Any Doctors in the House?

ad

Trying to eat some advise on this cuz I hate going to the doctors so often and and wasting my time and money if there’s nothing wrong.

As I finish my warm up today I go to wheel a bench into position and boom I feel a sharp pinch in my left shoulder. After a few minutes of contemplating what just happened I decided to use the assisted pull up machine and as soon as a let my weight hang I felt this unbearable stabbing pain in the front of my shoulder. Couldn’t even press a bar without dropping it so I called it quits. Tried some light legs but couldn’t stabilize a bar for squats without pain.

The pain is achy, burning, and tolerably throbbing deep inside the shoulder making me think labrum but the sharp stabbing pain that comes with certain movements is right in the front. It’s weird cuz most of the time I can lift my arm above my head and to the side with no pain but god forbid I hinge at the hips and let the arm hang I’ll cripple over in pain. The shoulder hangs down lower than the other and by pushing down on it I can hear it crunch and slide my fingers into the socket.

Hoping I’m just being a bitch but this is a common problem. I’ve broken over 15 bones in my life, Most before age 20. First knee surgery at 23. I’ve possibly had a minor tear in this labrum for years but never checked it out. Since April I’ve had a knee surgery, October tore the right labrum and frayed a rotator, 2 months ago fractured the side of the knee. Now this. All within a year.
What the hell is going on? Why do I keep breaking bones and my connective tissue keeps tearing? If anyone has any idea what kind of doctor should I see?

Related question. Since I can’t work out at the time and I’m trying to cut should I keep calories the same or drop them some while I’m out?

The Impastable's picture

Cutting always means lower calories than needed for maintenance. However, given that you’re not expending energy by working out you’d need to recalculate your needs now compared to what they were previously with the exercise expenditure included.

I was thinking dropping carbs 50g since I’m on a 40/40/20 at 2500 cal daily while I can’t lift weights. Haven’t been able to up the cardio like planned the last two weeks cuz I’m adjusting to being back to manual labor after a knee fracture. Thinking since my only activity is work (although demanding) I don’t need the carbs. The mirror has been telling me I’m on the right track but the scale has not been as kind

Go and visit your local doctor. The pain you've described cannot be properly assessed over the internet. Is there any swelling or bruising? Limited range of motion is not good.

Johnny Bravo's picture

ROM is now only a little short of my normal which is good. No more redness or nerve pain in the wrist and forearm. Still stings like hell on the inside if I use it too much at work so no weights for me.

It’s weird if I put my elbow in my lap while sitting and push down or try to pull my elbow in while bent I can feel it slide out of place. Not all the way out of the socket cuz I’d probably be screaming. Just enough that it crackles like bubble wrap and I can begin to slide my fingers in the socket. Don’t think I completely tore something but yes something is definitely not right.

I’m very interested to see if anyone knows any conditions that cause easily torn tissues and broken bones. It’s common for me and strengthening the muscles don’t seem to be helping much although I haven’t had as many serious injuries since I started getting bigger and stronger.

briansteele's picture

Barths syndrome etc, muscular dystrophy however it would manifest in your eyes. These things are ruled out through assessment and testing by your doctor, any advice you would gain from the internet would be inaccurate.

Is your real name Mr Glass by any chance? Just kidding. I'm a 'doctor' but not a medico - so my opinion is probably not that valid. I have had a recurring shoulder injury for the last 30 years. Had all the scans, endoscopies, cortisone injections - nothing helped. Maybe you have some permanent damage that gym will continue to exacerbate. Perhaps alter your training so that you are training around your injury rather than aggravating it. That's what I have tried to do with a limited amount of success.

My mom always joked I need to be put in a bubble because how easily my body breaks down. I modified training to one heavy compound, one medium weight, and finish with pump work. The highest weight I’ll use is an 8 RM so it’s not even that heavy. Lowered all the weights to focus on form and switched exercises and grips to ones that don’t give me pain. It was actually lifting the handle to wheel a bench over and that’s what did it, not even training. In accordance with ur toilet humor post “shit happens” and it happens bad sometimes lol

Give this a shot for a few days and see what happens. Worked for me many times. Good luck

Thanks for the tip (no homo). I’ve told the doctor and the physical therapists many times before that it feels like something is getting caught in my shoulders and they said it could be any number of things getting pinched. They usually would have me do scap retractration and lower trap work as well as TRX stuff for the lower back but never the hang. I’ll have to prioritize it

Johnny, you've got some serious issues there. I myself would worry about them as seperate issues though. Id worry about osteoporosis on one hand and then worry about the shoulder joint + connective + soft tissue on the other hand (no pun intended).

In Ireland a 'doctor' - GP (general practitioner) is not the person to speak with other than to get a referral to an expert.

You need an expert, so get to one. Healthcare systems vary worldwide, but for us, its go to emergency dept. or go to doctor to get a referral to an expert.

Do that, because what you describe sounds connected (no pun intended), and serious, even if its just an impingement or bone spur or whatever, but with the constant breaking... I am worried for you.

Go to the expert, however you can.

I was told to go to an endo cuz I constistently have hypercalcemia and maybe it isn’t depositing in my bones. Parathyroid was normal so I was sent on my way. She did say if I broke anything else eat a bone density scan and I just did a few months ago so maybe I should get the scan. What about connective tiasue though? Anything that could effect that or what kind of doctor? The ones I see are only interested in surgeries and if nothing obvious I get the cold shoulder (pun intended).

Also I was chronically on corticosteroids my entire childhood and even adrenaline shots. I read a fraction of these patients develop these sorts of problems but I’m not sure who to see about it.

giardap's picture

Nice pun lol

Well Id say, go to an orthopedic expert first. A bone doctor. Thats the more serious thing, imo. Get the scan, for in general but also of the shoulder to check for spurs and impingements etc. No surgery talk until after that.

Cortico*'s are like anti-steroids for bone. I am not surprised you have had issues all of your life.

Get an ortho man, then if its just soft tssue or also soft tissue to worry about, you will have the scans etc and could see an active release therapist.

Ortho first, imo.

Re: hypos, you might have reactive hypoglycaemia, like me, just a thought. Try consistently eating a max of 50g carbs per sitting, to test and see if lowering meal intake is helpful. Or go vlc diet for a spell, see if the hypos disappear and you have your culprit.

I have an orthopedic doctor. In fact several lol. He didn’t say anything about a spur in the right one when I had the arthrogram. He said I probably have one in the knees though.

Also it was hypercalcemia (high calcium) not hyperglycemia. Always high calcium in my blood tests

Ahaaa! I thought it was a random jump from 1 topic to another!
Sorry buddy I completely misread.

that's interesting. That's a tough call, I mean it sounds like you are in the right hands with the ortho(s). The only thing I would wonder is if your gym work has caused soft tissue damage in the muscle that could be causing the tendonitus?

Shit man, beyond that, I am wayyyy out of my depth here. I can only tell you that I have had issues in adulthood with the shouder, torn rotator and small ripped x2 times as well as impingements from joint damage. The cause wasnt a degenerative thing only but genetics and damage to the soft tissue. Active Release Therapy was a life line... but thats only where the muscle is affecting a shearing tension on the tendons. That probably wont help you though, sorry buddy.

Hi mate.

Honestly go to the Emergency and get checked ASAP. Stop guessing what it might be.

Do not gamble with your own health.

I wish you a quick recovery.

Going to the doc is "wasted" money? Seriously?

There are plenty of crap doctors out there. The key is to do your research and find the right one. This includes physical therapy as well.

Johnny Bravo's picture

I think it’s maybe my perception of the practice I o to. Ran into Tiger Woods there so it’s a respectable place. Seems like the doctors are only in it to get surgeries out of the visit. But yes I’ve done PT 5 times. For example after I was hit by a car they found no tear so I was pretty much ignored. After 2 years of complaining he said oh there’s some scar tissue so we’ll take it out. Turns out there was an eggshell fracture in the back of my kneecap that was giving me pain

Bro it sounds like ur not letting ur body properly recover and judging by ur age it’s ur lack of patients. I’ve had similar injuries and I would give my body the proper time off so I can heal and comeback in full health. And I’m sure the doctor has already told you to stop lifting crazy and or for u to get off the gear.

Take this time to heal properly and mature a bit not trying to lecture you but I’ve seen so many young guys get hurt just like ur story and guess what they can even lift anymore like they are fucked so think long and hard because this game is about longetivity. Good luck

Johnny Bravo's picture

It’s just mind blowing to me how fragile my body seems. I’ve never been on cycle and in all honesty been going light since my right shoulder and knee are healing. I wanted to heal up first before I tried but it’s just one thing after another. I’ve literally tripped over myself walking and my foot broke. When I was 12 I broke 7 bones in a year. Something just doesn’t seem right. I wasn’t even lifting anything I was moving a bench. The heaviest sets I do are 8-10 RM I don’t even take it heavy anymore out of fear

Hustle28's picture

I got hurt going through a frogman program and it killed me bro literally my shoulder was fucked and I needed to swim daily so just imagine I had to fall out . Anyways I took the time off like around 8 months just focused on running and keeping a strong mental state and later on it all worked out swam faster than most of the guys in my group who were college all American athletes.

This old UDT guy totally helped through my injury with some warrior remedy it was nuts very hooooaaahhhish lol
