Using Bodybuilding to get and Stay Clean

ad

After yesterday, I wanted to redeem myself and bring up a topic that is near and dear to me. I was an active use addict for 11 years starting out in pills for sports related injuries, and progressed to railing H. Last November sitting in my bathroom I saw myself in the mirror, fat, out of shape, and a nose drip that wouldnt quit. I made the decision then and there to get help and kick the habit. After going through outpatient I was clean for 9 months when I was on verge of relapse. I needed something to motivate me, to get me off the couch and doing something that I enjoyed. I started reading eroids again, and the forum posts, Mens Fitness and watching Dwayne Johnson movies. [A BIG NO HOMO] That was motivation enough for me to make the decision to get back in the gym and develop a healthy addiction to weight Training. I've been back in the gym for 1.5 months now, and I have to admit, working out provides a much better high than any drug ever did. Sometimes my ill timed humor can backfire, but i am serious about getting healthy and staying clean. Any other brothers out there have similar experiences using weight training to combat addiction?

Great post. Thanks for sharing. Keep up your good work. I attend NA meetings regularly, pray everyday, read recovery literature everyday, work steps, sponsorship 2-way street, community service, and run and lift. I have a reasonable amount of happiness, and reasonable good health. One Day At a Time no matter what I won't pick up today. So glad I found this thread today. The Earth is not flat???WTF?

Admire your honesty brother i have struggled with addiction my whole life started with weed then X and finally the crack pipe sucked my soul then so did the H! If i never went to prison and set foot in a gym i think i would be dead!! I got out never looked backed that was 2 years ago then got a bit to comfortable and started drinking and doing powder like it was going out of fashion but nipped that in the bud and i am not going back this time!

I was a full blown heroin addict garbage can user for many years my man. I was active in school and always loved working out so when I got clean, this was my healthy outlet. There’s nothing wrong with replacing your bad addictive habits for good ones.
But I will say this.

If you put ANYTHING before you, or your recovery you will lose that shit. So keep it close to home, remember the pain remember the suffering, go to meetings, get a support group and sponsor, and the biggest thing DONT PICK UP NO MATTER WHAT.

It's good to be truthful to yourself when dealing with addiction, so after reading this I'm going to confront you and ask that you be 100% truthful here as well.

Are you sure that there isn't at least a little homo where Dwayne Johnson is concerned?

On a serious note, yes, getting into the gym and back outside into the back country, focusing on health, was a big part of helping me to stop drinking.

We all get knocked down and fail in life at one point or another. Just keep getting back up and finding ways to keep your feet moving forward man. The principles of bodybuilding are therapeutic and the act of excercising is good for the mind and soul. There are lots of members here who struggle in ways like you and in other different ways. Don’t be afraid to reach out to members here. Sometimes a stranger will present a perspective you never would have seen otherwise.

I have a close friend that found his path to recovery through the weights. He was bad off. One that you didn't expect to live long at all. I was amazed when he turned things around, and can say he is honestly someone I look up to these days.
He still has the addictive personality though. And while the weights and the gym are a healthy outlet, the cycles are continuous, and cross well into the abuse category. I'm able to reign him in from time to time, but he is aware it's a part of him.
Just something to keep in mind. The strength is you. The hormones are enhancement. Too much of anything will fuck us up. I'm not saying you or anyone here is irresponsibile with their use, I'm just saying it's too easily done.
Stay strong and congrats on being a warrior in a battle so many lose.

I myself too had an affliction. The battles I fought day in and out wasn't worth my longevity. By the grace of God or whoever I am 4 years clean. Now my main focus is restoring my life mentally and physically. I am thankful and grateful for the outlet of building a better physique. Truly the the meditation and medicine for the soul. It def has put those demons at bay. So again thanks for the great motivation. Seems I find tidbits of all kinds of things relating to me on eroids!

Congrats for being man enough to face down your demons. Many do not even try. This lifestyle, the pure body "building" lifestyle is a life changer and life saver. Keep taking it one day at time and fighting the good fight. The sun WILL come out tomorrow.

I'm glad you have found motivation but to be honest, I'm not entirely sure that Dwayne Johnson is not a Big No Homo. That's cool either way though, he is still motivating as fuck.

I get totally self-destructive if I don't go to the gym. It literally saved my life. Best of luck to you dude. Opiates are motherfucker. Don't ever look back

There was a guy on here named Rick. I really liked the guy. Unfortunately he is an addict. He got banned . Found out just this week he’s in prison for violating his probation. Every person on this board whether they admit or not s an addict. Takeing drugs, carrying food around, training on Christmas and your kids birthdays. Just to look bigger. Bodybuilding is an illness. It’s far to hard and long for a normal avg person to do. I’ve had kidney problems just from consuming to much protein. None of us are normal and I don’t judge anyone. Your in the right place...

Congratulations on your redemption

I've been in bad shape after an injury, I was eating codeine and valium like skittles and eventually realised it was a dead end. I managed to taper my way out slowly and recover.

Lifting filled the void and life vastly improved.

Stay on track brother

Congratulations man, keep on keeping on! Although you definitely forgot a no homo after the Dwayne Johnson part!

There are many of us here who have been down that path. Congrats on getting clean and being able to stay that way. Its hard I know. I spend a quite a bit of time in a methadone clinic every week talking to the new intakes and people who have bewn there a few weeks. The #1 piece of advice I give then and will to you is to build a routine and stick with it. Sounds like you are alreafy doing that so props for that. If your routine is getting up at 4 am to vet to the gym. Do it. That one day you decide to sleep in will be the day you fuck up.
Again, good job on getting clean. If you can do that you can do dam near anything so just stick with it!

I could recite that almost word for word because its so close to my life. Wont go.into it here but definitely been down those dark roads and fortunately found my way back. Wifey saved me from myself and my boys are 22, 18 and 12. The older 2 know whats what but the youngest has had me straight almost half his life so his memories are more of me clean. Someday when he is older I will talk to him. Im glad to hear you are doing well and that there are so many guys out there staying clean every day. It kills me to see this shit tear so many people down.
