Saying bye to your dog.
ad
What a crap weekend.
Last night had my 15 year old Labrador euthanised. Been obviously coming for a while at that age, I thought I'd prepared myself for it. I was wrong. I feel like I've lost my best mate.
House feels empty, not used to not having a dog around. Worst bit was telling my aughter this morning when she got up that the dog was gone. Explained she was in pain etc and it was the right thing to do but still makes you do a bit of soul searching.
RIP mate.

dogs are such a great part of family. i know your pain it is hard to lose a good animal. i lost my springer spaniel when i was and boy and i still miss her many many years after she passed. the years of joy that come with a good dog far outweigh the pain of their loss. i have a 12 yr old beagle hes in great shape but i know that wont last forever and will be a complete mess when he goes.... i hope if their is a heaven that all my dogs will be there with me in the afterlife along with my family:)
Update - the new family member has been with us for 11 days now, behaves like he's been here for years. Lovely dog, follows me everywhere. We're very lucky to have him. Can't believe some POS used to kick and beat him??????
;)
I rescued a puppy $50 to have him neutered before we could bring him home. He's 6 now. Best dog I've owned. Can't say the same about our $350 whacked out pug.
He's an absolutely awesome dog. Goes to show you doesn't have to cost a fortune.
So sorry my brother! My sincerest condolences to you and your family! I underwent the same situation some time ago and gave way to many tears! Pets are so much an integral part of the family! Loving and healing thoughts sent to you and your family!
my condolences brother. I had to do it to my best friend, 9 year old pit last month. He had stomach cancer and was at the end of his rope. Sad thing to do. Definitely will make a grown man cry. They're at peace now and no longer suffering.
That is one of the worst feelings you can have. I won't even pretend to have the words. I love my dog more than most ppl. My condolences
Thanks mate. I know what you mean. I once told someone I work with I prefer dogs to people. She thought I was joking ........
Just got back from the dog rescue center. We have a new family member that has come home with us!
Sweet! What kind?
Siberian Husky. Rescue dog, 2 years old. Just taken him for a big long walk around the park. Settling in like he's been here for years!
Seeing he is a Husky make sure you have a well secured yard. Them dogs are runners.
CONGRATULATIONS Cat, couldn't be more Jazzed for you, your family and that new 4 legged child addition you brought into your family. and thank you!
Thanks. He's settled really quickly, has become like my shadow following me everywhere. Considering he's a rescue dog, he's unbelievably laid back.
That's super cool. You know my wife loves our dog but she keeps saying that when she's gone that we're not getting another dog. She's tired of dealing with the hair and she wants to be able to just take off whenever we feel like it without worrying about what to do with the dog. I've had a dog my entire life so I'm not sure I would be as happy without one....
I wasn't sure about getting another at first but the house just felt wrong with no pets, I couldn't stand it. Feels "right" again now, although back to hoovering twice a day......
RustyhookerHope you're doing well.
I'm getting close to this myself bro. I have a Saint Bernard that's 11 yrs old and she's living on borrowed time. I'm not a crier but when it comes time to put her down I will probably sob like a baby. She's had a great life and still doing ok. She might even be the first animal I'd consider letting a vet put her down rather than doing it myself....... It sounds like you loved your dog very much!
I love St Bernard's, wonderful breed. Enjoy her, you never know she might make it to 15 like mine did. I'm not the emotional type either, but I don't mind admitting I had several bouts of crying.
Thanks for your support, much appreciated.
something to enlighten all the animal people here and share something positive. my wife and I are both dog lovers very fond and hold something special for rotties. we will foster and pull most any rotties out of the kill shelters up to a hundred mile radius of our home, until we can find a permanent home. last nite we were able to adopt out one of our two boys. he only has three legs his previous owner claimed he couldn't afford the medication to treat an infected wound he suffered by being entangled in a barb wired fence. this open wound wasn't treated or cared for to the point he just surrendered him to animal services. I figured after getting this 2yr loving boy patched up he would just become our 3 legged critter. as fait would have it after getting the call that one of our brave veterans wanted to come see our dogs, this suv pulled up to the house, first this young pretty woman gets out walks to the back pulls a wheelchair from inside, passenger door opens out steps our visitor, he's a below the knee amputee. can you all guess what dog he fell in love with? two minutes into our visit all four of us shared a few tears followed up with some laughs. being a combat veteran myself we talked for a few hours and believe started a friendship that will bring us together again. having coffee Saturday morning... figured the members here on this post could appreciate this event.
Oh man,,, It sure got dusty in here... Thanks for sharing bro.
it was a pleasure my friend, I wish they all ended in such a manner.
that is great to hear super.. thanks for sharing ;-)
it was a pleasure Girl, as much as we try, unfortunately they all don't have such happy endings.
it is in the doing that counts ... we can't be all things to all people/dogs.. etc.. but being able to touch at least one person's life, save one dog... that has more meaning than we might ever know
it's this thought that guides us to do what we do Grrl, and it's very fulfilling my lady. thanks for the reminder, sometimes the cruel and the ugly block out the victories. no doubts you understand this
came back to check up on ya Cat, and I can't say I'm surprised what ya posted below. within a week of saying goodbye to my oldest girl my wife had me face to face with a 8wk old baby girl begging to come home with us. even tho during that 2hr car ride I thought I wasn't ready to put my heart into another dog I immediately revised that thought. first few weeks with the new baby girl sure relieved that awful feeling.
Thanks for checking up on me. I'm ok mate, shocked just how much it has affected me to be honest. It's stupid things like getting up in the morning and her not being there, the empty space where her bed used to be etc. can't concentrate at work at the moment, probably not a very pleasant guy to be around!
Taking wife and daughter to meet the potential new recruit tonight. Will never replace the one we've lost but should help us move forwards.
Wonderful story about the Rotty. Sounds like they'll be a great team.
I have no doubts for them, hope all goes your way tonight brother!
Well on Sunday we will have a new addition to the family......
2 year old Siberian Husky. Going to be a handful, but he's very calm for his age / breed. Everyone was really taken with him.
My daughter smiled for the first time in a while when she met him.
Took the day off today and went to a dog rescue center. I can't stand not having a dog around, it feels horrible in the house. Really soon after, but I just can't bare it.
Might have found a new addition for the household! Taking the wife and daughter there tomorrow to see what they think.
Sorry for your loss brotha! I know the feeling I have to do it a couple times in my life as well and it was rough both times, especially when you have kids to explain to!!
First, I'm very sorry about your dog. I can empathize with you on that. I've had a few dogs pass and it's always difficult. I've also had a few dogs that were miserable beasts, but it still left a hole where they used to be.
Second, I find it more difficult to deal with our kids when the dog passes. We had a "miserable beast" for a few years that basically went nuts and started biting everyone. I had no choice, but to put him down. That was over ten years ago and I still get grief from my kids about it! And they are the ones who got bit! Regardless, the furry beasts that live in our houses tend to become just a big a part of it as anyone else.
sorry to hear about your sad news best of luck to you and your family
RustyhookerThey really are you family. And definitly to be missed. Sorry for your loss :(
Thanks mate, appreciate it.
I put my 19 yr old down in November. It's still saw raw to me I teared up instantly reading your post. Sorry for your loss, just know you gave your dog the best life you could. Maybe one day will be reunited.....
19 - That's an amazing age to reach!
Sorry for what you went through too.
it's never easy to make that decision .. and I don't think that even though you know you are doing the right thing that is ever easy to say good bye to a family member. I remember making the apt for my best bud and crying my ass off on the phone. Its a wonder that she even understood what I was trying to say much less who I was. It was one of the most difficult things I ve had to do .. I remember the kids crying months after saying how much they missed him..
I think you always doubt yourself making that sort of decision. Human nature, nobody wants that sort of responsibility on their shoulders but it's part of having a pet I guess.
There were certainly a lot of tears yesterday from all of us. Worst bit was my daughter saying "this is the worst day of my life" and "I'll never smile again".
"this is the worst day of my life" and "I'll never smile again". Choked me up a bit... I remember my Daughter saying the exact same thing a few years back when I had to let my 13 year old Brittany cross the rainbow bridge..:(
That was definitely the lowest part of the weekend. I can deal with my own loss, but I struggle to watch those I care about grieving.
yeah it can be bad.. but I didn't doubt myself... my buddy was in a lot of pain and was having problems so much so that he wouldn't come out from behind the couch.. that's no way to live and to have asked him to be less than what he was just so I wouldn't have to cry or feel bad and miss the hell out of him is wrong. I hope to God that if there ever comes a day when I can't function some person who understands will put me out of my misery ... my son still talks about him .. he grew up with him and was there when he was born .. says he still misses him and its been a few years now.
Same thought process for me. She couldn't stand up from joint pain, shivering and whimpering and just collapsed in a heap when I tried to stand her up. No decision to make really. Still doubted myself mind you!
I'm Sorry To Hear About loss! My dog was my all she was w me thru some rough times! She was my baby one day my mom let her out she came back in a collapsed on the floor and never got back up! She was only 5 when this happened not only was I going thru a divorce I lost my baby! Stay strong mate!
oh.. not your dane???
Nope the Dane is doing great! That was my doberman:(
i m sorry regardless.. it is tough to lose them ;-(
Thanks mate.
