What happened to gym etiquette??
This just drives me Fkn crazy in the gyms these days.. I am OLD school and back in my day, members all respected one another while working out. Even in the heat of the moment when competitions were upcoming and your opponents were also there next to you trying to psych you out mentally, they would help, respect and show true gamesmanship during that time. Now days, we have all these younger day yuppies that have absolutely NO CLUE in these gyms, talking, texting on their cell phones and chit chatting while holding up equipment etc. They come in groups of like 3-5 and just annoy all of us true veterans by not knowing what true gym etiquette is and not even knowing how to train as well. I miss those days of when we all helped out one another no matter what.. I have moved to several different gyms over the years and no matter what, these issues still occur at any gym. How do we educate this younger generation on what gym etiquette really is ppl??? Is this only happening in my area or does anyone else of the old school era see what I am seeing?? Peace out to all..

I constantly have to go up and ask dudes how many sets they have. Most say go ahead and jump in between their sets. Its the cranky mofo that won't let me get in between his sets that really aggravate me.
Hitman187Amen brother! I was just talking about the same thing how I cant stand people sitting on machines just texting or whatever. The worse part is ill move on and the whole time im watching them like a hawk. Ill get done three different exercises while there still in between the same same. Groups suck too. Your not being that productive if you roll in there with 5 other people.
At our gym you don't want to go there in the morning during the week unless you go very early. The walking dead are there from 6:30-11:30. It becomes geriatric land. Don't get me wrong they are for the most part all nice people and have my respect but they are sloooooooow. And due to bad coaching they come in and do the most same idiotic exercises every day. Back when I used to use the smith was the worst. The one trainer likes to show them standing push ups on it. Really? You are going to tie up that piece of equipment to do a push up you could just as easily do against the wall? lol
Stay tuned for my next topic that will be on these so called PERSONAL TRAINERS.... That will also be one good topic to go off on.. LOL.
AnonYes!! I'm ready for that one
In fairness to personal trainers I really have seen some good ones as well.
agreed... they will not be apart of the discussion.. :>)
Iv'e seen the older guys put the young punks in their place, one kid kept saying n**** this and n that, he was quickly acting like the white boy he was after the confrontation.
When it comes to gym etiquette iv'e noticed the older guys can be just as bad though. Yea they're not bullshitting on their phones but they are talking and eating shit with one another and don't re-rack their weights most of the time. But then again 75% of people in my gym dont re-rack.
I hear ya homie.. the re-racking is also an issue and another topic we can post about and discuss amongst all of us too. I am just going back when I first started my lifting which is over 25 yrs ago and how it was back those days and believe me, it is totally different now from then.. We all are held accountable when in the gym and need to be considerate of others when training. its as simple as that the way I see it but doesn't happen in my area as it is in others..
i see where you are getting at. im 25 so for me 25 years ago, the gym was kicking my mom in the womb. Its just the younger generation man, everyone is infatuated with their phones, unaware of whats going on around them. Annoys the hell out of me. I do always have my phone on me though in the gym because i listen to my music, helps me get and stay into the zone better.
LOL.. Well I wasn't gonna go there about your age BUT what you said is very true about the womb thing.. haha.. Listening to music is one thing and I have nothing against that at all. That is not a distraction of any kind, its part of this generation of gym rats now days and I am good with it.
I don't tend to have many problems with idiots hogging a piece of equipment, because I just go up and ask if they're done. Usually they say yes or let me know when they will be done and this seems to get them going.
What drives me nuts is when people use equipment and then don't stack their weights. People just seem to use what they want and walk away. Then you have no idea if they're done or not and then have to rack their weights for them. It's usually the same people that have been lollygagging around that piece of equipment. This is the grownup world people. Clean up after yourself!
I'm a younger guy and I'm usually zoned into my workout but occasionally I'll get into bullshitting and hold up some equipment. If I see someone looking at it I always offer it up to them. Did this with an older dude who was still a monster. Ended up making friends with the guy by doing so
Yea we have a young asian kid that just joined recently who is competing and I'll give him credit, he busts his ass. But he has (or did have) a tendency to not pick up the shit he drags out. I got after him a little bit, it seems to have worked. Now if I could only get him to come in at a different time than me. LOL, the kid seems to have a sixth sense of what I am planning on doing and gets in my way.
Oh not putting shit away gets me. The worst I do is bullshit a little or check my email between sets. I clean up after more people than I can count. Trainers included
Oh boy do I have that same issue.. I have 2 dudes that no matter what time I go, they are there and it seems so wacky. I think they have a GPS strapped to my car or ball sack or whatever but they are always fkn there.. Uuuuhhhgggg.. WTF is going on now days in these gyms.. LOL. The things or topics that come up on these postings is off the hook.. Keep it going I say...
LOL! I seem to run into that on leg day.
Especially leg day! The funny part is I haven't even been sticking to a set day for legs, the last three to four weeks it has varied between Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and yet somehow he will be after the squat rack, lol. If the kid wasn't as serious as he is I would me more of a dick (to encourage him to come at a different time) but he does work hard and it shows. For a little guy he is ripped.
There's a guy at my gym, a university med gym, but he doesn't go there to do much more than walk at a pace of 1 mile per hour whilst texting and checking out both females and males. I have nothing against his orientation; to each his/her own, but phones are starting to piss me off, especially when I am halfway through a superset and some douche's phone erupts in sudden noises.
The private gym I attend has a sign hanging out front that states "No phones allowed!", and I think they have offered the best solution to this horrible thing.
If I am included in another selfie taken by a man, I will be punching him in the face, kicking him in the groin, and taking his phone.
Its all about image 1st and everything else comes 2nd these days. It's "cool" to go to the gym now so you can post selfies all over spacebook to see how many likes you get (thank you social media) im only 33 but was brought up a lot different from people my age, eroids is the only social media outlet i use. Im fortunate enough to have a local gym with 3 llocation's a dungeon, fitness center and a mma center. I prefer to hammer it out in the dungeon everything is raw iron plate loaded equipment and lots of big boys running around. Most people who sign up usually end up at the fitness place so it kinda keeps alot of these shenanigans at bay.
That's how it is art my gym. The downtown is called the dungeon. The nice state of the art gym is in the suburbs. So I don't deal with these problems unless I go to the suburbs. Aggravates me when I'm there. So I usually stay downtown.
Always see people on their phones, or the younger guys with their little notebooks, writing after every set. There are a couple apps I use to keep track of my max bench, squat, deadlift. But my phone stays in my locker till I'm done, I'll input all info when I'm done, I wont tie up equipment to do these things.
Tink22Older folks are just as bad around me... But what gets me is the foriegners. College town so there's plenty they have no idea what they are doing.
There was this younger guy sitting on a piece of equipment I wanted. He would do a set.Fuck around on his phone for a bit.Do a set, fuck around on his phone for a bit again.I finally went up and said "Are you going to finish up or just keep fucking around on your phone?"I was a bit bigger than him.He looked at me and said(he possibly seemed a little nervous) "I have my workout on my phone and I'm timing my rest periods." I said "Sorry Dude, carry on."LMAO Who the hell would think of putting their workout on a phone?Oh yeah, this younger generation!
Exactly... I am 50 yrs old and can remember my routine in my sleep.. All this computerized technology has this world all screwed up totally.. The younger generation DEPENDS on social media and all its perps to move forward in life.. Uuuuuhhhhggggg.. Whats next is the question... Thnks for stopping by..
Sitting down on vital equipment while using their cell phone is what gets me going.. I wont even bring my cell phone into the gym.. ipod for fasted cardio in the morning but that is it. No distractions, get in, find your pump, re-rack your weights and get the fuck out.
Amen to that one bud.. I totally agree.. That's the way I roll in the gym. No phone, no nothing but my routine in mind..
Well its a high.. especially when your ON.. shit by the time I get to the gym I am so pumped up I feel like running over some of these cunts or taking a 45 to their boney heads but honestly most of the time they will just get out of the way, they see the look in your eye or the pump you have going.. we mean business, thats why when I am fortunate enough to have a training partner with me we call it "getting our money." We are there to get paid. We are there to do business. Its love, and boy do I love money! This GH is expensive!! Lol
at our local gym the squat rack is always empty but the bench press and lat pull down always has several young guys hanging around.
Well mob you just got me started. I have been in and out of the gym for over 20 years and boy how it has changed. You hit the nail on the head. I'm 41 and have seen it change like crazy. Other thing dam want to be trainer's. Train everyone the same way same style and the client looks like there about to die so what happens they say fuck this and quit. No respect anymore on phones talking and god knows what else it is just crazy. I Have a 1300 Square foot basement im going to get my own equipment and train there dude I want to smack the shit out of people in the gym. Ok I'm done now mob. Good post
Wow. You also hit the other topic bro on these personal trainers.. I hear you loud and clear there too. That is another topic I will post in the days coming. thanks for your input big Z..
My wife works at the gym I go to (FREE) lol, Anyway, their longest tenured trainer is worthless. She likes to take on little old ladies, soak them for money while giving them no gains or losses in return. It is disgusting.
I see that crap at my gym too. I mean shit where is the fucking pride in that. It is so wrong on so many levels. Its sick. And they get nothing out of it, awful.
Bingo... Another nail on the head sir.. This is another topic I will post about and we can take that one to the next level... This is getting good... LOL
RustyhookerMoved to Off Topic.
There's not much help for the youngsters. The old hardcore gym you'd have the big dudes jam you up for being dumb. Now it's like ymca type health club ridden with crossfit.
You can say that again sir.. Time has changed a lot since then..
I get after their ass if they are really stepping over the line. So far it usually works. Truth be told tho the kids where I live now are not as bad as what I am sure you would find in other areas. Hell even 20 minutes from us I bet it is way worse.
I used to BUT I caught myself B4 I would jump on them... Don't need any hassles outside gym life but it has crossed my mind too.. Just living in a large city is my issue. Thanks for stopping by...
And that is the difference I was implying. Small town/city life all these kids know that if they start acting stupid word will spread. Otherwise they would probably go full retard too.
