+ 2 What would you consider a "big squat weight"

ad

I don't pay much attention to what others lift these days. I've always been a strong squatter so this morning I entered a local competition. Basically full of power lifters rather than body builders so I expected to get pummelled to be honest. Ironically I won the thing and rather easily too. I'm quite shocked.

What's a big squat to you?

Theres a group of about 8 local powerlifters that do squats every sunday. Not sure if they compete, or are just a group of meatheads. Entertaining listening to 7 dudes hollering at 1 doing the set. Ive seen em go as big as 6 wheels or so. Their depth is good though and thats what makes the squat impressive. Average Joes however, Id consider 5 wheels at parallel impressive.

I've squatted 600 Leg press 1300+ I'm currently 205

See that's the type of weight I was thinking. At your weight, 600lbs is a good squat. At mine I really don't think that's a big deal. I was suprised to see a number of 250lbs maxing out around 220-240kg.

My biggest squat was 315 by 4 reps. Too scared to go heavier since I don't have a workout partner. Congrats on the win dude

Well done bro. 280 kg is great especially for someone who isn't a power lifter. I haven't tried for big numbers in years, it seems like I always end up getting hurt when I do. I'm a big pussy. I'll usually hit big numbers on the leg press machine but the squat rack...I haven't put on more than 405 in a long time.
All it takes is just a slight tweak in my already shitty form and I'm hurt. Lol
+2 for stepping out of the box and and grabbing the alpha tag at your gym. I think that's awesome.
Bro I totally want to come to your gym and lift with you one of these days.

Mate you'd always be welcome here.

Maybe I'll hit you up next time I hop the pond. Smile

Congrats on the win! Haven't gone heavy in many years now but my best was 650lbs for 4 reps at a body weight of 210ish. Now I stay 315 or under.

In terms of normal training to build muscle, I rarely squat heavy, it's less effective for me than putting up light weight and big volume of reps. The only exception is the leg press where I go heavy all the time.

225 for 20 reps with 6sec negatives is a big squat for me. You guys are way out of my league. No way I could even do a half squat with what you guys are doing.
Congrats on taking the title!

My biggest squat was 600 and the recovery was brutal; my knees need wraps now for when I squat or deadlift. One of the advantages of being short is my small bones wrapped in some dense muscle. Those days are over now as I make the switch from Powerlifter to body builder. That road is going to be brutal but it starts in another month. I have to enjoy watching the guys in the gym eyes pop out of their heads when they see the stacks I lift. My age has caught up to me and my tendons just won't keep up any more.

Congratulations. 2 x body weight is my mark. Bad back and knee have limited my squats and that I have to borrow a belt to lift anymore and the only guys at my gym who use belts wear them as girdles. I guess they weren't satisfied with six pack abs so they opted for a keg.

I think you had the advantage Catalyst, you've been isolated to doing legs for a long time now, poor chaps didn't know what hit them. That's an impressive amount of weight for a non powerlifter, I bet you suprised yourself somewhat as well.

Just above that mark then at 280lbs with a 280kg squat. Can do a little more but no need to this time.

I don't do any heavy deadlifting, ruptured 3 discs in my late twenties so not a good plan.....

Catalyst's picture

Bizarre isn't it? Squatting rarely causes me problems but even a 200kg deadlift can give me some major sciatic pain.

5 plates. When the bar starts bending back and forth as you stabilize the weight, then you know your moving some heavy weight imo.

Catalyst's picture

I underestimated clearly. 280kg, so 6 1/2 plates per side I won with. 2nd was 260kg. Most of these guys were 250lbs +.
