Good read.
I get most of my gains back after extended layoffs but as I get older it takes me longer to regain them.
I guess it is better than not gaining back anything.

A good question that has gone unanswered. It's arguable that any DNA change can be passed on to future generations (isn't that the fundamental premise of evolution?) . So, maybe your muscular development and muscle memory can also be passed on. This is interesting in that we now know that gene expression changes due to environmental stresses. Also that those expressions can be passed on to the next generation.

So if your father was Arnold, you would have wanted to be conceived in the 70s ;) not after.

Matt Brown was on Joe Rogan's podcast last week and he was talking about the very same thing. Specifically he mentioned, banning any fighters from UFC competition from the first moment they test positive because the effects on muscle memory are permanent like this article says.

That's an alluring article, thanks for posting it. Now I want to read more about. I remember an infomercial for a workout DVD when I was younger, that claimed to introduce "Muscle Confusion" as a way to build more muscle faster.

"If an elite athlete takes performance-enhancing drugs to put on muscle bulk, their muscle may retain a memory of this prior muscle growth. If the athlete is caught and given a ban -- it may be the case that short bans are not adequate, as they may continue to be at an advantage over their competitors because they have taken drugs earlier in life, despite not taking drugs anymore

It appears they're also making the claim that when an athlete gets a temporary ban for substance use, them having been at a higher muscle mass earlier from juice, will allow, and make it easier for them to rebound back to higher muscle composition, giving them an advantage.

Fibres that have acquired a higher number of myonuclei grow faster when subjected to overload exercise, thus the nuclei represent a functionally important 'memory' of previous strength. This memory might be very long lasting in humans, as myonuclei are stable for at least 15 years and might even be permanent. In addition, myonuclei are recruited during steroid use and encode a muscle memory, at least in rodents. Thus, extending the exclusion time for doping offenders should be considered.

Thanks again for posting that. This NCBI Article discusses 'muscle memory' as well as the increase in 'muscle memory' with AAS usage.

Study also proposes that anabolic steroids improve this muscle memory. Interesting read.
