Even then there was NO WAY they would allow it to be open 24 hours unmanned like they do with 24/7 Pure Gyms over here now. When I was young I would put ants in big plastic containers and watch them build their tunnels and map out their new turf. Free trade is a great idea. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with US companies closing factories and firing all their workers, moving production to Mexico or china and save 70-90% on labor and then shipping the finished goods back into the US with no tariffs for all of us to buy for cheaper. Americans just need to suck it up and accept $20 per day in the factory like Chinese workers do so we can compete. Then companies won’t leave the US. We just too expensive, that’s why we’ve lost 40% of our manufacturing jobs.

We have a massive cheap labor population that is completely unused in the US. The prison pop. Now, prison as it is is already a broken institution designed to make people rich and for recidivism, if we took low to mid level offenders and gave them the opportunity to work, pay their stay and make a small % for when they get out while learning a new skill and guaranteed job placement outside, not only would we have true reform, we'd have competition against heavily industrialized countries like China. I'd design it to be something like 30% reformed hires and 70% convicted but imagine what we could make then and at what cost?

I was being sarcastic. The solution is not to cheapen our labor here. The issue is free trade is inherently unfair and not free . Our corporations feel no loyalty to the Us anymore. That’s a big part of the problem. We can thank McKinsey and co for that. So if they can close down Us factories and go to china and pay Chinese workers 1/10th what Americans get paid and then ship the finished goods back to the Us with no tariffs most corporations are going go do that. Because who doesn’t want to save 90% on labor and increase profits accordingly? Their loyalty is to the shareholder, not the people of this country. And shareholders like black rock and vanguard and state street love 90% decrease in labor costs.
The solution is protectionist trade policies to protect US workers. The playing field needs to be leveled. And if that means I can’t afford as much plastic garbage from china on Amazon each month so be it. I’ll pay more for everything to ensure my fellow Americans have better opportunities. And I already do as much as I can buying American made products when there’s that option. Because of the stability of the country is more important and a huge population of unemployed or underemployed working age males is bad for all us and is how you end up like Venezuela.
But I totally agree with your concept of letting certain inmates work and learn a new skill and set them up when a job when they get out. I think that by itself would significantly reduce recitvism rates. I would have to imagine not being able to get a decent job when they get out is the single biggest reason they reoffend. But we’d just need to make sure it’s not another avenue for wealthy private prison corporations to get richer and exploit inmates. Currently some do work, but it’s just bullshit jobs that do nothing for them once they get out.
