Leg press
ad
I can put a shit ton of weight on the leg press 900-1000lbs for 10 (good form and full range of motion) and my legs are not that big. I recently started doing squats, deadlifts and bridges instead. My squat is not great, my form is perfect (all the way down), my one rep max is 375 after 5 sets of high reps. My third set is 315 for 11-12reps. After 86ing the leg press I'm growing again. Does anyone think leg press blows? What muscle does it work ( upper thigh)? Just doesn't seem effect growth, maybe in 30-40 rep range?

Stick with squats!!
Over the course of 7 years I have gotten consistent gains in strength, size and stamina from back squats(narrow and wide stance), front squats, zercher squats, full cleans and air squats.
PM me if you like
The only thing leg press seems to be good for, from my own and a few friends experience, is some strength and also great for a deep stretch with only 1 plate on.
Tony makes a great point about the body/mind connection.
I agree, squats take a lot more out of me but they seem to give way more bang for the effort. I'm still making improvements and gains since I started doing them again.
mymymymyLeg press upto 12 reps 1 Set with very strict form 4-5 seconds up and down and squeezing at the top for 3 or more seconds. With a squat you safely and effectively cannot get the same tension, Contraction and squeeze as this. You said below you do five sets doing this intensity you will be lucky to manage 1 and then superset with leg extensions.
I'll try that tomorrow. Thanks
Leg press only works for me if I'm doing the 15-25 rep range, after I've hit my quads for some heavy weight
Ace VenturaSimilar to what Tony said, I was gonna say fuck leg press unless it's high rep. I've been doing high rep sets, with very short breaks, and yielding good results lately. There is also absolutely no substitute for real squats, in my opinion anyway.
Look up some vids of tom plats also lee priest . When i get on a leg press its high volume everytime and i do it closer to the end of my workout , my rep ranges range from 25,50,75,100 reps full range of motion , time under tension, and mind muscle connection. Anyone can throw heavy weight on anything and sling it around and use momentum to their advantage. Im a high volume high intensity guy but i also have my heavy weeks , its more or less about doing quality reps and targeting the intended muscle group correctly , more blood into a muscle equals more growth, the more angles the better, i also pre exhaust my legs before i train them.
Ya I agree with the high rep range. But I'm usually around 1st set 25, 2nd set 20, 3rd set 15, and 4th set 10+ and then 5th what ever I can do. Maybe I'll lower the weight and add more reps. I agree about throwing weight around, it doesn't work. Full range, slow and more reps. Almost never do less than 8 unless out of curiousity or to change it up for a short time. Maybe I just need to give leg press a break for a while or do it at the end.
I was taught when the burn sets in now your training pushing beyond the burn is what separates the good from the best , i am also a firm believer in the hack squat and wlaking lunges . The king is the hack squat and barbell squats than the walking lunges than the leg press . You cannot build great legs depending on just one , when i get to the leg press my legs are already fatigued they are thw second to the last of my exercises.
My legs and from my observations of others, as well as some of the all time greats, legs grow from higher reps. I like the hack squat, this other version of a hack squat at my gym, leg press, leg ext 1 legged and both legs at at time. Leg press definitely hits your quads, but depending on how you position your feet will determine if more of the stress is on the outer sweep or the inner tear drop.
