Kidneys took a beating when I had rhabdo so they worry me the most.

UncleYoked's picture

That's scary stuff man. Makes me think of those people who get overtraining syndrome. Brutal shit, what was the cause if you don't mind me asking.

Makwa's picture

Extreme dehydration from a prep and I entered 3 different classes during a competition. They were all back to back so just exited stage on 1 side and entered right again on the other. All the mandatories then posedowns were just too many isometrics coupled with the dehydration. Passed out in amubulance on my way to ER the next day from the pain and was in hospital for 3 days drugged up on valium and dulatid with IV's flushing my system. Myoglobin levels like 180,000 (high normal is 1,000) with CK like 185,000 (normal around 100). Doc said I was lucky I didn't end up having to be on dialysis the rest of my life. Keep a close eye on kidney values now. Liver values were over 1500 also. Took firsts in everything and the overall so I guess it was worth it Lol

UncleYoked's picture

Jesus fuck man, that's brutal.

press1's picture

No Pain - No Gain right Makwa?! Lmfao Jesus that sounds brutal, so did your eGFR suffer a permanent drop from this or was it just a huge temporary rise in creatine kinase?

I don't recall eGFR or creatine at the time. The myoglobin was the biggie they seemed to be worried about. My creatine is elevated and I saw a nephrologist afterwards. Given that I was a bodybuilder he expected my creatine levels to be jacked above normal. He said it is not an issue if above normal but will be an issue if it keeps climbing higher and higher. Hasn't climbed any higher fortunately. eGFR is fine.

Looks like Liver is just inching into the lead now!

Oh yeh for sure they are all important mate, & it tends to be that the area that is currently bad or needs sorting out will be the first you look at when getting them back next time. However when you set up a poll a member can only select one option rather than several at a time as such - so to make it work and be a bit of fun for everyone participating I have to ask people to just pick one option.

Will be interesting to see the comments on here. I just went in on Monday for blood tests that covers all these and more, apart from IGF1.
Can only seem to get IGF1 tested in London for a reasonable price, which is too far for me, its between £300 to £400 plus around mine.

press1's picture

It ain't cheap is it buddy, I want to get the Cycstatin C test done as opposed to creatinine based but damn everywhere I've looked its at least £100 just for that 1 test. A lot of the testing centres are indeed in London too aren't they.

I think this why you probably don't see many HGH and IGF tests on UK boards. I am basically going of the feedback and blood tests posted by our America friends.

Zee's picture

Yeah just searched for Cycstanin C could not get that with my clinic. I have requested creatinine to be included. Still waiting on results. Called the clinic and the lab hasn't still received the bloods. I think RM may have lost or delayed delivery.
I have been told may have to go in again for bloods to drawn as there's a chance my blood sample may no longer be intact..
I am using medicheck but not the finger prick test but rather going into a local clinic to have the bloods drawn and then having it posted to a lab.

press1's picture

Medicheck have always been the guys I have thought of using if getting it done privately, I am in somewhat of a fortunate position as I get bloods drawn every 3 to 6 months at the doctors to monitor my haemoglobin level for the B12 anemia I have so it shows all the levels in there apart from testosterone and IGF. As soon as I give the sample its put into a fridge in the nurses room, then within hours is transported to the local hospital which takes about 5 minutes so throught the process its always kept refrigerated. I can see if it takes longer than 1 day in the post then they will discard it as the serum may become less readable - not sure how it works though.

Apparently it costs a lab 5 times more to test Cystatin C than it does creatinine, which is why they don't like doing it.

HanginLow's picture

its a pretty expensive test over here too, $100 minimum, but the thing is you can do it like anywhere. There blood draw places on every corner, probably not the case over there

I always just do the creatinine based eGFR, I take 3-5 days off training depending on how hard I have been training, stop taking creatine for same amount of time and go in fasted.

The clinic I had my tests done usually post the bloods to a lab.
But looks like most places you have to have the IGF tested quite quickly or they may do it on site and is not recommended to be posted by a clinic to a lab. Unless I assume they use special delivery for transporting blood samples.

Blood testing centres/companies are definitely on the rise here with the whole Fitness market expanding like crazy, people wanting to check their blood for performance and hormone related reasons. With the finger prick tests for the more basic tests its fine as we can just do it at home and send it back in the post but for the proper bloodwork obv it requires a proper blood sample which can only really be done in these centres as far as I know - unless you know a nurse I guess. Same with all the TRT and HGH clinics you have over there - I'm not even sure if they exist over here at least I have never seen one but I guess they are more probable in the big cities if they do.

Kidneys always worry me the most because of their lack of regeneration, always keeping an eye on creatinine (when tested correctly with time from training and off creatine).

Secondly my RBC is one that gets elevated easily especially on higher doses of test.

Overall though when I get clients bloods I am just hoping for not a shit ton of red / out of range markers.

Interesting stuff - That's the first time I've seen it say not to eat meat 24hrs prior to bloods as it can lower the eGFR reading. Never knew either there is such as thing as Measured GFR. This is something I always question, almost all bloods on here I have seen tend to fall below the 90 threshold on eGFR especially the guys who have been cycling for several years plus - yet they state that is the danger area for Chronic Kidney Disease. Even more rare you see it over 100 which is what it implies you should be up to 40 years old!

Yeah, very rare to see a GFR above 100 in the bodybuilding world
