Ruptured disc

ad

Hey guys, so i just ruptured a disc and am currently in the hospital.I’m in pain and pretty bummed out about this whole ordeal. Wondering if you guys have gone through similar experiences and how long it took to get back in the gym?

The disc I ruptured is in the lower back( lumbar) so just wondering if there’s any exercises that I would be able to do in a few weeks when I’m hopefully no longer in any pain? I’ve worked really hard to get my body where it is currently, and I don’t wanna lose my muscle mass/ strength.

I don’t know, I’m kinda buzzed off these pain meds but really frustrated that I’ve been here for 3 days and most frustrated that I’m in this situation at all, so if you have any aadvice I’d love to hear it.

Focus on healing & getting mobility back. You may have to up mass over time, b/c mass is added strain on your spine. One day at a time amigo.

which disc? L5S1? That is the easiest and self fusing. I had a disectomy it took a little while to heal and I just upped my reps and stopped going for my squat max. Changed my focus to reps and form.

From my experience with my did going through that. Once you have back surgery you are NEVER the same. I would do everything possible to not have surgery on my back. Don’t forget doctors are surgery happy. They love surgery plus it pays crazy money. Medicine has come a long way see if there is any alternatives but if you have to get surgery ask that it’s done arthroscopic if possible. Much much quicker recovery and less pain.

Late to the party but ruptured a disc in my neck a few years back. Take. Time. Off. Ease back into it. Focus on getting function/mobility back 1st. Weight will come back but listen to your body. It'll let you know what you can and can't do. 4 months post surgery I was 100%+. Hang in there. Take advantage of the down time. Eat clean and get some good audio books. You'll be back and better than before

Keep your ass out of the Gym and give the injury time to heal or you will regret it .

Get an inversion table and start using it for about 5 minutes daily and also look into yoga .

Damn Bud sorry to hear about this - how did you injure it first of all? I know quite a few guys who have injured their lower backs badly in a variety of ways, a good pal of mine has just had major lower back surgery and was bed bound in hospital for a few weeks after so I know the type of situation you are in. What I can definitely say right now is do not do any kind of lifting till you know exactly what you have injured and if you are in a fit state to lift anything again. It can easily be made much worse and life changing if you rush back to the weights room too soon before it has healed properly. I think you need to get it into your head that you will not be free of pain and able to train in a few weeks time mate - its likely to be longer than that.

I was doing deadlifts… never had an injury from lifting in my life and I’m really big on my form so I can avoid things like this. I’m honestly not sure if I hurt it due to form, or because I went up in weight, guess it really doesn’t matter anyway… Docs said it’s nothing that I need surgery on but they think a good option is Radio Frequency Ablation, where they go in and use a high frequency something or other to burn off my nerve endings and would therefore have no nerve pain. He also said that the most recent studies for back pain( lower back that is) is to get back to doing “ light duty” exercises and activities. So, hope this may help someone else if they’re in this situation no or in the future!
I appreciate the responses by the way!
