+ 5 Lay Off the Protein Shakes!!!

ad

This is something I've felt strongly about for a very long time, and it has helped me make some serious improvements on my physique over the past couple years. Protein shakes...

First of all, I believe shakes are way over used. Of course, no one can deny the fast absorbing protein benefits from whey isolate post workout. That plus some quick carbs is a lethal combination right after training as long as you hit the food an hour later. However, I think its too common to see guys using protein shakes to hit they're daily protein requirement.

If you say that you get 300 grams of protein a day, but you have 3 50g protein shakes a day, only HALF of your protein is coming from whole foods! EDIT: From my own experiences, I've noticed my body responds better to the protein I get from whole foods. When I first starting seriously training, I did just that, I ate 3 whole food meals a day, and 3 shakes. I made decent gains and it helped me learn about nutrition and how it can effect your training. After that, I started eating 6 whole food meals a day, with a shake or two here and there. The moment I switched to that, I made more significant gains than any cycle has given me.

I understand some people are just unable to eat 6 times a day because of work or other reasons. In that case, anything is better than nothing. Some things that may help in that situation is try different types of protein powders. I like to use 100% egg protein if I ever have to replace a meal with a shake. For me personally,it absorbs way more efficiently and leaves me feeling less bloated.

All in all, most of you know that the work you do in the kitchen is the hardest part of this game. But if you're going all in with your body, which everyone on this site is, then you are doing a serious injustice to yourself by half-assing nutrition. So eat clean, eat BIG, and GROW!!!

shakes are only good post workout because of quick absortion - try a shake when your hungry - you'll be hungry again 30 minutes later because all you did was consume liquid

agreed, one protein shake a day, real food gets absorbed way better and is utilized and metabolized in a more efficient way

I'll take personal experience over most "scientific" studies. Personal experience is, by definition, something that has worked for you and may not do the same for another. The issue I have with many studies is that they Seldom mention that fact and there are far too many variables between different people and no two are likely to have the same results. Personally, if an idea; or one's experience, sounds like it may help with an issue I'm having, I may try it. Too many people I know, read a study and are hellbent sure that it's the answer for everyone!

Good post, and one I firmly believe in. Not to mention, a nice slab of lean red meat is my first choice of protein...on the few days I can fit it into my diet program! Went to a party on the 4th and broke all the rules with the prime rib the host made. Was like an opiate effect after smashing that. Kept telling myself "it's full of protein, at least"!

Interesting post. What are you basing this on when you say gram for gram the protein from shakes is not equal to food? Is this your own personal opinion based upon your experience or actual science. Personally, I think I feel and look a lot better with 2 protein shakes a day and some post workout protein before breakfast.

But if you found some study that says protein shakes are inferior than I will def reconsider my meals.

Thanks

Sorry, this is all based on my own opinion, I should change it to that. Solely from my own experience, I've seen that whole food trumps whey. I've also seen articles saying that whey is MORE bioavailable than other protein sources, so I can see it going either way.

I think what plays a HUGE role in this is the fact that whey comes from milk. So many people have milk allergies and most don't even know it. One may not consider themselves lactose intolerant, however they may have minor reactions. When I have whey, I do feel bloated for a couple hours also, which leads me to believe I may have a minor milk allergy.

Again this is all based on my own opinion and experiences, I'm sorry if I've mislead anyone.

Nope. I really appreciate when people share personal experience because sometimes it is more accurate than science. Thanks a lot!
