+ 2 DNP Tragedy at my gym

ad

Before I start I want to be clear I'm not "hating on DNP". There seems to be a pro and anti faction regarding this drug, and I make no attempt to hide the fact that I'm in the latter category. That being said, this is about personal experience for you guys to digest and make your own minds up. If you have as many factual pieces of information, you're better prepared, right?

Just got out of the gym. I've trained in the same place for years, know most of the regulars pretty well. There was a funny atmosphere this morning, I couldn't put my finger on why. They half way through my quad workout, I noticed something on one of the noticeboards - "RIP Ben XXXXXXXX, funeral Wednesday 22nd at XXXXXXXXX". This is a guy I knew fairly well, 28 years old, 2 young kids, I used to help him with his training routine when he was 23-24. I also know his brother, so I went out to the car and rang him and pass on my best wishes etc.

He had a heart attack on new years eve, died soon after reaching hospital. 28 years old, ex military, in great shape, WTF? Then I recalled having a fairly blunt conversation with him September / October about using DNP to get stage ready. He approached me about it and I told him to forget it, words to the effect of I wouldn't put it in my body if you paid me to. He was always a little hot headed, told me it was fine I was an old fart that wanted to do it the hard way etc. "Times have changed" I specifically remember him saying. I didn't push it too far, he knows what I do for a living so I hoped my profession would sway his judgement.

I haven't seen him since a couple of weeks before Christmas, but from asking around he was running DNP between Christmas and new year. Sweating profusely, dropping weight etc. His brother confirmed it, even told me who he got it from.

First time something like this has affected me directly. He was a nice lad, leaves behind a wife and two children under the age of 4. What a sad situation. What a waste. I know not everyone that takes DNP is going to keel over, but it happens, its real FFS, I've seen this lad 2 or 3 times per week for 6 or 7 years. I ask you to consider this if you're thinking about running DNP. You could be "Ben"

RIP mate, you'll be missed.

wow, only 28 and died of a heart attack? that is too bad man, whether or not the DNP was the cause of death he was too young. RIP ben

My condolences to Ben's family and friends. The optimism bias can sometimes be stronger than good judgement. Hopefully, this plague of a product will move through quickly.

Shame this.... but they are eating DNP over here like candy from the free shop.... males and females think they have found the next big thing and pop em without any research whatsoever.

Did you see that docu last night on telly................... gov is having a slap down now on melanotan, shutting down multiple websites that sell the stuff... they reckon its causing cancer mostly in the male gay community as they are the biggest users.

Back to DNP............. Suze found out one of the women that attends her bootcamps was taking it so she dismissed her on the spot... gave her the course fee back and told her to fuck off!.... dont blame her bro, if anything untoward had happened to that women suzys bootcamps would be under the micro scope and we would be thousands £s worse off............ FUCK THAT!!

Catalyst's picture

I can understand why Suzy did that. Talking with the boy that owns my gym,(you may well have come across him on stage Vike), he's made it clear anyone moving DNP around the gym will be picking their teeth up off the floor.

VIKING EVOLUTION's picture

Yeah i dont blame him one bit sounds like you run the gym like us!.. we have a crew that monitor whats being moved around and if its anything unknown or bad/re-labelled, tabs out of blister pks etc.... the offenders are fkn history and the word goes around the gyms so they end up with nowhere decent to train.

2amps found in the changing yesterday.. 1 test E 1 nandro....... im not having that either bro.

Sorry to hear your loss man, my sympathy goes out to his family more then anything.

Man, sorry about the loss. We are hearing more and more tragedies related to DNP. I'm not hating on it either, but when I here of a substance that can kill you at 28 I really hope people think long and hard about its use. In the medical field we talk about the risk vs the benefit of drug. Well, it appears in the case of DNP the risks far outweigh the benefit. This stuff needs to removed from the bodybuilding community, IMO. People have cut successfully for many years without it!

I wasn't in the most productive frame of mind this afternoon so I took a look at the MRC (medical research council) data on DNP. I was quite shocked to see a direct link on over 60 fatalities in the uk since 2008.

Suggest a rethink for anyone with this on their radar.

Brother I couldn't agree more.. Scary stuff.

Sorry for what happened.
I am a "hater" towards DNP and don't see any good in it. I will always try to steer folk away from it if I can. I'm glad for your post and this information and I also hope that it may help others rethink their path if it includes this poison.

Damn, my condolences to his family. No way, no how should that shit have any place in our lives..

Catalyst's picture

It's full name is 2,4-Dinitrophenol, an ATP inhibitor so not connected to Mast / Winny. I didn't ask too many questions in light of how "raw" the emotion will still be so soon after the even, but yes, the cause of death has been detailed as heart failure due to recreational drug use.

Don't think he was on cycle at the time of death. We talked about his competition prep cycle which he would have been starting end of this month so believe he was off.

Darktide's picture

That is tragic news for sure. Sorry for your loss brother. It is good that you tried to intervene and give the knowledge that you have especially with your credibility in the field. I realized this last year that if I was completely health conscious I would never use tren as I personally believe it has no real health benefits to it. Aside from gaining muscle, it is a cardio killer as well as hell on the lipids.

So as you said I try to not judge anyone for the substances they use to achieve their goals but still sometimes I can't help to think at what expense we are willing to pay for some extra outward appearances.

I think we're all guilty of taking a few risks, but I like to think mine are educated and calculated risks. Got me thinking about not being around to see my kids growing up etc, my physique would never be worth that price.

Sad story. I Feel bad for the kids and wife. Also situations like this give AAS a bad reputation... RIP
