Just curious if anyone here hunts. Or am I the only one from September to January who lives in the woods when I’m not working or hitting the gym?

I deer hunt, but for the past couple years my little girl has been the one killing them. Much more fun that way. I wish I could post a pic of the one she got last year but I think i need more karma.
Try to when I can, time is kinda tight lately.

Me and my wife both hunt. Rifle, archery, shotgun, handgun, big game, small game, birds….anything we can.
September is our pilgrimage for elk and we are both stoked. She got the super rare tag this year. I got it last year. We’re headed up to do some scouting this weekend.

I guess I shouldn’t ask if anyone forages when they’re in the woods. Probably gonna get shit for not shopping for produce at the grocery store. Ramps, morels, berries, wild asparagus, chicken of the woods, and damn near anything else edible I come across.
If there were woods here that'd be something Id like to learn. Just identifying whats what in the mushroom world. I do have blackberry an blueberry on my property, but I wouldnt call right outside my back door foraging lol
I'm all about the shrooms of all sorts. I forge Chanterelles, Morels, Oyster, Lobster, Chicken of the Woods, Cauliflower, coral, lions Mane...
Wild on my property, Blackberry, Huckleberry, Raspberry, Salmon berry, Oregon Grape, Blueberry...
I of course humanly harvest them.
There was this one occasion when a black bear and her cubs showed up. I did a catch and release of my berries that day.
A lesser man would have released more than berries. Morels should be plentiful considering the amount of wildfires.

My wilderness skills and bushcraft game is pretty tight. Haven't hunted for meat in years I buy a cow every year now. I do spend a lot of time out in the woods but I prefer to fish and trap when I do that because the gear is way smaller and lighter. I think I may have to go this year this has made me crave fresh backstrap and there only one way to get that.
Used to go out every deer season, but now Im too busy with business, and slaughter a steer every year. A 900lb (hung) Brahmvee feeds me, my wife and dogs for almost a whole year. Its crazy had no remorse shredding "terrorists" with a .50 cal, but feel sadness every year when those big guys get put down. They live good though, free to roam and plenty of good food.
We slaughter 2 every year. I finish mine out on corn and just enough hay to keep the rumination going. Feeds my 6 plus my parents for a year.
You guys eat venison multiple days week? I can eat it made one day a week, other days I have to mix it with fatty beef. Its just not that good hahahah

I’ll trade beef for a good backstrap from time to time from my buddies who still hunt. I agree beef tastes way better, but 50/50 venison ground is pretty damn good.
I typically eat venison 3-4 times a week.

There is a episode of a old Canadian comedy called The Red Green show were they raised a cow and couldn't bring themselves to slaughter it.
Have to separate the livestock from the pets. I love all animals, but we gotta eat. Rule #1 above all else, do not name them. Once you name them, they are pets.
I always name them food names it seems to help the kids.
I tried that, easier than calling them by ear tag. But my wife gets upset. Shes a bit more sensitive to the process LOL

I kill a bunch of chickens every year like a whole flock never thought twice about it. I named my pigs both times I raised them bacon ham and sausage were all delicious and the next year they were named breakfast lunch and dinner. I get pretty attached to my laying hens though names favorites all the feelings crap.

Isn’t really anything there on a deer like there is on a cow or pig. Almost all bone and cartilage. The only thing from the head I typically use is the brain if I’m naturally tanning the hide and the tongue, but my dog always manages to steal it from me. If he doesn’t, that goes to tacos.

CWD was first discovered in the 1960’s. There have been ZERO cases of it jumping to humans.

Native Americans have stories of deer faring strange and wasting away for 100s of years. That prion has probably been here since the ice age.
I wasn't familiar with CWD, I know CJD which is caused by prions In cows, (Mad cow disease). For that, the risk is super low in a developed country, different stories with wild animals.
The brain is used for the tanning process when doing it naturally. Not for eating.... Tongue, Liver, heart, etc is all fine to eat, though.

Deer overpopulation is a real concern in the US, especially the Midwest. They cause hundreds of accidents each year, and overpopulation spreads CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease - its a brain prion that makes the deer stop eating, they essentially starve to death). When the populations are under control, its mitigates the spread.
The problem is they have no predators, except for bobcats who kill fawn. Inn the northern parts of the US, the wolves have decimated the deer population. After all the deer are killed off, the wolves move to livestock. You cant have wolves killing people's lively hood.
Being a hunter is actually being a conservationist. All these people who want to "save the mountain lion, or the wolf packs" are actually destroying the eco system. Keeping the deer pupation in check, as well as other animals, allows the natural environment to thrive.
Hunters are technically more "hippy" (in terms of helping the environment) then actual hippies.
My problem isn't really with the land owners who do what they have to do to keep the numbers in check, those who eat it or to keep these diseases down (I didn't realise about that btw) - my issue is with people who seem to get real kicks out of using guns to kill the animals and get a rush out of stalking and hunting it down. There are definitely those kind of people lurking amongst these pages, I find those people almost sadistic and I'm pretty sure they are pieces of shit in real life too. I can tell from the responses on here who the cunts are and who are the land owners keeping things in check and being civilised about it. Anyway, what do my thoughts matter - you will never get through to someone with the mentality of an evil cunt.

Take pride? For sure. Hunted 30+ years and largest rack I’ve ever seen in person, and might be largest I ever do see. A lot of hard work has gone into maintaining the habitat for the deer herd on my property.
Truly saddened? Not exactly saddened, but definitely reverence and appreciation for an animal providing sustenance for my family.
Hunting and fishing is just a way of life in rural America. Deer overpopulation is a real thing and is a danger to motor vehicles. People who kill animals and leave the carcasses to rot are scum. People who ethically hunt and eat all animals taken are part of the circle of life.
Deer overpopulation is definitely a major concern.... especially when they are spreading CWD and its wipes out a whole generation of good deer.
The real sick fucks are the DNR/game wardens that kill THOUSANDS of deer in the name of “stopping the spread of CWD”. In 1 state I hunt the DNR slaughtered the deer at night and put them in a mass grave. The hunters protested and finally this year the DNR has “suspended” this killing of hundreds and hundreds of deer…over bait piles, at night.
And ironically the bait piles ar the reason CWD spreads
