Have you ever given someone advice in the gym there and then?
I've been working out for a while. Definitely not an expert, and still have a lot to learn. But enough to know the basics to a reasonable degree. How to loosely structure a program, maintain form etc.
There's a guy I see in my gym all the time. Older, maybe mid 70's. He's working hard every time I see him. Really respect the fact he's even there at all, I hope I am too at his age. But there's no avoiding that he doing every movement objectively - and egregiously - wrong. Too much weight. Swinging it around. Quarter reps. Setting up a machine in a way that his clearly crushing his joints. You name it, he's doing it. So badly in fact that it wouldn't be a stretch to say he's wasting his time.
I've never been inclined to offer advice to anyone in the gym before, In general because 1) I have no idea what someone is trying to achieve, maybe they're rehabbing from an injury I don't know about etc, and 2) everyone is still learning to some degree, including me. Only time I'd intervene is if I saw someone doing something likely to injure someone else. Having said that, when I first started working out a guy saw me doing rack pulls and came over to give me advice. I still remember what he told me and appreciating it.
But man, I feel so bad for this guy. He's clearly in need of some help. Anyone help others in the gym, or is it better to ignore and let them get on with it?
