Low Sodium for Lower blood pressure

ad

I got a my fitness pal app on my phone and started tracking my macros several months ago. I noticed my sodium was atleast 3000 mgs a day. I decided to cut back.
The first two weeks I kept it at 1000 mgs or under . The last month it’s been 1500 or under. It was a big adjustment at first but I’ve discovered many foods and several restaurants I can eat at no problem.
My blood pressure is now consistently around 127 over 72. That’s a 10 point drop. I am off cycle buts it’s significantly lower.
Little things like salted nuts and Propel drinks were a lot of the culprits. I’m also eating more chicken and less egg whites.

A high salt/ carb meal 3 to 4 hrs before a workout can make for a nasty pump providing you are hydrated.. just my 2 nickles.....

To offer an alternative to the accepted medical perspective regarding sodium and blood pressure - I recently read this article. Just putting it out there for discussion: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/317099.php

I can tell you first hand mine dropped significantly and pretty quick. Might be different for someone else but that’s my experience.

I believe you mate - as I said, I just posted an article for the sake of discussion - not argument.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Yes mate - it seems that way. I guess as medical research progresses some of the old 'truths' get questioned and disproved. It's probably a good idea to limit sodium intake due to possible water retention...but then again - where does sodium bicarbonate stand? It's 'sodium' but not guilty of all the alleged offences of sodium chloride - in fact sodium bicarbonate can be quite beneficial for kidney function. I just take it all with a pinch of salt.

yes .... limiting sodium intake too drastically produces other issues ... Moderation is everything and individual biochemistry is everything as well. I think the medical community has been brain washed into a one size fits everyone way of thinking and it is problematic. It keeps doctors from seeing the entire picture of the patient.

I have to watch my sodium. If I get to high I get a BP induced headache for troubles..

Fitness pal is a great app, myself and everyone around me seems to be using it.
Well done Sam with dropping sodium, I am stuggling with this, don’t enjoy any food without it.
Must be the case of getting used to it

I posted a no sodium bbq sauce recently. Harry and David sells a no sodium pineapple grilling sauce that’s also very good.

Would be handy as struggling

What's your water intake look like?

Sam I Am's picture

Quite a bit. That much sodium is bad news for a guy my age. Mayo Clinic was on the money with this. Didn’t take long for it to drop either.

I had the bright idea to add 32 ounces of roast beef speread out during the day . ( 4 8oz wraps in tortillas.) Did that for about 4 weeks and was about to pop. Retained water so bad when i pulled my socks off i could still tell what brand i was wearing. Not good too much salt.

Lunch meat is loaded with sodium.
