Zoloft for PTSD?
ad
So my doctor wants and has prescribed me Zoloft for PTSD. Pushed off going to the VA for some time, finally my wife talked me into it, not because I was having anger issues, but because she said I was becoming distanced towards her. We have two little girls, I just thought it was the babies, as we all know when you have kids together your alone time with your partner takes a toll. Long story short my new doc through the VA prescribed me Zoloft, I have it hand, along with a script for Adderall, which I’ve taken neither ever. Adderall for the amount of hours I work (oil & gas). Can any veterans chime in on the Zoloft and your experiences. Also anyone running Adderall can you chime in as well. Thank you fellas/gals.

I can't speak on the Zoloft but I was given Seroquel for PTSD. Before the Seroquel I was on Xanax, which worked great but neither the doc or myself wanted me to become dependent on benzos so he switched me over. I made it 72 hours (3 doses) before I wound up in the cardiac intensive care unit. Evidently Seroquil has a side effect for some people that affects the T-wave of your heart....very painful, I knew I needed to go. Stayed there on the morphine drip for 24 hours until it wore off and threw the rest in the garbage when I got home. Now I self medicate with MMJ, works great for me and I'm done with the pills. I almost didn't comment at all on this because I didn't want to freak you out. Just be aware of any adverse effects and don't try to ride them out if it goes bad. Never tried Zoloft and hope you have a good experience with it. Be careful with the Adderall. I've been on that one in college. It's prescription speed and will become habit forming.
I am not a veteran but suffer PTSD from a firearms incident when a bit younger.
I don't recommend medication.
Zoloft or zyprexa in particular, depending on your mind state, and if your depressed or fragile they can make you way worse for a few months and zoloft in those 3 months can make you have suicidal tendencies.
I recommend therapy, counselling groups etc, talking is best, a professional stranger gives better perspective and logic and will help you find the patterns that your brain uses in the path to symptoms and affects etc and can make your brain react in different ways.
It worked for me.
Meds fkd me.
15 years on and off psych meds and in and out of institutions voluntary for help.
Meds aren't the way bro.
Good luck.
Ps- zoloft is anti depressant for chemically imbalance in brain ( serotonin)
Zyprexa is big polar/ anti psychotic with harsh sides but does stop panic attacks and paranoia but zombifies you.
I agree about Zoloft. It actually fucked with my head more than the depression did.
Indeed and good luck satisfying the misses.
Hope you are well mate!
All good here mate - the heart meds are doing a number on the sex life, but there is always Cialis..anyway - how's your Grandpa?
Yeah that's no good mate.
And he's at the end now, any day he's just got worse and worse, he's bed ridden now.
Sorry to hear that. Spend whatever time you can with him.
Those types of medications work for some and not others. I’ve been on them all and they don’t work for me. The only ones that do are benzos and it’s not a long term solution. Give it a go and see if it’s right for u. Maybe this one won’t work but don’t give up and try another. However, I don’t think any will work if u don’t put work into it.
Watch out for side effects though. Some give the worst cotton mouth imaginable. Some make me get extremely angry. I would especially be careful if using adderal since it can raise aggression, especially with an adverse side effect from an SSRI. And withdrawal in my opinion is comparable to Benzo withdrawal. The zaps feel like the last thing I can remember before a seizure and it’s awful. Plus some make me have a range of ED problems from premature to no bone to not able to finish.
But when ur in a situation that needs attention You never know til u try. Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you
When I got home I tried six different things over the course of three years. All of them may have helped my anger issue and paranoia but it would make me a different type of person. Whether I lose my motivation or sex drive or just be numb to the world. That being said, I dumped everything in the garbage and started hitting the gym again. I may have to calm myself down from time to time but I feel better than ever and I haven’t had any type of medication over five years.
I do wish you the best of luck and I hope you find the right thing for you. Without changing who you are as a person.
Thanks brother. Perfectly said!
According to the VA I am 70% disabled all attributed to PTSD, I served 8yrs in total and never noticed any issues until I exited the military.
I was the same bro, I kept putting it off . Saying I can handle myself I do not need the VA's help, I dont need medication or therapy. I was wrong bro I needed help, I was on edge and angry, nightmares plagued me nightly . Medication can help provided you want it to and you find the right one, but the thing that really did the trick was therapy , talking to people with similar experiences.
As for Adderall , not sure that is a good recipe for PTSD, it would send me over the edge that is for sure, but we are all built different.
Best of luck to you .
Thanks brother, we have a lot in common for sure.
Im no vet, but have PTSD... it was very bad, for years on end. Very bad.
SSRI's/Anti-d's work for somewhere between 20-40% of people, only. So with that in mind, we couldnt possibly know if they will work for you for a pretty much off-label use based on a handful of studies where they felt it might have helped participants... if you know what I mean.... I can tell you that it did nothing good for me. It didn't help with stress/anxiety/depression or PTSD.
Sides were terrible, and the withdrawal was horrific due to the brain zaps. The worst of the sides was that, ironically... it made me suicidal for weeks on end. I mean.... can you imagine prescribing something like that which makes you suicidal? MAdness. The sexual sides were crap too. Low libido and anorgasmmia.
The withdrawal - holy crap... the brain zaps... and fireworks inside my eyeballs. The brainzaps make you feel like you are not real (I cannot describe it any other way) and you get the zaps when you move your head or eyes... so all the time... like an electric shock mixed with that jump feeling you get when falling asleep standing up but jolting awake. They lasted months on end for me.
No matter how slow you withdraw, it will not lessen the zaps.
Dak... I strongly recommend... as a person who has PTSD... that DBT and EMDR therapies are both worth exploring regardless of what you do with the zoloft.
(not everyone experiences what I did with zoloft, you might be one of the lucky few).
Thanks brother. Well said, I think I’m going to take your advice along with the Zoloft. I’ve always thought therapy was a waste of time but you have an interesting look on it. Thank you.
Respect. A lot of therapies are a waste of time, they really are (this one therapist tried to get me to relive the thing.... literally almost broke me.... madness). But still.... if you find one that helps deal with the heightened emotional states that come with PTSD, that works for you personally, then you truly are on the right track.
I really hope it goes well for you man. Good luck with the journey.
I was given buspar for ptsd and made me suicidal I stopped it immediately it's not a good feeling
Nah man, not good. Nothing good about that at all.
Hope you're doing well now fella.
Thanks bro I'm doing much better on proxatine I still have to take lazapran once in a while but felling pretty good now
Im really glad to hear that now fella. Good stuff.
I have ptsd I'm not a vet but I finally found a doctor that was willing to help me figure it out and she gave me proxatine 2 months ago and I'll tell you I feel like a total different person my panic attacks have almost gone away all together maybe check that out if the others don't work
Bro, i hope you manage to fix everything, the family is the most important thing...
For sure brother, ty.
PM me brother
Will do!
FR Accepted.
I have no idea about PTSD part of it but I have been on 150mg/day of zoloft for the last year for chronic anxiety and it is the only anti depressant i have found that works for me. Doesnt make me cloudy or overly tired. I couldnt imagine not taking it and living with that anxiety all the time again.
Appreciate the feedback brother, I’ll keep you posted, they have me starting @100mg daily.
I used to be very against those types of medicine. Had this idea it would make me less than for taking them. Only weak and stupid people take that garbage.
I'm strong enough to handle it on my own.
Then i found my self in a spot i couldnt get the "dog barking (like a doberman)
nonstop in my face" to shut up.
Just constant resentment and fear all the time right in my face , bark ,bark ,bark. Couldnt do my job . Couldnt sleep and i couldnt get a handle on it. So i discussed it with my doctor. Ive been sober for almost a decade. I was looking at putting a bottle/bullet in my mouth. I told him i couldnt take it. He put me on Zoloft. Took about 20 days to start working. It didnt make every thimg marshmellows and rainbows, but (no homo) i noticed every day the dog got further away. After a little more than a month it was way over there in the neighbors yard, behind a fence and smaller. Far enough away i could see it for what it was. Then i could really inventory what was going on in my head. Once i was able to see my part in my life i was able to deal with it. Once i did that i started to wean my self off. So i took it for about 3 months. I now know it is a great tool for those that need it.
As far a the scrip for meth pills. Dont know . I know where they would have me in about a month. Unemployed, devorced and at the dope house.
Dont want to chance that one. I drink coffee from day light to dark. Having my second right now about to rigg this unit up and go in the hole.(all homo) best wishes to you my brother
Thanks Bill. Appreciate you sharing with me, guess I’m not the only one out there with stuff going on. I’m going to give the Zoloft a go, and keep the Adderall aside for now. I’ll keep you posted, and we are already in the hole lol, we rig down next week then on to the next pad lol. No homo!
interesting choice to use for PTSD however there is NO one script for PTSD and since they are not likely to prescribe any benzoes it is likely that they have had some success using it. I am surprised that they didn't get you into therapy or even a group .... not a huge fan of pushing pills myself but zoloft isnt typically something that will cause you to be dependent on it so why not try it? do know that it takes a few weeks to build up in your system ....as for the other script ... personally speaking i ve never heard of it being prescribed for someone to stay awake. .... also did your general practitioner prescribe these or did you see the psychiatrist?
They want me to join therapy but I don't have room in my current schedule. Thank you for the feedback on the Zoloft, and it was a general practitioner, for now.
Top man keeping it together with everything that’s going on. Hope you find you’re answer mate.
Thanks brother.
Have had no experience with this but just want to wish you a good luck with what you do, keep your family together, family is everything.
Thanks, yup, family is everything. They are and always be my 1st priority.
