+ 8 Do you have Short or Long arms for D/L / Bench chart

ad

Here is a Great article I found that determines whether you have good mechanics for Deadlifting or benching by showing how to measure leg / torso and arm length in relation to height. It then determines if they are classed as long or short:

https://powerliftingtechnique.com/deadlifting-with-short-arms/

Get your tape measure out guy's :-) No - Not for that Forehead lol

It's shown as I was expecting that I have relatively long legs in comparison to a short torso which is why I find them pretty awkward to get into position for and often hit my knees on the way up - Mine are 55% of my height.

Achak's picture

I have shorter arms and that is why I use the sumo stance.

Greg's picture

...My head's big too so I use the T-Rex stance

Achak's picture

I had an ex who would send me T-Rex pics all the time. She thought she was so funny lol

Several studies have shown that the researchers tend to have shorter lives and a violent death.

The number one cause of Death is dismemberment combined with blunt force trauma via the dismembered limbs .

Number two cause is being raped to death via a silver back gorilla .

I use to know a lad younger than me who competed Internationally when I was an alchy. Few inches shorter than me and absolutely built for deads and squats - Just looking at him walking reminded me of an ape with proper short legs, long ass torso and long arms Lol Surprisingly though he was massive on top too but his bench really sucked so that impacted his total a lot.

I have Short arms , Average legs , and apparently a very long torso.

I have three herniated disc in my lower back so DL is just not even an option , but I go hard on Squats .

press1's picture

That's surprising that you can still squat fine bud - You have good genetics for benching if you are barrel chested also ....

Most people are not great at all the big 3 lifts. A lot can DL and squat heavy but their bench doesn't match up.
Or they have a great bench and the DL and squat are ok.
Thor and the PL Eric Lillibridge had great Dl and squat but think their bench was in the mid to high 500's.
Now Larry Wheels had all 3. High DL and squat and bench around 650 I think.
Not a lot of people that can bench over 600 raw.

I think the bench as a lot to due with gentics and natural body leverages. Barrel chest, big tri's, back, and shorter arms.

addicted.to.pain's picture

I thankfully do have a gifted upper body and naturally big strong legs both of which make up for my lower back.

My long torso though has made me really have to work hard on my core over the years , I make myself go hard on squats because of the fact I cant touch DLifts . Squats are the only thing even comparable to Dead lifts when to comes to really triggering that full body growth and strength .

Gzerored1's picture

Explains a lot, average torso and legs and long arms here

maddogg's picture

Interesting. I have a weird build in terms of length. Always wondered about leverage etc.. looking at people I’ve trained with and their different builds and what they were good at, or lacking. I’m long limbs and supershort upper body. Both my sisters had difficulty in their 3rd trimester of pregnancy due to short upper bodies. I’m 6’ 2” but sit shorter in a car than some of my friends that are 5’8”. They had to get a larger wheel chair for me after surgery because my legs were to long for a standard one. Got to go to work, going to put tape to myself when I have time for the ratios.

press1's picture

What was the surgery for bud?

maddogg's picture

Rt shoulder rotator cuff and biceps tendon reattached lower at the top. Makes my bicep not look right. Wheel chair was just because you’re kind up messed up from anesthesia. Physical Therapist said to never curl heavy but I haven’t had issues with that thankfully, just lost a little strength in that bicep maybe because of leveraging of the lower attachment point

press1's picture

That sounds like the result of some brutal lifting for sure! Was it from benching or rowing/DLing you got the injury?

Here’s one for you. The longer the muscle and shorter the tendon the better potential for growth...

press1's picture

That's something else I was reading about - Joint size and tendon size. Some believe that you can have relatively small muscles but as long as the tendon is very strong thats what counts in strength, also those with thicker joints are lucky too.

Confirmed what I expected.

Long legs 57%
Short torso 43%
Longish arms 43%

If only my hands where above average because I gotta work my grip a lot. It’s always my weakest point in my DL

I’m built the same way.

DfromPhilly's picture

Nice. we shouldn’t really be good at anything with those kind of stats. I’m proud of us lol

press1's picture

Yeah my arms came out similar at 44% - Its always been at the bar though, I've never understood why others find it easy to drop their butt down and behind the bar but now I do. You can see why these guys with short legs and long torso's are so good at it can't you when you look at the stickman diagrams!

Yea it’s crazy the advantage some people have. Like look at Ben Pollack. That dude was born to lift heavy shit. Giant hands, crazy long arms and average to short legs. But it also shows maybe why his bench is his worst lift.

The one thing I don’t get is why my squat is so good. It’s not bigger than my DL, but by PL strength standards it’s my best lift. Weird with my long ass legs.

press1's picture

Same with me bud - Long arms and narrow ass rib cage, I mean no depth at all and narrow shoulders. But yet its my best lift - but I do genuinely believe that if you want to be very good at something you'll make sure you are and you tend to give it the most attention.

Tell me something dude - Do you use Beta Alanine at all? I've just got some delivered, I've tried it once before but didn't like the itchiness of it but I'm gonna give it another go. The reason I ask is I rarely reach lactic acid build up because of low reps so will it give me any benefit like creatine does?

In a promo × 1
maddogg's picture

I use Beta Alanine in the am first thing mixed in with my amino cocktail, and pre workout about 4 grams each time. I’m sure you know it builds in your system like creative does. When you combine the two one is supposed to get synergetic results. At first I couldn’t stand the tingling either, but I look forward to it now, so give it some time, you may grow accustomed. I feel like it really picks me up, but my amino drinks also have caffeine. I look forward to rubbing my forehead and eyes in a circular motion with the palms of my hands. With what’s going on probably want to make sure hands were washed beforehand. I train at different rep ranges, but don’t notice lactic acid build up much anymore like I used to when I was younger and not using it. I get to positive failure before I feel much build up. Was wondering if this in anyway might reduce muscle growth by not getting significantly build up lactic acid. If you train in low rep range I would probably not worry about that though.

Cheers Bud :))

I like the little pick me up and the tingles. I never noticed better gains but I did notice better performance in the moment. Or at least a better workout.

Unfortunately I’m a non-responder to creatine. I dunno if I eat enough red meat or if it just doesn’t help. But I never got anything from it.

press1's picture

Ahh well sod it! I'm just throwing in everything at the moment, if it looks like it'll work and its cheap I'll buy it and use it Lmao

Cool read.. I like how it says if you have short arms you’re definitely working a lot harder & fucked! No wonder “The Mountain” has the best dead lift he’s so damn tall. ;0)
Muscle attachments:insertion points have a small role too. Genetics plays a roll as some peoples muscle attachments/insertion points are slightly different effecting muscle bellies & their explosive capabilities.
