Group Training Conflict
Hey bros,
I'm looking for some advice and input on an issue I'm having with my training group. I moved a couple months ago and was invited to train with a closed group of pros. It's a huge opportunity and they have a private facility with the best equipment around. I was training with them until I ended up taking some time off due to extreme burn out. The problem is that I am on call 24/7 with my job. I work oilfield. And they train late evening. Often I'm not home until 10:30 or later, and not in bed until midnight. I am at the office 40 hours a week, and then often end up getting calls throughout the night. Literally, my phone has rung after a ME night, starting at 1 am and continued every 15-30 minutes until 6 am. Then I have to get up and get to the office by 8am. It's rough.
Our split is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. So if I don't get much sleep or any uninterrupted sleep after training hard both Monday and Tuesday nights, you can imagine my energy levels, focus, and recovery. This happened a lot, and I ended up just crashing and burning hard. I lost 70+ lb on my deadlift. I lost 15 lb body weight while eating well above my needed caloric intake, and I was on cycle! That's how strung out and over worked I was.
Anyway, I brought this all up to the owner of the facility to see if there is anyway I can train earlier, etc. I ended up being told that many people would kill for the opportunity, those that are there have made sacrifices, and if I want to train there I have to basically suck it up and make sacrifices also. My sacrifices being not getting quality rest, which in turn will sacrifice my well-being and risking my job because I can't function. That's from my perspective. I suggested possibly training elsewhere on the weekdays and there only on the weekends like a few others do, but I was told I had to be full-time, all in or not at all.
I guess I'm wondering is what you guys would do? Do you think I just need to suck it up and continue training there or move on so I can balance my work, training and life? Maybe you need more details, I don't know.
I'm personally beside myself with what to do. I have been out of the gym for three weeks now because I couldn't handle the stress and lack of sleep. I need to get back in the gym. I want to train with the best, but it's not doing me any good if I'm running myself into the ground to do it.
Thanks,

Yep. I went and got my shit from their gym, stayed cool, and walked out the bigger dude. It's all good. I don't need them.
I did a job for 5 years where I worked 70 hours, 6 days a week and it's bloody hard enough trying to get yourself to the gym let alone getting to eat and rest properly. I've packed it in now and my training has improved so much.
My advice is simple and you sound like you know what you should do anyway. If you can't get the right amount of rest in, you aren't going to grow no matter how good an opportunity this is. We all know, food / training / rest = results. Mess up on any of those and you're treading water.

Exactly! I don't even understand how the gym owner, who is at the top of his sport, doesn't understand that. Maybe it's because he doesn't work. He made some stupid-ass comment about me being worried about "missing a little sleep". I explained it's not a little sleep. Everyone knows that rest is an incredibly important element in recovery. Without it, you're going nowhere.
sgtstedankoFuck em. If you can't work, rest properly It's just not worth the hassle... Home gym, bubba
Yep, that's how I feel too. I think it's just like avocado13 said below, I already answered my question. I thought about it after, and I think I had already made my decision. The gym owner just solidified it for me. But in a rather douchey fashion. Unfortunately, I don't have room for a home gym, and I sold all of my equipment when I moved a couple months ago. I'm going to train at a Powerlifting gym I think and take up PLing. I was pursuing strongman, but I'm pretty much up shit creek for equipment now.
Well, I just got booted out of the group/gym. No idea. I guess having an inconvenient schedule that doesn't mesh with theirs is grounds for expulsion. Ghey.
Some times it's good to take a break. Yes you can get burn out! Try switching gym for a month or two? Seeing new faces will change your whole out look !!
I'm afraid that if I change gyms, I won't be allowed back where I'm at. I definitely need a change, however.
What's the point in training with the best if YOU cannot be your best? I think you answered your own question man.
That's a very valid point. You may be right.
