+ 3 Feel the burn??
Busting ass in the gym does more than folks can imagine. Pushing your body past others around you or even your own imaginary limits can catapult you to the next level. The science is dry and boring but true champions will push to read and know there is no real limits other than those in your own mind. Overtraining is a bullcrap myth pushed so you keep on buying garbage suppliments and paying trainers. All the while youre making no real advances.
Push to your physical extremes is what separates dorian yates from the gym guru who still aint passed up 220lbs. Those extremes FORCE your body yo asapt and overcome. But if you cant hff andle the pain....you shold stick to knitting or badmitton.
Tired of arguing with youngsters....lol

The problem today is kids buy gear before a gym membership it’s crazy I think the media started that shit back when McGuire bonds and Sosa were breaking records they said the reason was steroids like them guys never hit a home run without them they made it sound like gear was some secret super power... I still can’t hit a home run wtf lol
RustyhookerOn point! Yup
AnonI don't believe in over-training. I do believe there is a wrong way to do some things, for example: if you have type 3 acromions (the most hooked out of the 3 types) then doing lifts that put your supraspinatus tendon in a pinch between the acromion and the head of the humerus can lead to shoulder impingement, shoulder bursitis, and rotator cuff tear. This is not over-training, it is training improperly. And I think too many people blame training related injuries on over-training because they don't know what they did wrong. I don't think over-training is a real problem, I think improper training is a real problem.
It's an ignorant blanket term. "I'm not making gains because I been over-training!" or "I got hurt training because I was over-training!"
Damn bro that was very well said, I think you deff knocked that one Out the Park.
Agreed; I think I have physically over trained one time in my life. Many days of mental/neurological exhaustion
Molinin302Gotta look at the science, absolutely a difference between working a muscle to exhaustion and overtraining. Overtraining triggers a natural response from the body, it's injury, and the body will respond accordingly. Stimulate, don't annihilate, a multiple time Olympia winner said that and he's still healthy. It's good advice. All I'm saying is I'd rather take advice from Lee Haney instead of some guy I've never met that has the conditioning of a waterbed. Do your own research. Don't be a waterbed.
+2
When I was 16 years old, I used to watch a show that was Lee Haney’s on ESPN on the pride of my life 13” color TV, that came on on Sunday nights at 1 am and lasted till 2 am about weight training. Not good for school Monday morning. Anyway, he would be doing 135 on bench grunting like it was a lot of weight, I was always like WTF watching him lift. Probably just didn’t want to mess up his regular workout I’d guess. I was watching another bodybuilding show where one of the guys was complaining how hard he had to work and all Lee had to do was touch a weight to grow and didn’t have to train nearly as hard as the rest of them. Just a complete genetic freak.
RustyhookerI met haney...thickest mass ive ever seen. And he lifted to failure just like dorian, ramey, etc etc
Molinin302Awesome! I met Levrone many years ago at a show he put on. Very humble and cool guy. Haney seems the same way. Training to failure is encouraged, always has been. Overtraining, which is a very real thing, is more in relation to recovery time. Letting the body recover and rebuild for the next punishment we put it through. It's basic physiology, I didn't know you were going for your PA Rusty, best wishes with that. You'll be an asset to whatever practicing physician you wind up working for. Good for you bro.
RustyhookerFunction and form. Well said
When I hear overtraining my mind goes straight to hard endurance type of work. The kind that fucks with cortisol also includes adrenal fatigue and electrolyte imbalance. Ive been there several times, its real.
RustyhookerIm here to push bodybuilding and gym rats to the next level. Ive never ever seen a long distance runner step into the npc and make their mark. Long term endurance creates the lactate and fatigue and oxygen debt. Your body adapts and becomes more efficient. If your body did not become more efficient then explsin the people globally that run several msrathons each year while most folks cant run to the mailbox.
Yes its real......and im sure you know how to overcome. Or really it comes down to picking a sport thats enjoyable. Ive yet to see anyone die by hard efforts.

I mean, this guy got pretty big right?
Phil Heath coming from college basketball is very similar too.
Molinin302http://www.npcoregon.com/feature_angelaleong.html
Evidently tennis as well. I had no idea. Amazing the new things I learn every day. Everyone winds up loving the weights, one of the most satisfying self improvement regimens out there.
AnonMy near future lol. I can tell you this brother, for some athletes getting too big too fast will absolutely hurt their game. It hits so hard...all of a sudden your feet hurt doing your running/endurance training and you're slower all around and get winded faster.
Molinin302I was a karate student when I was younger, competed but never had the skills to go further. It was something I really enjoyed though, I did. But yeah, again, the exercise and growing muscle caught my eye. Took 4th at a state tournament, full contact at black belt, but loved the weights. And it was in the time period when MMA started. Remember the old pay per view stuff? Lol. That's when I knew I couldn't go any further. 4th in a very small state, and get me on the ground I'm done. Zero grappling or wrestling skills or education. Weights it became. I don't regret my decision. I'm 45yo and bump into friends here and there and I get big eyes and compliments. I'm a humble guy, but its rewarding. Youre a solid guy Shred.
AnonI'm getting close to the big 4 0 and aged better than most my friends too haha cheers to chat bro!
but yes karate and Judo were more common in the US back then before BJJ took off.
I look forward to continuing to train too.
This calls for a quote,
"The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you’re a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs.
Friends may come and go. But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds." -Henry Rollins
This was very informative and interesting... I think we all perform to a point of lactate. But how can we utilize and manage it better for what we want. I tend to do alot of my anaerobic exercises after my heavy weightlifting.. Because of its growth hormone productivity side effect, maybe I should do these exercises after my warmup??? I've always heard hiit is better before workout, Liss is better post workout... Im an athlete, so most of the time I just follow what my body tells me it wants. But it's good to put science in place of the madness... Thanks brother, very interesting... I'd give ya 2 somehow.. +1
There is nothing like achieving lactic threshold while cycling. Especially when you given everything you've got to pull the peloton for a mile and then your pumping mush to try and stay in the draft when you fall to the back.
RustyhookerMuscle building burns carbs. Anaerobic burns fats.
So yes, anaerobic after muscle session and the carbs are smashed, forcing the body to switch fuels. Not simply because science says anaerobics burns fat but because the body would rather burn the easiest fuel available. If you hit more carbs post or intra workout then how long will your body burn cheap fuel before forced into high calorie fat burning? We used to call it priming the system. Good carbs preworkout. Anaerobics when leaning out. Whey post workout for faster blood rise in readily useable protein for recovery. And post workout if you pushed hard thst natural hgh spike to funnel nutrients into cells. Hitting carbs too soon post workout spikes natural indulin which will signal hgh to stop producing.
I’m going to play devil’s advocate here and say there is such a thing as over training, for me at least. When I worked a tough job there would be no way I would be able to hit the gym for 2 hours 6 days a week without making myself ill, I tried and became run down and hindered my gains and mental health. Kids, work and other life commitments come first and unfortunately I can’t eat, sleep, train and do nothing else.
Work smart not harder, utilise progressive overload, intensity, different sets, programs etc. Now I’ll work out 5 days a week for an hour max and I’m in the best condition I’ve ever been in both in and out of the gym. I can put 100% into the hour, if it goes over I start to loose intensity, get sloppy and it becomes counterproductive.
I’ll also mention once you get to a certain level a trainer is without a doubt the most anabolic compound you can add to your stack, I’d pay huge money to train in real life with a few members on here. I was lucky enough for Dacky to coach me daily with 6+ weeks and it blow my physique up to an extent I’m still riding that wave now nearly 2 year on.
What I’m putting down is for the every day man like myself who wants to add quality size, with day to day limitations there are variables which your scientific studies don’t cater for.
AnonThat sounds like exertion induced chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), brother. There are multiple causes of CFS. Training hard while not getting enough sleep, not enough food, too much mental and physical stress...that can run you down.
Certainly reads like that mate but I’m to thick to understand stuff like so I don’t label it. Life can be tough from time to time, as we all know too well! One thing is for sure, children throw a spanner in the works and life gets serious very quickly.
RustyhookerScience will never cater. But science does prove the dorians out there are going to always surpass the rest of the gym folks.
Life with kids too is a limiting factor but thats more of a time constraint. Worth it in the long run for certain. The world needs its proud poppas
For sure on that last part 100...Treads such as this one is what makes this community so great, so much knowledge in this little space..
Well said bro!
If you’re on steroids and eating enough I truly believe over training is impossible, assuming you sleep like a normal person
RustyhookerSpeeds up healing for sure. Not many get to that hard physical and mental push it seems.
What an absolute load of Rubbish - of course overtraining is possible even when on a tonne of gear. Come and train with me for 3 hours a time so that next day you can't pull your socks on because your back and CNS is so smashed in then tell me its not possible. The only reason you might be able to train all week is if you do these ponsey 1 hour training sessions consisting of bicep curls and tricep pushdowns.
I feel personally attacked
Molinin302Lol, I felt the same thing
Your arms look good though.
I agree! He's doing something right.
Molinin302It's genetics bro, we all work hard. The arms run in the family.
Molinin302Lol, thanks man. It's my back that suffers from them though, arms always want to take over.
Look at my physique brother, I train everything. I subscribe to the maximum effort per set over volume, Dusty Hanshaw is a good example of what I try to do. You can train your 3 hours. Also I guess I should specify that if someone were to train 3 hours a day, 7 days a week, they’d eventually breakdown, but I assume people aren’t that hardheaded. I do 5 days 2 rest days because it fits my work schedule. All I’m trying to say is that within a regular split schedule and workout time you probably can’t truly over train
Yes I've seen your physique from your many uploads and I wouldn't say its anything to get overly excited about, to me it just resembles someone who has been training fairly consistently for a few years. I don't see anything in the way of thickness which I am sure you would be able to generate much more of if you rested more and trained better.
Okay press, give me 2 years, I’ll hit you back up.
RustyhookerHow many folks even try to do as youre describing? That type of workout will build you past the plateaus but the magic pill is the new belief unfortunatly
Great read rusty. Thanks for sharing and putting this together. Pretty damn interesting +
RustyhookerPlateau busting 101. Everyone preaches to change workouts bout every 6 weeks to shock system into new growth. That new workout brings new soreness which came from lactate. And new growth follows.
Personally ive gotten faster recovery post workout with sauna and/or spa soak. Heat keeping vessels dialated to push new blood thru the fatigued muscles. Whey post workout as we ride that natural hgh spike. Meal bought 30mins past the whey. Every body differs which pushes self discovery too on recovery methods. Keeps up learning!
Great topic!! I think overtraining is possible but most people will never know what that is myself included not saying we can’t have a balls out workout but to consistently train like Dorian or Ronnie prolly isn’t going to happen the body has mechanisms in place to avoid overtraining. Ronnie and Dorian were brutal but who knows if they dialed it back they could’ve looked just as good we’ll never know they’re genetics were amazing. Look at jay he didn’t train insane but had just as much size I think it’s all preference
RustyhookerGenetics and focus makes an unstoppable person. I like watching guy sisternino lift. Old school sets to failure.
Yea and branch trained hardcore too but they didn’t have quite the genetics of Ronnie or Dorian. My favorite physique was levrone he was a heavy lifter too but for only 4-5 months a year it worked for him but prolly not for most
