Just curious if anyone here hunts. Or am I the only one from September to January who lives in the woods when I’m not working or hitting the gym?

Me and my wife both hunt. Rifle, archery, shotgun, handgun, big game, small game, birds….anything we can.
September is our pilgrimage for elk and we are both stoked. She got the super rare tag this year. I got it last year. We’re headed up to do some scouting this weekend.

I guess I shouldn’t ask if anyone forages when they’re in the woods. Probably gonna get shit for not shopping for produce at the grocery store. Ramps, morels, berries, wild asparagus, chicken of the woods, and damn near anything else edible I come across.
If there were woods here that'd be something Id like to learn. Just identifying whats what in the mushroom world. I do have blackberry an blueberry on my property, but I wouldnt call right outside my back door foraging lol
I'm all about the shrooms of all sorts. I forge Chanterelles, Morels, Oyster, Lobster, Chicken of the Woods, Cauliflower, coral, lions Mane...
Wild on my property, Blackberry, Huckleberry, Raspberry, Salmon berry, Oregon Grape, Blueberry...
I of course humanly harvest them.
There was this one occasion when a black bear and her cubs showed up. I did a catch and release of my berries that day.

My wilderness skills and bushcraft game is pretty tight. Haven't hunted for meat in years I buy a cow every year now. I do spend a lot of time out in the woods but I prefer to fish and trap when I do that because the gear is way smaller and lighter. I think I may have to go this year this has made me crave fresh backstrap and there only one way to get that.
Used to go out every deer season, but now Im too busy with business, and slaughter a steer every year. A 900lb (hung) Brahmvee feeds me, my wife and dogs for almost a whole year. Its crazy had no remorse shredding "terrorists" with a .50 cal, but feel sadness every year when those big guys get put down. They live good though, free to roam and plenty of good food.
We slaughter 2 every year. I finish mine out on corn and just enough hay to keep the rumination going. Feeds my 6 plus my parents for a year.
Never had sympathy for those fucks. Fuckem all.
There is a episode of a old Canadian comedy called The Red Green show were they raised a cow and couldn't bring themselves to slaughter it.
Have to separate the livestock from the pets. I love all animals, but we gotta eat. Rule #1 above all else, do not name them. Once you name them, they are pets.
I always name them food names it seems to help the kids.
I tried that, easier than calling them by ear tag. But my wife gets upset. Shes a bit more sensitive to the process LOL

I kill a bunch of chickens every year like a whole flock never thought twice about it. I named my pigs both times I raised them bacon ham and sausage were all delicious and the next year they were named breakfast lunch and dinner. I get pretty attached to my laying hens though names favorites all the feelings crap.

Bro, that's a huge waste of the face meat, the meat on the face is some of the best. Not sure about venison, but on other animals it is.
Isn’t really anything there on a deer like there is on a cow or pig. Almost all bone and cartilage. The only thing from the head I typically use is the brain if I’m naturally tanning the hide and the tongue, but my dog always manages to steal it from me. If he doesn’t, that goes to tacos.

Take pride? For sure. Hunted 30+ years and largest rack I’ve ever seen in person, and might be largest I ever do see. A lot of hard work has gone into maintaining the habitat for the deer herd on my property.
Truly saddened? Not exactly saddened, but definitely reverence and appreciation for an animal providing sustenance for my family.
Hunting and fishing is just a way of life in rural America. Deer overpopulation is a real thing and is a danger to motor vehicles. People who kill animals and leave the carcasses to rot are scum. People who ethically hunt and eat all animals taken are part of the circle of life.
I mean, it’s better than hanging the plastic wrapper from your grocery store chicken on the wall.

I hunt and fish damn near all year birds, ducks, deer, small game doesn't really matter. My boys and I live on the water or in the woods.
Yup! Bird hunter and eat everything i shoot. There's recird sized big game here but I'm just too lazy to drag and butcher. The local places you can buy butchered beef...elk..bison...deer...hog...etc etc. Small game is just easier imo.
I grew up in moose country with them nobody is impressed you shot it. Getting it out of the woods on to your plate is the hard part with them.
I put in for moose in 4 states every year. Have yet to draw, but racking up those preference points.
Did you try NH? They came pretty easy there when I was there. That was a long time ago though.

I've heard the meat is excellent!! Fill 2 fridges for sure!! Love elk and ate a lot of deer etc. Gotta try moose some day
It kinda depends on what they have been eating but that is all about where you choose to hunt them.
Our here the deer have thousands of acres of corn. Maybe i just need to try bigger game again
Lived a better life than any farm animal and died faster and more humanely than any farm raised chicken, cow, or pig. Plus I don’t really like fatty cuts of meat so deer and elk are perfect for my diet. Sadly I can’t kill enough per season to make it my sole meat source…
I need 3/year to last me and the wife. It’s not our sole source of protein, but it’s durn near. Only got 2 last year and the freezers been empty a couple months now. Ready for bow season to kick off!

We had to stop eating pork in my house after my wife watched some video of industrial scale farm raised pigs for slaughter. Industrial farming, while necessary to feed the population, is what is truly evil to animals.
Pig farms like that are evil to way more then just the pigs it rains shit in the town the farms are in amongst other horrible stuff
Had an emergency response back during Hurricane Mathew that happened to be right next to a pig farm. I will never forget that smell. Nor do I know how any of those people could live there. No way olfactory fatigue blocks that scent
I responded to a event at a dairy farm where we pulled a guy with a broken hip out of Olympic size pool vat of cow shit. It was like a cut scene from a saw movie.
I did some welding at a pig farm for slaughter. They're in spaces so small they have inches to move in any direction. When their food came, every pig screamed . Im pretty confident they're insane. The Piglets that dont grow to a certain size in a certain time frame are killed by someone grabbing the hind legs and slamming their heads against the floor...truly made me consider becoming a vegetarian.
Best protein source there is! Our state basically gives us unlimited doe tags, and a season from Sept to April.
April?! Goddamn. I’d be able to get my necessary amount with that kind of window. I just grind the entire thing. Mostly plain ground and about 1/4 as breakfast sausage. Deer sausage, even with fat added, is still leaner than that shitty jimmy dean at the store. My wife loves sausage, egg, cheese biscuits in the morning with that breakfast sausage
