If you have a jeep and had to swap out engines then can you please tell me cost that goes into the job? I have very little mechanical knowledge but would love to get a handle on it. If you want you can email me at [email protected]. I have a 1990 YJ 2.5L and there is an existing problem with water mixing with my oil. The head gasket was replaced correctly, the headers inspected for cracks, and the whole nine yards done but I continue to find the oil in the same condition. Now I am finding a knocking noise the comes and goes. The noise almost resembles this that I found on youtube; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU-NgnGbdHY.

your biggest cost is the engine... the rest you can do yourself for the cost of rental engine hoist, a weekend, and a 12 pack for your friend that's helping you.
But I would follow Nittis advice, for 5k to 10k you can buy a replacement jeep 10 or more years younger than yours. Offset that with selling yours for 1k - 2k as is.
One thing there is no shortage of is jeeps.
Bro, it's going to cost as much or more than the car is worth. Your motor knock is not a good sign. Usually that tap is the sound of impending doom. And given the fact that you're already having problems with the head gasket and water infiltrating the system, it's safe to assume that tapping sound is bad news! I can email you if you like and explain more but a 1990 jeep, you're better off going to put out the $2500-$3500 for another , newer car. That's my estimate with parts and labor not knowing details. Most cases that knocking sound you hear when idle (goes faster as you accelerate) is the piston. Usually. It doesn't necessarily mean you need a new engine but it's a sign of wear and tear as the piston is beginning to wear in any particular place throwing timing of combustion completely off.
phil113kgThanks Nitti. Where I live Jeeps are hard to find and a jeep is what I want. If you can see my YJ you would understand. Once the jeep is in your blood then you're hooked. Me and my lady talked it over and getting a V-8 thrown inn will be the better option. Swapping out engines was in the long term plan but that plan was bumped up a whole lot sooner.
I don't have a jeep ( or much mechanical knowledge ) but I do have a 2.5l BMW with similar issues. Head gasket fixed, new valves, full oil change etc yet after a period of time the same noise as your experiencing returns. I've recently been advised the issue is with the oil pump. Not sure if this applies to your engine in anyway but perhaps something you could at least inspect and rule out.
