Low Hemoglobin

ad

I continuously have had low hemoglobin for about 4 or 5 years. I go to the VA for all my medical care. They did a colonoscopy and found no internal bleeding. They just keep me on iron supplements and it never really helps. Anyone else ever experienced this and if so did you ever get your hemoglobin in the correct range? Thanks in advance.

In general there are three reasons for a low hgb: your not producing, your destroying them prematurely, or your losing blood. Since youve ruled out blood loss now you need to look at the other two. In my opinion you need medical help to do this but things I would look for are kidney function, liver function, and your spleen. On the rarer end of it we find cancer, certain autoimmune diseases, or HIV. However most of the time it boils down to vitamin or iron deficiency anemias. I know thats a broad spectrum of possibilities, sorry bro, wishing you the best outcomes

Thank you. No cancer or HIV which they tested for. I have another appointment in April.

Sorry ur dealing with this. I hope the VA has done everything in their power to take care of u.. I haven't experienced low hemo, but we have some very knowledgeable members here.. I just want to ask u,,

What's ur diet like and are u a smoker?

I'm close with several vets and u might as well call them Harley Davison and the Marlboro Man crew.. lol

Thank you. They have treated me well most of the time. I do not smoke and my diet is really good. My Marine Corp buddies would agree with you! Lol. Hopefully we get this figured out.

My hemoglobin is at 8. Normal range is between 13.5 and 17.5 for adult males.
