Family Help
Ok so I have a older brother that just got out from serving time he is also a addict and he has been gone for some months so he is all cleaned up and fresh looking. I want to do my best to keep him away and motivate him to stick with lifting and say fuck those other drugs. I just don't know how to approach someone into lifting and keep them there if all they can think about is getting high. Any advice from guys that used to be addicts and got into this lifestyle? Directions I can push him into being the better man I know he is? Please help man this is family and family is the most important thing to me, I'll drop everything in this world to help get him on the right path and get him into a better mind set. So any and all advice is welcome and thank you!!

I've seen quite a few guys on here that used to be addicted to drugs, but were able to use exercise and bodybuilding to change their life. Sometimes I guess it can just be a different addiction that takes over like body building has for so many, and the positive reinforcement you get from increasing your lifts and seeing differences in the mirror can help you stay away from the other stuff. Good luck Brother!
unfortunately robb, and bigwilly is right baha, your brother has to want it from within himself more than anything else to stay clean. it's never a loss to introduce him to other things to fill or replace that void within him. bring him with you show him the iron, if he becomes interested or intrigued with it, teach him brother. talk with him find out if he has a passion in another hobby or sport you both could find interest in because something could just light a fire under the bros ass, I had a real close friend do this with me, he invited me to train with him, one day turned into 1 week, then a month before I knew it I had the fever and passion to be better today then yesterday, soo much so I finally decided to kick an opiate addiction that was almost at the point it was going to take my life bro, I had already lost most of my worldly possessions, family and kids included. bodybuilding gave me my life back and the motivation and discipline I've received from it I was also able to save my marriage and family. love, guide, share and be there for him baha is the most anyone can do for someone who is carrying these struggles, it might just be what fuels him to want to make or keep that change. best wishes and share any success's with us amigo....
Ya man I'm hoping getting him into lifting will help relieve stress and open his mind up, realizing pushing that heavy ass weight off your chest will give you just as much adrenaline and rush as a drug does. I know it might start out as a hit or miss for days weeks and months but I'll try and keep at it, even if it isn't lifting he wants as a hobby I'll help him with whatever
For me being in and out of jail was enough after spending the best part of my 20's locked up I was well and truly done with it, or so I thought.
I turned 30 on my last sentence (40 now) and have never been back. However I've had about 5 minor relapse's since then, usually lasting just a few months before Ive had enough. Gets old real quick now fortunately.
This is something to bare in mind, even if he does start using again it doesn't mean it'll continue till he's eventually in jail. It maybe a little relapse, a few months blast, then like me just fuking sick of it and gets his shit together.
For me now I've been clean about 20 months and for the first time in my life genuinely feel like I'll stay clean. The only person who can do it is your brother, if he's really ready he'll stay clean, if not it'll eventually lead to him going back to drugs. It has to come from him, his own desire to do it. I know a few people who've stayed clean cos of family and other factors, but they eventually Fuk up, it has to come from within, doing it for family is just a short term fix.
Here's hoping though, this maybe his time to start living and enjoy a normal lifestyle.
Ya, all I can really do is hope he sees one day what he is really doing and actually does something about it and sticks to it. I know it's gonna be a war but I know he is my brother and he has the same mind set as me and he can be as mentally strong to stay away from that stuff
bigwillybro first my story, then my advice. and let me say im sorry bro, I know you love em but my advice not be what you want to hear. any how, the quick version of me. born to 2 drug addicts in a very poor east coast inner city neighbor hood. needless to say by 15 I was using drugs and in and out of correctional institutions.that went on for more years then im proud of. I tore myself to pieces and hurt a lot of people along the way. to be honest its a shocker im alive. when I run into people from the past they cant hide how surprised they are to know im not dead. I was truly a dead man walking. iv been clean for almost 13 years now and on the streets for 14 years. BRO, there wer no angels that came to me and no magical voice in my ear, I had just had enough. really, no one made a diference, no one!!!! its got to come from with in. befor i9 forget PM dog if you want more then I can say this morning. NOW, my advice bro. BACK OFF !!!!! you cant want it for him bro, if he don't want it then he will only drag you and your family threw the mud to get what he dose want. im not saying fuck him, im saying make him earn your help and friendship.and above all bro do not trust him until he give you and your family a reason to. addicts are slick bro, they'll tell ya what ya want to here. hell even go lifting with ya to gain your trust. hell hang out and do dumb shit with your mom just to appear like hes getting it togeather,,,,,,,watch him dog!! make him work for a better life. if he wants it , sure help him. but make him prove he wants it. you see so many times bro what they need is not what they want, ya know. yea he wants $$$$$ help and a place to live and nice cloths and all the stuff that you have. but dose he want to stay clean and be a family member????????? bro he needs to prove it and show it. how many times has he gotten help only to throw it in the trash????? bro im sorry to sound so harsh but I know this game and who it really hurts. bro PM if ya need to, I take this shit to heart.
I know exactly everything you are saying, I've dealt with my dad all my life being a slick lying mother fucker, always as nice as it gets when he needs something but when you say no he always says "are you fuckng kidding me? You are my son and I need your help, I never ask you for anything!" Always trying to give people that guilt trip because they won't help them get there shit. It's sad I watched my dad steal from his own mother countless times and she always took him back
bigwillyExactly bro. Makes ya wonder who the real victims are. We tear our selves apart not thinking about who wer really hurting. Hit me anytime about this dog. And trust me bro you can't get and keep him clean.he needs to saro I nd him self with guys that have gotten clean and stay that way. By all means be there for em bro but make him earn that shit.
well i wasn't going to comment as I don't like to divulge my past often but I can relate to your brother in a few similar ways, was I an addict? not to drugs but to the power and the lifestyle it came to selling them I was addicted to the money and power that came from that life style , I also know just how hard leaving that lifestyle is whether it be on my end of the spectrum or people like your brother considering I dealt with them earlier in that life style. addiction is no joke no matter what it is , let alone if you get sick and depressed when you try and come off it , or end up with an empty void left inside once you do clean up. a little more about myself, im 25 now and ive been on my own since 14 , ive had a lot of nice things and done a lot of nice shit also , but ive also lost it all when my time living that life came to the end , I also lost more while I was "living the dream" I buried my 2 friends , my mother, an aunt and my grandmother at 17 , but I was too busy to care because I was living it up like a rock star sure I went to the funerals , sure I was a little upset , but before then I was too busy, and after that it was business as usual. point being you don't think clearly when your addicted , and no matter what you see, or what happens in your surroundings you wont change unless you truly want to change. no body can make your mind up for you , you cant be helped unless your willing to help yourself. some come to their senses quicker then others, some learn the hard way. jail sucked, state prison suck more , federal prison and the diesel tour sucked the most , that didn't change my mind tho. my son did . the thought of him growing up in a broken home and slowly getting sucked into a similar fate , killed me bro. it helped me wake up and realize if I didn't wake up I was just helping the cycle continue. realizing all the people I lost that ill never get back because I was too busy trying to get money wtf all the time I wasted and damage I had done to myself and others smh now those are the demons I live with now every day. from 16 to 23 I was either locked up or was doing time on paper , but after awhile it catches up to you when your looking at armed career criminal in the feds , let alone all the probation with that time over your head that you''ll have to run consecutive as the next fuck up , and you have a child who looks up to you now , a helpless life and its your job to teach him right from wrong if that doesn't make you want to change there are deep problems and your judgment is cloudy. all you can do baha is let him know your there for him and you truly want to help him change but only if he wants to help himself because you don't want to see him drag others in your family with him due to their worry for him, or their depression because he isn't around when he should be, and you can ask him how he thinks he would feel if family on the outside started to pass away and there wasn't a damn thing he could do because his repeat decisions put him back in the cage. I hope he changes his ways and finds reasons to help himself and stay clean and be legit, not just for himself , but for his family members. you only get one chance at life then its gone, one chance at first impressions , and you never can take back the wrong things you've said, or the pain you've caused, or get back the time you've wasted. I cant take back anything ive done or lost but it has made me the man I am today, all I can do is try and help others going down the same road.
I've had someone else in my family before be addicted to drugs and he went to jail for 2 years when he got out he was clean and good for awhile and then did some drugs and realized he couldn't escape it so he just killed himself. I fear shit like that happening to my brother, it just motivates me even more to make sure he doesn't get an idea like that or end up like my father
I've been in recovery going on 8 years now. Rhino is 100% right. An addict will not quit until they are ready. All you can do in be there to support them when they need it and lead by example. I would HIGHLY recommend AGAINST introducing him to AAS or even letting him know you're into it. It's more than he needs right now and will more than likely only start a quick (or long) spiral back down the wrong path. Training and lifting weights was honestly my stepping stone into living a sober and productive life. I also could not have done it without the support of my family and friends. I focused my days around training. And meetings. He should be around people that know what he's going through and are striving to be better. A 12 step program isn't for everyone but for me it gave me all the tools I needed to start a new life. Put an emphasis on keeping him away from the people, places, and things that led him to where he was before. I went through multiple rehabs and ended up doing some time before I got it right. Hopefully his time was exactly what he needed to realize thats not the life he wants to lead for himself. Be empathetic and supportive. PM me if your bro needs a resource for step work or just an open ear to relate to.
Thank you brotha, I'm gonna be here for him 100% I told him if he ever gets a urge to do something to call me, if he is bored to call me, if he needs someone to talk too at any time to call me. I'm not gonna go out and bash advice to him I think my best option is to listen and understand how he is feeling and feel it with him, I want him to know someone is always gonna be there to help him and help talk him out of going to parties or seeing the wrong people. I'm thinking bait living with him to be closer and let him know "I'm here"
I think a good stepping stone for him is motivational videos and told him to listen to them every night so he is reminded and re motivated to go back at it everyday.
And I appreciate the help!! All of you guys have been great advice it seems patients is also key with addicts, good thing bodybuilding is a slow sport
this ,may sound kind of f'd up but introduce him to aas i say to do this bc of how the addicts mind works "we" always need to take something a little extra in order to just feel right so give him some gear "safely" if you do this right he can kinda trade it off for the other garbage that will kill him or put him back in jail. you notice i said we before? yea ive been through this ad it has worked for me, its been years an years since i last did a drug. not saying you have to or should do this its just a suggestion but you also dont want to be too late bc once that old habit gets him again thats it, right now he has time clean so i hope this helps
The only thing that scares me about this idea is I had a buddy lady year that was hardcore into lifting and he was doing everything to get into the army, lost around 120lbs and he asked me about gear and if I could get him some to help him out. So I did and boy did he love it and everything about it, only thing that fucked him up was the PcT and that depression of normal feeling got him so he went back on drugs again ); that is what worries me is the shitty feeling of PcT and him thinking getting high would fix it
Ahh yeah I got you, like another guy said he has to want it and plus if your there for him pushing him through pct saying as soon as you get through this you can run again and whatnot. But again not saying do this just a suggestion
I will get him into lifting and take my time, I wanna help him build a foundation and then introduce him to it. Gotta build a better character and mentality first, I know it's gonna take a long long time but it is well worth the effort
Good luck bro you sound like a good brother
Family Always First!!
damn straight
Just wanted to say hope everything worksout baha don't have advice from directl experience but a lot of family members been down that road some of then gone just my uncle still around the way he speaks him and rhino sound alike I mean that In a good way agreeing with the advice he gave
Thanks sic. I've been through a lot in my life. My dad taught me how to weigh out cocaine when I was 9. I watched him get hauled off to prison for 15 years when I was 10. Watched my mom battle depression and try to commit suicide several times, Had my first kid at 15 and was a full blown addict by then. But trial and tribulation build character. The strongest people I've ever met were recovering addicts. You beat an addiction then you can beat ANYTHING. Wouldn't change my past cuz it made me who I am today. And I'm sure baha will give his all to help his brother stay clean. And that's all he can do.
Sound like a really tuff childhood I know that is a under statement to what you just posted but in all honesty I really agree about what you said a lot of things happen to you in life and does build character but I I'm happy that you overcame those trails rhino seriously bro and about baha every time he post he talking positive and even gave me advice when I needed it I also admire his drive and heart
Bro the only way to treat an is with another addiction find something that he loves to do and support him tell him he's good u have to build him from the ground up cuz addicts only go back to those drugs are addictions cuz that's where they find comfort so you must have patients and help him find something he's good and get him addicted to that whatever it may be take it day by day man that shit is tough but that's how I seem addicts just my opinion bro good luck
I am going to give him my all man, I expect it to be hard but I know he had a strong mind like mine. He never really had anyone there to tell him "no" like I did. We lived two different lives and it is hard seeing him get all the difficult things and I'm over here living life. I gotta do something for him, I gotta get him straight and keep him that way
Baby steps bro like I said it's like starting all over again for him u have to help him search for ah healthier addiction it's the only way and he has to have full blown support cuz one word can trigger him to go use that's all it takes one word said wrong or something he sees if u see him thinking alot it's cuz he's planing on how to use without erring caught so keep an eye out for that and keep him occupied don't sweat it bro let me know wats like I know for a fact been around addicts majority of my life lol
Bro I say this with nothing but love in my heart for you and your family, but I was an addict for almost 15 years, and watching the birth of 3 of my children couldn't even get me to stop. The only way an addict will quit is when THEY ARE READY!!! Nobody or nothing can change them bro. It sucks. I used to look at pics of my kids and cry at the same time I was crushing up pills cuz I couldn't stop. Going to prison was what made me stop. And that's where I found BB, and started getting high from that. Realizing I didn't need drugs to make the world a better place. But sometimes it's harder for others to understand that. You brother will definitely be in my prayers bro.
While he was in there he was lifting weights some and says he wants to be into it like me. I'm just praying I can keep him away and get him addicted to lifting weights!
Addicts are like children bro. We need tough love and praises when we do something good or accomplish something. And offer to go to meetings with him if he wants to go that route. It's always a good feeling when you have a loved one willing to support you and walk this road with you. He's lucky to have you as a brother bro. And I'm sure he's a good dude.
I'm a very honest person and I always tell him if I'm proud of him, I'll do anything for him man I wanna get him away from it. I know it's out of my hands to truly get him away but still it's family and I don't give up on family. My dad is a addict and I had him now, how low of a life he is it upsets me but also motivates me to stay away from the party life and keep on the path I am on. I appreciate your help man!!
Np brother. I'm always here if you or your brother need to talk. Sometimes it's hard for addicts to talk to people who haven't been down the same road as them. Just keep it in your prayers bro, even if you ain't religious. Like I said before, you're a good brother and he's lucky to have your support. And you're right..... You should NEVER give up on family no matter the circumstances.
Thank you, thank you!!
