Brutal knee pain, but only in sleep/rarely
Has anyone else had any experience with this? I have been browsing through yahoo for answers and it seems to be pretty vague? I have had this happen about 4-5 times in the past year or less, and last night it happened again. I woke up in the middle of the night with excruciating pain in my right knee. I was sleeping on my side, as I was each other time this happened. I feel like I can't even MOVE my knee, almost like there is a nail going in straight through the side of the knee and into my bed, and even the SLIGHTEST movement is unbearably painful! I really have no clue what causes this, but I can say a few things:
1-it seems to be random, last night was the first night in a couple of months that this happened
2-after the knee "unlocks", there is NO residual pain, nor was there any pain in the knee today at work (I do a physical job so this is a good test)
3-I fractured the knee cap in this same knee about 10 years ago in a motorcycle accident, HOWEVER I have never noticed any pain in the knee. I have full range of motion, leg day doesn't complicate this or anything of that nature
If anyone has any kind of similar experience with this, please leave some feedback, I plan on going to see a dr. about this, but seeing as to how it is so far between episodes and it doesn't leave me with any pain after the fact, I have a hard time justifying seeing a Dr. for this, being if it was anything serious, and completely outside the lines of a worker's comp case, I couldn't miss an extended period of work (if that was needed), being I have a wife and 2 kids to take care of.
Thanks

The locking you describe I'd similar to pinching a torn meniscus. Being there was trauma to it in the past it could be arthritis flaring up but that seems unlikely since there is no residual pain
That's basically what I keep reading. I'm just wondering how bad a meniscus really is, if that is what the problem is, being its a rare occurrence that it bothers me? I have seen some forums (medical forums) saying osteoarthritis but like you said and like I said, there is no long withstanding pain. Thanks for the feedback, I think ill get it looked at when I get a chance, I hear the downtime for a meniscus isn't too bad where it would scare me off of checking into it
When I tore my meniscus it would click when I walked. Not really any pain associated with this but when it caught. Oh shit the pain. Depending on the size of the tear you could be walking in three days or non weight bearing for six weeks. The only way to tell if the meniscus is tore is with a mri. Good luck.
Thanks man that's good to know. I get clicking and popping on occasion, but no pain, until it locks. I did a heavy (for me) leg day last night and I feel perfectly fine today, but I will still see a dr to see if there is any cause for concern.
Most orthopods can tell if you have a meniscus problem with a few manipulations. It's worth a look.
That's a good point. I hurt my shoulder last year and after folding me like he was practicing jui jitsu on me, 3 seconds later he had a prognosis and everything. Either Drs. know their shit or they just guess like the weatherman lol
If they see a problem, then they can order an MRI or the like.
I've had similar issues and I'm glad I got them checked out and resolved. Good luck.
Thanks brother, appreciate the input!
