What's your favorite Whey Protein and why?
There are so many brands out there, yet I'm having trouble finding something good, without artificial additives and soy fillers. It's sooooo bad that a scoop that supposedly has 25 grams of protein, is actually 35-50 grams in weight.
I was wondering if anyone has tried something that is as close as it gets to being purely protein. Something that doesn't taste like a donkey's butt also.
The only Protein I've tried that fits the description about is ISO100 by Dymatize. It was hydrolyzed 'pre-digested' contained 25 grams of Protein per scoop which weighed 28 grams in total, making it 90% protein. It tasted surprisingly good and mixed effortlessly. However, it's 75 bucks for 5 lbs which gets extremely costly when bulking. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone can give me a few recommendations.
Cheers!

Animal brand on Amazon. Taste good - best deal and it doesn’t fuck with my stomach.
Saw the “75 bucks for 5lbs” of ISO 100, got excited, and then realized the post was from 13 years ago. --
Whathappened2018Ryse. Only use powder to make my cream of rice pancakes and ninja creamies. Pause
Strawberry shortcake flavor is awesome. I need to try the cosmic brownies flavor.
Also nutricost. Gmp certified, cheaper and good taste
Whey isolate from nutricost is similar to the iSO100 but more cost-effective, and has slightly more protein per serving
I been on a few but working for me right now with calories and protein is the "True Mass 1260"
1 scoop = 25g protein and about 615 calories with 8 ounces of milk, guess add the milk nutritional values and its significantly more. Works for me for now and they got it @ bb.com for less then 50 bucks and 32 servings if you just do 1 scoop (recommended is 2 scoops, I just splits that shit up there is no way i'm drinking all that in one sitting)
I now use an organic protein powder that run me $99 for 28 servings of 20 grams each. Steep, I know, but its the only product I've come across that doesn't mess with my digestion/stomach.
Trutein cinnabun
What about good old ON whey isolate? Cheaper than anything else listed here. Tastes great too.
Gaspari - Blue Containers. Either the "Size On" or the "Probiotic Myofusion".. buy it in 6 lb bags or
containers.24 grams prot. per scoop.
this stuff works for me.I load up the shakes with Frozen B-nan and Molasses and P-butter.
Tried the Ultimate Nutrition stuff.. didnt like it , nor gained anything on it.
MeinuntergangI used to be a fan of Gaspari, espeiclally IsoFast. I also liked Mayofusion, but I hate the new propbiotic series. I has 10 grams of carbs per scoop and a bit of fat so that makes the protein content at a little above 50 percent of the total weight of the scoop. Plus it's not optimal for post-work out because it's a blend of fast and slow acting proteins. The one time I used an entire tub, it gave me some digestive issues and turned me into a poopaholic.
It can be a bit thick. Thats why i break it up. Im not looking for "cuts". I lift and I eat. I use it more
like a meal replacement. Its calories im after. The amount of protein I eat is high. So the shake
is like filler for me.
Maxpro 35gram scoop 30grams of protein!
blackrock90truenutrition.com is the spot.
protein factory was found to be making their shit out of a farm site and it was dirty as hell.
FYI truenutritions protein was tested and had high protein content compared to alot of other protein brands
(aka you aren't paying for what you they say you are)
StevebCan you post a link to back that up?
MeinuntergangI'm going to take an valid yet contradicting arguments and post them in a separate entry and hopefully it gets turned into a sticky in the nutrition section. Credit will be given to OPs
Super bovine nothing else compares
Good to see all the protein factory lovers like me
Good this board is smart and on the ball
Hell yeah
We all rock!!!
Get big!
Protein factory
I make my own Blends
They have some amazing fats proteins and carbs
Unleashed is good product too actual worked and its natural ;)
Some are $$$
But they have 5lbs whey isolate for 25 bucks
That's 75 servings @23 or 26 grams protein per 1/3 cup serving ...mixes good
The higher priced one mix incredibly well and some flavored are like milkshakes for real
An last the SUPER BOVINE will make you grow
Shit tastes like beef jerkey and each little scoop is pure pure bovine proteins ..it's good stuff!!!
Musclepharm combat powder taste slammin get 4 pound bottle for 37.50 has almost all the proteins in one so it constantly hits your body for hours great for after workout and before bed
MeinuntergangGood overall choice, but I'd not take it while on cycle. The goal is to heal your torn muscles as soon as possible and having a blend or a spectrum does not do that efficiently. That's why I'd opt for Enzyme Hydrolyzed Whey pre and post workout and Casein upon wakening and pre bed. But, I'd like to try Combat off-cycle. Thanks for the suggestion.
Cheap Whey Protein - http://myprotein.com
My choice for a top of the line, post w/o shake (not the cheapest, nor the best tasting, but IMO fastest into the blood stream).... I go with ENZYME hydro'd whey, pepto-pro from proteinfactory (no flavor or sweetener). I haven't seen anything even close to it anywhere. Average peptide weight UNDER 300 daltons. Mixes almost w/out aggitation, but tastes like shit. Has to be mixed w/ something sweet.....
And add to that a tablespoon of glutamine peptides (NOT regular L-glutamine)... Finally, mixed w/ a quick acting carb loader.
I love Karbolyn... it's a corn derivative "homopolysaccharide", comparable to maltodextrin or dextrose, but supposedly absorbed "18.21% faster" than pure dextrose/glucose, but without the crash of a pure dextrose supp. Tastes great in flavors I've tried, fruit punch being my fave.
Above mentioned products aren't cheap at all... but I only use this combo immediately post work out, literally walking out of the gym. And for a time, when I was a bit more daring... I'd add 5 IU's of humalog as a kicker! Stopped that practice as sometimes I would get very sleepy and sometimes crash hard... too risky for this old guy.
Any other time I use protein supps is a regular whey isolate (iso pure is pretty inexpensive and found at most stores). Or sometimes I may just grab a muscle milk if I'm on the run as it's available at pretty much any gas station these days.
MeinuntergangOK fellows, on to the next question, which many would say is rather complex. Creatine Vs Dbol? lol Anyone here knows of a good Casein protein? I admit that I know nothing about it other than it's super slowly digested which is great for feeding while asleep. Luckily, I just graduated and I have more free time to educate myself about topics I really care about, but learning from experience as just as important as learning from the book. Share your experiences.
American whey on eBay it's 56 bucks free shipping for 10lbs has 26g per scoop and has whey and whey isolate mixed in one prettty good taste better price try peanut butter chocolate
try this for something that actually tastes pretty good, mixes easily, and is a fantastic highly digestible protein.
It is 27g of protein per 30g scoop.
http://proteinfactory.com/shop/whey-protein-isolate-cfm/
It's relatively inexpensive too. $12/lb and cheaper if you by in larger volumes.
That's one of my main stays
Although I only use one sometimes zero shakes per day as now I'm carrying cans of white breast meat chicken
It's 27 grams no mixing takes 30-45 seconds to eat and toss and they are like 1.80 each
I shoot for three each day on top of meals
It's been working better just got then last week four more lbs in that week
Love these guys. Their simple whey protein is my favorite. Any flavor I want. Cookies and Cream is the best.
I buy Species Isolyze, and Met-RX Ultramyosyn Whey Isolate. They both taste amazing!! Isolyze is 0 sugars and 0 carbs. the Met Rx is 1g Carb, <1 Sugars.. Amazon has a deal right now for it too 20% plus Amazon Prime ready.
MeinuntergangI will give it a try next time, thanks! I looked it up and saw it's 30 grams scoop, 22 grams of which is protein. That's 68% protein which is nice, but if you really want to get technical about cost effectiveness, it's still not the very best. I just ordered Iso100 5 lbs 'mocha' flavor for 48 dollars, which is an insane deal because all other flavors are selling for 71 dollars on amazon. I like it because it's 90% protein, and it's super easy on the stomach. So you get more for your dollar and it tastes good too.
i order mine in bulk and its a premium isolate 93% 27grams of protein per scoop and it costs me
about 325 shipped to my door for 25 pounds
Check out protein factory
Isolate 27 grams 75 servings /5lbs =30 bucks
So 25lbs =150 plus shipping
Fuck that 325 right ?!!
Hope this helps you
MeinuntergangThat's a good deal. But that taking it a step too far for me. I can't commit to something this large especially since I have an annoyingly picky taste receptors.
AnonUMP because its like 36 grams a glass and it tastes good.
You need to check the serving size on these protiens, I bought one that advertized 47 grams of protien !!
Yeah if you drink two glasses !
Meinuntergang36 grams of protein, but how many grams in total? You see that's the point, some serving sizes are ridiculous, sometimes a 21 gram of protein scoop actually weigh 40-50 grams in total which means it has a ton of fillers and over crap. So, be careful. I prefer Iso100 because the scoop is 90% protein, 25 out of 28-30 grams total per scoop.
AnonDamm it you are right ! Somehow I had that 36 number in my head, but I went and looked it up and its only like 40% protien per scoop @ 21 grams. Shit thats a bummer
MeinuntergangThat's why I HATE and DESPISE the supplement industry. Those whores are not regulated and can pretty much claim whatever so long they have the FDA statement somewhere on the bottle. The highest percentage I've found so far is 90% and that's 25 grams of protein in a 28 grams scoop. It's called Iso100 but Dossier is discouraging me from using it because it's hydrolyzed, which compromises the integrity of the protein structure, thus might resulting in weaker effects.
AnonOK I checked the actual label on my tub, and it was 21g per 31 gram scoop, so thats not quite as bad as I thought, thats more like 66% protien
this all depends on weather the protein is acid hydrolyzed (bad) or enzyme hydrolyzed (good). Read up man... this is why I've been goin to proteinfactory.com for the last 12 or so years for any powdered protein... no bs, and they will put all the info right out there for you to see.
ON gold standard, tastes great, quality
Hydrolyzed protein tastes extremely bitter... so I'd be very skeptical about the stuff you mentioned above. Then again... maybe they only had a small percentage of true hydro in there. They usually go by molecular weight of the peptide.... 520, 700, 1400.
Check this place out. http://proteinfactory.com/shop/best-source-of-protein/
I used to do the hydro520 post w/o but it started to get me feeling sick.... tasted like what you would think drinking vomit would be like.
MeinuntergangThanks for the tip, I usually go with Amazon prime bc it's free shipping, no taxes and no minimum order.
AnonAdding to this, you should stay away from proteins that are hydrolyzed. The process of hydrolysis is when molecules are broken down into smaller, more simple forms. Proteins are given their specific characteristics based on the arrangement and placement of the individual amino acids. If you hydrolyze the protein (break it down into a smaller peptide chain), you are changing the structure in a manner that the original characteristics are no longer present. So, hydrolyzed whey protein is no longer "whey" protein. Instead, it is a product derived from whey.
i disagree with this. isolate or whey takes 20-25 min to enter the bloodstream. by then you are already in a catabolic state. hydro whey or micronized whey will be absorbed immediately, so soon as it gets into your system you start recovery. optimum nutrition platinum hydro whey is a great product.
Anonin a sense this is like comparing apples to oranges. proteins are made up of an assortment of amino acids. each protein gets its individual characteristics based on the arrangement. (i feel like i'm repeating myself here). hydrolyzed proteins will cause for an increased rate of absorption, but what are you absorbing? hydrolyzed whey IS NOT WHEY. it is derived from it. that is all.
so, in a sense you are correct. the amino acids will be absorbed quicker, but hydrolyzing the protein's peptide chain compromises the quality by way of a chemical reaction. this reduces bioavailability. just because it says there is X g of protein doesn't mean you're body is getting to use X g of protein. this is where quality comes into play.
i would think that breaking down the branched chain to a peptide would increase the bioavailability.
you are partially correct Mr D...
nothing will be absorbed faster... but once absorbed, your body will not have to break down these longer chain proteins which will increase the rate at which they can be utilized by your body.
The smaller the peptide (protein fraction), the easier (hence faster), it is for the body to utilize.
Acid hydrolysation will compromise peptide structure... ENZYME hydro will not! This is why you must research your protein source!
MeinuntergangMine Enzyme Hydro. It was so strange that when I took it, I was doing the most vigorous work outs of my life 'first cycle while on prop and dbol' and I never felt sore, never felt weak and I was growing at an astronomical rate.
Anoni feel like i'm back in science of nutrition again. i love it
we do not have the ability to digest and absorb whole proteins. reason being, when a whole protein in absorbed, the body sees that as an invader and you get an auto immune response. the majority of food allergies are caused by this.
in order to breakdown a protein, an enzyme must be present to facilitate a chemical reaction, thereby breaking the chemical bonds holding the amino acids together. enzymes are not present in the blood stream. they are only present in the GI tract. this is where digestion occurs.
because proteins are too complex to cross the intestinal wall, they must be simplified. the simplest forms allowing passage are amino acids, dipeptides, and tripeptides. all poly peptides are too large and must be broken down to either of the aforementioned in order to enter the blood stream.
once amino acids and peptides have entered the blood stream, they contribute to what is called the amino acid pool. this is where the amino acids required for protein synthesis are gathered from. when the cell receives the signal from testosterone to initiate protein synthesis, a cascade of events take place. within the cell the nucleus houses the dna. an rNA carries the genetic code (instructions on how to construct the protein) from the nucleus to the ribosomes. the ribosomes will then begin the transcription process of constructing proteins using the amino acids available according the instructions delivered by MrNA from the nucleus. this is called gene expression.
I can cut and paste too.... you replied b4 I could edit.
Hydro proteins most certainly get absorbed and utilized faster than whole proteins. This isn't brain surgery.
Care to comment on your claim to stay away from hydro proteins? And can you address acid vs. enzyme hydro?
thanks teach!
