Ammonia post workout??
ad
So I get done with my workout and the smell of ammonia fills my nose. This happens after pretty much every workout. Anyone experienced this or know what might be the cause?
I'm currently cutting hard on a no carb diet (keto). Also my workouts are very intense, even more so than usual (thanks to a lil PEDs). This is quite scary 'coz ammonia means nitrogen and nitrogen means protein. Does this mean I'm burning protein as energy??

Any other symptoms? Maybe the attendant, just cleaned the bathroom or something. No but really any other symptoms?
Lol the smell is like coming from inside, no matter where I am and lasts for about 30-60min. I'm guessing you do mma, I remember when I used to do it I used to get the same smell after the more intense drills...
Read this bro http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/ammonia.htm
This should help!!
Thanks bro, from the article I think the problem is holding the intensity for too long.
This is not where you want to be, bro. It does call into question the quality an level of your ketosis.
It does mean you are burning some protein for energy and I experience this also after a heavy workout BEFORE MY BODY BECOMES FULLY FAT ADAPTED. Once the conversion from glycolysis to ketosis is complete you will not notice this as much as your body will be burning ketones for energy, not ptotein. Your glycogen stores will be empty and the trace amount of carbs you are consuming is not relevant. When there is a carb deficit and the body is not in full ketosis, the breakdown of muscle tissue from intense lifting causes ammonia levels in your muscles to rise. Your blood carries the ammonia to your respiratory system. That is what you are smelling.
Forget anything u read. It takes about a month for the body to become accustomed to burning fat for fuel (dietary fat and body fat - which is what u want). Your strength will go down significantly and then rise again when the process is complete. If you haven't noticed a significant decrease in strength yet - your not in full ketosis.
The keostix you piss on to measure your level of ketosis are helpful, but they are not the best measure. Buy a ketone meter. The link below is not the "gold standard" link on this topic - I just picked one that's reasonable on a google search because I don't want to type out a novel here. (Sorry for being a bit lazy).

Don't worry about the protein recommendation in the above link, but realize that too much protein can prevent u from entering ketosis and pull u out of ketosis. If u get a lot of responses here that shows the community is interested in this, leave this in the open forum, otherwise please FR me and we can talk all u want about ketogenic diets. There isn't any way better to burn fat and keep muscle.
Gearhead,
I fat fingered the thumbs down button on accident so i hit it again and it says zero..let me know if it impacted your karma...sorry bro wasnt intentional.
Big13
Looks like it shaved a point somehow. Don't sweat it bro, I'll live! But u know what - I think it is so friendly and respectful for u to even ask you can have a bump on me. There's some goon out there negging folk at the moment - I hope the mods catch up with the guy.
Thanks bro...i gave it back you deserve your karma..i cant wait till they troll tag that jackass:)
I'm over a month into it at 10g carbs a day. Originally I was doing DP keto but decided to drop some protein and up the fats toward a more standard keto. I know I'm in full ketosis not only from the ketostix but also coz I have zero cravings for carbs anymore. Gonna look into getting a ketone meter.
I didn't experience any drop in strength, in fact I'm benching 4 plates for 8 now from 3.5 for 8 at the beginning. Which can only be attributed to the liquid gold I'm on. But I did lose a lot of stamina, can't do as many sets but I'm really pushing myself to keep the volume high.
Oh and I've dropped about 7-8% bodyfat so far which is amazing. I'm at about 10-11% but the goal is 6%. Only have 4 weeks to do it so I feel I need to step it up somehow but I'm already hitting weights hard 4x a week, cardio 45min 7x a week and 1000kcal deficit.
Do you think I should add preworkout carbs as outlined by Lyle McDonald (CKD) so that I can keep the intensity in the gym high and also to avoid crashing my thyroid?
Btw it's nice to hear from you again. Don't know if you remember me but you're the guy that pointed me in this direction!
Bro, I'm so happy the keto diet is working for you. There are some with certain medical issues that are ill advised to put their body into ketosis, but for most of us, it's fine, even healthy. Many folks just can't make it past the discomfort of the induction phase of the diet and quit before the rewards kick in.
No carbs for you bro! No CKD!
Not with the aggressive goal of hitting 6% 4 weeks out. When u get a chance PM me about this, I have a couple of questions for u. I just want to do a little calculus to make sure u can get to 6% in that time frame and whether u might have to alter the caloric deficit. This is the only pre comp diet I have ever used and it has never failed.
No drop in strength is impressive, bro. Test/Tren/Mast? The standard? You will be 24 in May according to my review of our database. I remember reviewing some of your proposed cycles and at your age advising you against Tren so early in your AAS career but I learned around here at least where Tren seems to be concerned my success rate in talking young men out of it isn't stellar. I'm asking this because u mentioned crashing your thyroid. While there is a school of thought that a lack of glucose can interfere with the conversion of T4 to T3, there are not many studies that support that assertion. But, and however, our most darling of hormones, trenbolone is masterful at dropping T3. How are your latest labs looking?
If you're not using Tren, I wouldn't expect any thyroid problems from the diet alone. Is your hair falling out? Do your arms and legs feel, well, cold? I'm not gonna run down the list of hypothyroid symptoms, u can look em up. Also, if u had more time, u could move to CKD but you're pulling yourself in and out of ketosis when u do it and while u don't go through a full tilt re-induction to get back into ketosis it will delay the fat loss. It's been a while since I've read McDonald - does he claim you can introduce just enough carbs before intense exercise that it does not disturb your ketosis? I don't do CKD, I'm the grin an bear it type.
Rather than carbs, if u really start to feel drained in the last few weeks, I would suggest Test Suspension - water base 30 min. before u work out on leg and back days. On days your training smaller muscle groups I wouldn't use it, don't get carried away and let it become a crutch. If u have never tried it, u will fall in love with it. Pure test, no ester. The ultimate pre workout supplement! I prefer the aqueous suspension to oil based TNE. BTW, that ammonia smell is from a little tissue breakdown. 405 on the bench is an off-season mass gaining weight (it is for me anyways, I'm no power lifter, that's for sure). You seem to train the way I do when on a cut - I don't lighten up and move to higher reps - I think it adversely impacts the look of density when you train that way - you can keep the muscles full and pumped on the drop sets.
The article LevelEmOut suggested is a good read also bro on your ammonia issue. Also, bro, when u get a chance could you please put your stats in your profile so folk like me don't have to go scouring the database looking for them. This is an AAS website and well that's what I like to talk about on here, but the mod team has real strong views on giving steroid advice to the young.
I'm not shouting at ya, bro. It's just in bold not bold and red.
Kindest,
GearHead
I'm actually feeling great on keto, which is very strange for a cut. No cravings, hardly even feel hungry. The induction phase was a damn nightmare though, the first week I was craving carbs so bad but after that it's was all smooth sailing.
4 weeks more without carbs, no problem. Only thing that gets to me without carbs is the flatness.
Cycle wise, the original plan was to do tren a 50mg ED with a replacement dose of test p, no mast. What I am doing is tren only and pinning 100iu hcg every morning to provide the test and 0.75mg caber PW, which seems to be working good. Only had minimal shrinkage and libido is crazy high (more than my test only!) but I have the test p on hand in case.
I know it seems I'm jumping the gun, but only tren has the power to maintain my lbm the way I'm pushing myself for this 8-9 weeks. I haven't had a single bad side so far. No insomnia, no night sweats (well there isn't any carbs in me for that), a little more angry but I save that for the weights, no hair loss, no acne, no loss of cardio and no pressure issues (I check a few times per week).
Just high motivation and strength in the gym and some really entertaining dreams!
I don't have any hypothyroid symptoms, body temperture is roughly the same. Since my area does have private labs I go to my doc for blood work but only pre and post cycle, don't want to risk my insurance going while on. Lyle says you should have 5g carb per 2 set of weight lifting 30min preworkout. Apparently it only takes you out of ketosis during the workout.
The test sus sure sounds tempting, but I'm gonna save it for another cycle. I'm already pushing it gear wise. I pyramid the weight down for each set, 405 being my 8RM the next set will be lighter for another 8 reps and so on. So I do get a good pump with all the drop sets. Way I see it is that's the way I built the muscle so it's gonna be the way I keep it.
As for the ammonia issue, I think if I shorten the workouts to 60min from 90min and add a fifth workout session to cover up it may help.
Bro, bro, bro - whoever gave u the idea that HCG which mimics LH is gonna get u to produce enough natural test to provide an adequate base when u are on Tren. I'm not saying it won't but I would not rely on just how you feel. I would want the numbers. You're running a Tren only cycle. I would also like to see your E2 as well. If your test and E2 levels are fine, forge on bro. While Tren only cycles work, what u have given up is adding any mass on a cut. If that doesn't bother you, all is well. But, please order blood work. You say you have private labs in your are, so don't wait any longer. Check.

You order the female hormone panel and check the male gender box on checkout. This saves a boat load of money.
That was a typo, I meant I didn't have any labs in my area. If my test/e2 was off I'd have tren dick but anyway I was just doing an experiment so I'll just start test p with my next pin.
Good bro. +1 Let the old ones here do the experiments, and write articles on the outcomes. How far away is the nearest Labcorp or Quest Diagnostics?
