bitcoin advice

ad

whats up guys....i was wondering which apps/sites you use to buy and sell bitcoin? i just placed a $125 order and wound up paying another $7 in bitcoin fees on top of it using the coinbase app (4 to buy the bitcoin and 3 when i sent it). i was just wondering if that is the going rate, or if other apps are a little cheaper. the $7 wont kill me this time, but i dont wanna keep paying at least $7 every time if i dont have to...im imagining the fee is higher if my order totals are higher anyway.

Lads what happened early Feb.... if anyone can remember? Was it the talk of the asian banks clamping down and/or regulating?

Just looking back over the last month/2 there is solid opportunity to dip in and out and double your investment as you do. Across a few of the coins too

Pale's picture

It was a combination of January/February traditionally being the low months, an overheated market and a steady stream of suspiciously bad news. I am still in

giardap's picture

Thanks Pale

I got to the party late and lost value all the way. Something is telling me psychology is getting the better of me at the moment and pointing me to greater risk!

Its a really interesting game and you have been on a hell of a rolercoaster from what i see here

The whales tried like hell to shake everyone.

Bitcoin fees at their lowest prices in 18 months...

leanbulk819's picture

Update: just noticed that my bank charged me another $3 for an international transaction fee

leanbulk819's picture

Damn this has turned into quite a heated debate I was just trying to find the lowest fees lol

Dets's picture

Bitcoin will be phased out in the future, its too pricey and not completely anonymous. Examples like this are why.

Greg's picture

Shows how little you know. The fees mentioned above are coinbase fees.

A P2P bitcoin fee is now under $1

Compare that to other wire services which have percentage based fees 20 fold higher and with ZERO anonymity. (and often on camera) coupled with frequent problems of receivers being blacklisted.

I'd think it's such a no brainer you'd be 100% behind it.

Dets's picture

W/e, if thats the tone you take, I'd much rather talk about esters and pin locations on this site and let you guys take the lead since thats your area of expertise and I would never question it. No way of showing what mine is so I'll just leave these two facts for anyone else curious about what I'm saying.

Fact. Bitcoin is not truly private.

Fact. When the network is overloaded, transaction fees go up.

Without even getting into detail about gas costs vs transaction fees or the debate about block size and whether you can either implement Proof of work vs Proof of stake in a system that has an estimated billions in lost coinage , Bitcoin doesn't do as good of a job at being a true crypto currency as most people think it does.

Just remember, I never claimed to have some knowledge no one else does. All that I'm saying has been a debate in the crypto-verse for a long time and I shouldn't be spoken to like I don't know dick about what I'm saying or that you have access to some information the rest of the world doesn't.

Pale's picture

Well here is one for you. No matter what, tracking down someone on the blockchain is a fuck of a lot harder than looking up the ID you used to send money the other way.... Drops the fuckin mic..

shaun1's picture

Damn, X2. As soon as my dumb ass can figure out bit ill never use ID, chain base money senders. Its just way to risky. Like Greg said above 9xs out of 10 your on the big screen in plane site cold busted.

Owes a Review × 1
Dets's picture

Not sure why both of you are taking this stance, dropping mics and all lmao. Your last post said "Blah fucking blah" but I guess that wasn't enough. Here goes.

There are multiple different methods of tracking transactions if you know if partial amounts of data and its been known for years. They are just now coming to the table with different methods of how to prevent tracking and its still in the developmental phases.

http://cseweb.ucsd.edu/~smeiklejohn/files/imc13.pdf

That's on User Clustering. 2013. Since then, the FBI has had other cases where they track ledger transactions. That is why there is a new breed of privacy coin and I wont mention which ones but there are some in the triple digits of value and in the multiple billions of market cap that have actual privacy IPFS and TOR browser anonymity built into it. Why are they that valuable? Because they are an actual crypto. Not a fake public ledger.

But w/e, I'm not here to change minds. My portfolio speaks for itself. I hope you don't take anything I said personally, after all, I'm not the one questioning how much you know on this particular subject, one that you equally have no idea of what I know about either.

And since you don't really care what I have to say, this is more for anyone else that's curious as to what a healthy debate actually looks like. After all, you aren't certain any more than I am what tomorrow brings. It's all speculation.

The new company that's focusing on privacy?

and they are just getting started with a 3 phase security system that has yet to be tested. Its been a year and no one has heard since. And you know why? Because it isn't possible. I've talked to people who program Solidity on a daily basis and have looked at the white paper.

Anyway, I don't come here to debate or talk about this stuff in particular, I get enough of it in my real life. I don't want to start some kind of debate when I'm the only one talking really so that's enough from me about this.

Greg's picture

I don't come here to debate or talk about this stuff in particular,

Really? then why this comment?

Bitcoin will be phased out in the future, its too pricey and not completely anonymous. Examples like this are why.

You're missing the point completely. privacy wise it's not perfect. But there are steps you can make that can make it very difficult to track. The alternative is handing your ID on a silver platter and often times on camera.

As far as the tech, it too has evolved and will evolve further.

As far as a "discussion or debate? You posted an opinion as a statement of fact. I countered your argument. For now, crypto is still safer and cheaper than your traditional option. Bitcoin is by far the most widely known, and accessible of the cryptocurrencies. The backlog of spamed transactions is gone, CB is implementing segwit so fees should remain low for quite some time. And, fees would need to be over $20 before a wire service would start to look more attractive.

So your options:

Cash in the mail
In person exchange
Alt commodity like gold or silver.
Barter
Cryptocurrency

Say what you will, cryptocurrency is overall your best option.

You actually sound like Ver peddling his shit coin.

Is that you Roger?

Dets's picture

Yeah because I mentioned one shit coin here right. I've written 2 replies and specifically didn't mention one coin.

Hold on to your dinosaur all you like, I won't talk you out of it. Any sources that have even a hint of tech savvy will start using a real privacy coin in the near future. It'll take on example, but it usually does for the industry to follow suit.

And there is a way to bounce your bitcoin wallet through anonymous nodes, I use it myself. But the majority of the public doesn't. In the near future, we will have enough information on public domains to be able to track it and they have already started to flag accounts.

https://www.coindesk.com/downside-tracking-bitcoin-blockchain/

You want real change to the system? Tether and Remit services. Thats what is going to change and its happening now as we speak. Being able to change any FIAT into cyrpto on the dime is a game changer. Then your bitcoin is 100% worthless in that respect (PED transactions) since there will be literally 1000's of other on demand services that exist right now and liquidity will be better. Look up coin.ph, its huge in the Philippines. You can already transfer any tether USDT or EURT into crypto. Stronghold announced they will do the same. Why even bother to use bitcoin then when you can transfer in seconds with any crypto, sources choice.

Now thats my last post.

Greg's picture

I am not in disagreement with most everything you say. But for here, for now, for widest acceptance, Crypto is your best option and Bitcoin is one of your best crypto options. Simple as that.

For someone who didn't want to debate the matter, can you tell me why you felt the need to post in this thread?

Bitcoin Is going to see the light of day. Governments, Merchants, and consumers are going to want KYC If bitcoin is going to get to a multi trillion market cap it's unavoidable, or I should say inevitable.

LN uses onion routing. A P2P payment channel will be secure and private. Trick is not to expose your "private use" funds to a "KYC" wallet or funds be it on chain or 2nd layer.

Dets's picture

Honestly, I'm not sure, all I wrote was that Bitcoin was going to be phased out, literally one sentence and it led to this.

I replied because you and Pale are moderators and I've learned alot from the both of you, indirectly, through your posts. I respect the both of you for the effort and time you've put into this place so I respected your time to reply to my post accordingly.

But outside of that, I'm never the person to say "Well actually...." in any public situation. I'm not that guy. Anyone who knows me understands I don't have to be that person to get my point across. Plus, I don't have to teach people who don't work for me or that I don't have a personal interest in.

And why am I interested? Believe it or not, what happens here is on the cutting edge. What happens in markets like this in terms of privacy and how payments are made filters through the entire world. It's like porn with VHS. Technology adapts to the needs of its users. This market is a small one but it follows trends, the same as everything else.

Pale's picture

We are all crypto traders here I assume and if so you surely know the rumors of BTC's death are greatly exaggerated. Sure there are alts that are up and coming doing great things to push the envelope in all kinds of directions but the fact is BTC is king, if it goes down they go down, if it rises they rise. Keep that in mind.

Dets's picture

At the moment, the market does move based on BTC movements, you are right. But the market is basically a year old publicly and has half of the market cap of Apple. Its small. Tiny.

Its also brand new and has great IP. Lots to see, Bitcoin is just the start. Once any form of utility takes shape in the alt coin space it'll be a game changer for the whole industry.

Greg's picture

Don't underestimate the power of name recognition. It's like arguing Coca-cola will never maintain dominance because it was one of the first on the market but there will be hundreds of thousands to follow.

Also, it's all open source. there is no proprietary tech that can be patented. Bet is if one tech proves to be a gamechanger, all coins will adapt it. Of course, you will have your Moxie's that will fall away.

As the market cap expands, volatility diminishes. It won't matter what coin you hold. By then you'll have cross chain tech. So which coin you have will be more of a preference then a matter of utility. Bitcoin will be to cryptocurrency as Kleenex is to facial tissue and Coke is to soda.

Pale's picture

I never claimed it couldn’t be done but it is laughable to think anyone is going to waste time tracing your little order on the blockchain , it simply isn’t going to happen. Besides that sealing the deal and proving it is you is a whole ‘nother Issue. I’m done. But please do not underestimate how much Greg or myself know about crypto. Smile

Pale's picture

Blah, fucking blah....

IrishJerk's picture

Yep that is not a bad fee. I pay more with WU but I don’t trust bitcoin yet. If the mods say it’s ok ....I may give it a try. I’m just too lazy to change my ways.
hahahaha

leanbulk819's picture

I just found out I can send wu without leaving the house...but if I send that then I have to wait for them to pick it up right?

IrishJerk's picture

Yeah I tried it WU app didn’t like my bank.

Pale's picture

I agree with the others but if you were sending money the traditional ways you would have paid more regardless.

leanbulk819's picture

yeah i mean the $7 i paid today wasnt a big deal, im sure it costs less than western union.......if i used a higher amount, i think the fees would be even higher. anyway im checking out more wallets to see if theres a cheaper one

Pale's picture

No, usually with BTC it is the same no matter how big the transaction, the only way it goes higher is when the demand is ultra high.

leanbulk819's picture

ohhhhhh ok cool thanks, i didnt know and have never used bitcoin before

Greg's picture

Use our search function to search Bitcoin or BTC.

To avoid constant fees buy a larger amount, move it to a personal wallet like electrum, send from there without paying the CB "buffer fee" and "transaction fee". To send bitcoin these days from your wallet is under a dollar.

leanbulk819's picture

actually i dont think they have electrum for iphone....i just looked and nothing came up, do you know of any other good wallets?

Greg's picture

Google bitcoin wallets I'm sure you'll find a few.

leanbulk819's picture

thanks ill give that a try next time
