Overhead exercises necessary ?
I am wondering if you guys think sit is possible to build and keep building shoulder muscles without using any overhead lifts? I ask because my left shoulder hurts very badly if I do any over head presses (or even bench pres sometimes if im not careful).
After a few sets of even very light weight when my shoulder muscles get a little pumped it feels like I am pinching a nerve. I dont remember a specific time when I injured the muscle.I have had this problem for about 1 1/2 years now. I have tried using very light weights to strengthen the area.I also have tried taking weeks off of any thing that would bother it but it has not seemed to help.
It is very frustrating because I have pretty much maxed out on lifts because of it.I just cant push hard enough to progress more.
I am able to do most other shoulder exercises just fine reverse flys, lateral raises, shrugs ect. Do you think if I stick to these types of lifts I can avoid doing anything over head and still make gains I would of otherwise?

Could be AC joint!!!
I had a very similar problem. Didn't train shoulders for a few months and the shoulder healed nicely over that time. Still have to warm shoulder a lot before training tho.
I had a similar problem a couple years ago. It made it almost impossible to get a good shoulder workout. What works for me is doing a little bit of cardio before lifting. I felt like it just got the blood flowing and got the shoulders warmed up nicely. Another option would be getting a deep tissue massage a couple times a month This can get kind of expensive but i think its worth it. I agree with everyone else on possibly getting it looked at by a doc. Better safe than sorry! Good luck.
1jakd_hipyAbsolutely, I don't touch over head exercises and have hit 435lbs @ 205lbs. Learning to bench properly will really take the strain off your shoulder and pec and put it more on your tri's and lats(yes I said lats.
i have had the same exact problem and i don't think it's uncommon. what helped me is being super focused on pressing my shoulder blades together on all reps (even the last ones when i am near failure). i can't tell you why it works but have heard this advice from several places and it helped me.
I think you should go see a dr. and get an x-ray. It cud be a partial tear in rotator, maybe a tendon is starting to detach, or it cud be nothing and you get some pain killers? There is only one way to know for sure what is goin on and that is to have it looked at... Cause when you're dealing w/ limited movement like that especially a shoulder, you are going to have limited gains. Sorry to say it bro. But if you go to the doc he may be able to fix ya up and you'll be able to those exercises again? You can always try acupuncture, I have read and heard very positive things if it is a nerve like you are guessing? I have never tried it though?
I think im gonna have to get it checked out soon. The reason I think its nerve because it seems to get worse the more pumped the muscle is.Afetr the pain starts it does not matter which position I have my arm in.I hurts for about a half hour after workout.
I never have any pain in my normal daily routine otherwise
could be a tendon injury and when getting a pump your putting pressure on it. like how doing bi before shoulders make you more susceptable to a shoulder injury because of the added pressure on the tendon (forgot the specific tendon name)
your probably right brother. Do you think if it was a tendon I would of felt it when it happened?
no not necessarily because I sprained and stretched the tendons in sternoclavicular joint which dislocated it a hair and I didn't feel it. It just came from over use.
Right where the rear and medial delts touch....is where my shoulder would burn like major pump. Went back to dumbells for chest presses and pain went away. Is it like that?
its more towards the front but seems to be deep inside my shoulder. The best way I can explain the pain would be like a pressure point.
skalpathose exercises will work but limits you. nothing beats good ol' military press.
Any possible way for doc to run some scans? Shoulders as you know limits all your bulk lifts.
Oh yeah I know:( it sucks bro ,very frustrating. I have not asked doc about it yet.I hoped it would go away on its own, but its not looking good.
But possibly it's something simple. Trim a bone spur or calcium deposit. Time, wear, and tear further builds scar tissue.
