I agree with jpal, but I've seen a video in wich an MD gave himself an IM injection without aspirating...Youtube can be missleading, so just be carefull...
MD's go back and forth whether it is proper form to aspirate or not. One year they teach you should the next they teach you shouldnt but to be on the safe side one should always aspirate because it takes zero extra effort.
I've dumped into a bloodvessel even after aspirating...had slight downward movement wehn releasing the needle and that was enough for a small embolism. If you ever expereince one you'll never skip aspirating.
Honeslty I think it was a small blood vessel since it was only a mild embolism and when I aspirayed I probably colapsed the vessel which made it look like no blood whas there but then when I started to push the plunger it opened up. Luckily I had the needle clear before it set in...
