not healthy.
I'm also worried about these new "Frankenfish" they have genetically developed. They supposedly can not reproduce. I am concerned they will somehow escape into open waters, breed and mass produce, and destroy the natural habitats of native species. Wreaking havoc one of our planets most important natural, renewable resource. Destroying industry and lives.
Don't eat farmed fish guys. GO WILD!!
This is dramatized. Overfishing is a pressing problem in CERTAIN parts of the world for CERTAIN species. There are many issues that hurt the overall health of the ocean, overfishing is just one. Non-indigenous species, coral bleaching, global warming, etc. all play a role in the destruction of our natural resources. I am a spearfisherman, as well as a conservationist. This issues are noticeable on a personal level over the years. Enforcement of already existing restrictions is paramount. I believe non-indigenous species cause the worst damage to our delicate ecosystems.
not mention the miles of plastic swill that is sitting somewhere off the Hawaii Islands..
billions of little pieces of plastic that has been dumped in the oceans for years.
WeatherwedOne aspect that of this issue that I hadn't considered until recently is how much of the world 3rd world population is located on the coasts. Their primary food source is the ocean.
Hopefully they can start a cloning process cuz at the end of the day the world will never change.
This is partially why I don't eat fish. If you put a microscope to any of the meat/animal markets you will come to the same disturbing facts.
AnonIve always said eating fish is irresponsible . You can count how many chickens ,pigs, or cows are on the farm, but its nearly impossible to count how many fish there are . Plus there is a direct link to the health of shark populations and the health of the ocean, yet sharks are not protected .
Big net and long line fishing is devastating, but even sport fishing is bad. Because in sport fishing you are angling for big pelagics, and it is very common for the fish to die after release from a several hour battle. Then theres the issue of farm raised fish, which takes several pounds of ground fish meal to raise 1 lb of edible fish.
We need the oceans for food, we need the oceans for temperate climates, if we dont proceed with extreme caution we will indeed have a big problem.
Sport fishing does not have to be "bad". Simply using harmless circle hooks and aquiring knowledge on properly reviving game fish can eliminate the harm done to pelagic sport fish populations

that videos a bit longer but it shows how the fish are so much smaller than they were in 1950.
it uses a comparison of trophy fish (grouper) caught from the same charter fishing service today vs in 1950, it's a crazy difference
