I'm close to 6' weigh 228lbs with abs but yet every time I look in the mirror I see small. When I'm out in public in a tank top or at the beach without a shirt I see people staring and whispering to each other.Friends, coworkers and complete strangers make comments on how big I am. I wonder how big I have to get until I'm satisfied with how I look. The only time I remotely feel big and muscular is when I have a nice pump going at the gym,
I'm aware of the muscle dysmorphia syndrome and I wonder how many other members on eroids may have it?

This cracked article touches on some of what we are talking about here. And it is hilarious.
http://www.cracked.com/article_19177_5-shocking-ways-you-overestimate-yo...
Benny BlancoI'm horrible at this. I've actually consciously practiced seeing my self as 'not small' (can't say huge though). I have to tell myself "5'7" 200 does not look small to the average person. I actually had I physical a few months ago. Doctor read my chart and expected "another fat truck driver". He said I was in great shape. That actually felt pretty good. I'm also glad I don't have a low self esteem to go with my distorted self image. That might not be fun.
You are obese Benny. Well according to the BMI scale most of us are considered obese. I had to see a specialist about a shoulder injury 2 yrs ago and his 1st question was if I was on steroids.
at 5'11 and 225 .. I am considered obeast by all the charts.. if I was in the military I d be on a diet restriction and exercise program... (in the old days I don't know what they do now) ... and my doctor keeps trying to get me to go see the dietician .. she is kind enough not to say anything about how disgustlying fat I am though ... so I like her ;-)
Benny BlancoLol bmi scale. That's awesome, I love that stuff. Off topic, but my dermatologist keeps telling me the juice is causing my acne. Well duh! That's why I'm here!
your not fat just a lil pudgy lmao jk
Benny BlancoCompared to you...sheeeeit. You're my inspiration.
thought of you when I housed the box of toaster strudels earlier.
Benny BlancoThank you. I keep looking at those every time I go to the grocery store. I don't really like pop tarts. And I like the sweet (no pun intended) frosting packs the strudels come with. I eat eggo waffles with powdered sugar all the time too. I love them things.
we all have it Harley... its why we train so hard. It is why we juice. It is why I look at my arms and see 'small" ... it is why I don't understand how big i am or why I am confused when people recognize me.. it is why I argue with Goth about how big he is.. when he thinks he is skinny.
My Wife argues with me about the same thing saying how huge I am. In the back of my mind I just think she's trying to be nice. By the way tell Goth to keep them forum posts coming. Freaking funny as hell...
AnonThis rings very true for me. I def have some variation of this. I think we all do, it's what keeps us striving to become better. I know I look in the mirror and don't feel "big"- somedays I feel that I don't even look like I compete. Somedays I look in the mirror and don't see All the muscle I've put on- I see lack of definition and smoothness, and it makes me wonder if everyone else just sees it as fat. I've been asked more and more lately if I'm "on something" so others must be seeing what I'm not. We are our own worst enemies. Keep pushing Harley..
My Wife and i saw your pics and she was very impressed. People are accusing her of being on something lately as well. I guess the prop and var have done her good.
AnonThank you! Get her ass on here!
Give them a vote if you find it helpful.PermalinkWifey is on here but doesn't log in very much
we have similar stats bro and i feel you , i always get the question "do you compete" in my head, im like compete for what , worlds skinniest lmfao.. i accepted the fact that ill prob will never feel big but, i can always keep pushing it until i use table cloths as shirts lmfao
Worlds skinniest lol. I checked your pics bro and you look great. Couple of my friends are competitors and asked me if I'm gonna give it a try and I said what so I could get laughed off stage?
I have body dysmorphia as well, but I feel it's what makes us great. Honestly if we didn't have that self perceived image of our self, we wouldn't be as productive in the gym. Shoot for the moon and worst case scenario you will be amongst the stars. As long as you don't take it as far as this guy, to become like a "ken" doll. This nooka got problems, he had more surgery than Joan rivers.
Harley, being 6' 228 and more cut is NOT small by any means. I am also 6' around 225 like you...and lean as F$&@! There are maybe 1-2 other guys in my community that look "big" like me and it's def not a normal thing. My wife comments on my physique all the time and she said yesterday she wants like a 10th what I got. Be satisfied with how you are, it depends on your goals too. Me personally this is where I wanna be for good. I made that decision over a year ago just cuz I believe "bulking and cutting" is foolish. I build lean mass year round and fool with my bf%...like now the calipers say 4%, yea right...it's probably more like 6-7, but I LOVE IT. Ppl are more intrigued or jealous that we put the time and effort in to look this way. They are intimidated cuz they can't figure out how to do it lol. My .02 brudda
I would have to dig it up but there was a science article on how people perceive themselves. We usually mentally lock on to a self image at a certain age or time and it is very difficult to break out of. I think with us it is that mooch more amplified. We change two maybe three times a year! It is a mind fuck.
I will dig that article/story up.
Very good reply's,all of them. I pretty much figured i wasn't the only one who felt like this. If we all looked in the mirror every morning and saw Dorian Yates I suppose we would not train as hard or try to pack in as much food as we do...
I think we all have an element of that, probably a big part of why we keep going to the gym and doing what we do. I'm 6-1 and around 260lbs and I don't think I'm "big" when I look in the mirror, I really don't. My wife laughs, thinks it's hilarious.
you have just described me bro. everytime I look in the mirror I see a small skinny guy at 5'7 and 203 ill never be satisfied hence why I make a good competitor because I strive to be the best I can possibly be no matter what I have to eat, how often , or how much. when others are sleeping or going out im trying to figure out the edge learning more because I ll never be done and the hours I put in learning and the others they put in in other aspects puts me ahead in my eyes. don't shy away from looking at yourself thinking that embrace it and continue the chase my man. good post.
It's a double edged sword man. On one side you keep pushing yourself which leads you to stay motivated in other aspects of life (career, relations, business, school, etc) but on the other hand you're never satisfied and feel like you could do better.
Embrace it man, this is what successful go through everyday. People who live off their previous success get delusional after a certain point, and end up becoming contempt with where they at...ultimately leading to mediocrity.
Ya man, my calves always my calves
I'm always 10 pounds of away from being satisfied. But everytime I gain 10 more I want another 10 and then I'll be happy. So basically were never gonna be happy.
I think everyone does to some degree. If I am having a bad day I'll take a picture. For some reason I always like the pictures, yet hate what I see in the mirror. It's odd, but it's what I have found works for me.
I think the average person is delusional. I mean I see a lot of very out of shape people in booty shorts and tight tank tops. These people clearly have a delusion that they look great. Where as people like us, never feel satisfied. I look at it as a good thing, it keeps me going. If I looked in the mirror and thought, "god damn I'm hot!" I wouldn't feel the need to push as hard as I do.
My point is, try to find a good balance. Being picky about your body is ok, just don't pick it apart. You already look better than 95% of the population. (obviously I have never seen you but I'm guessing if you're here you've got most people beat)
I was totally content with the way I looked when I was a 130lb Skelton at 6ft tall. I really thought I looked great. Now I'm never happy. It's a bad thing but it's also partially what keeps us motivated.
I hear ya. I used to be a model, the skinny high fashion kind. I was about 120, and 5'10 I though I was perfect lol now when I see those pics I think I look like shit, but I'm still not happy now. Itsva viscous cycle
The day you started lifting is the day you became for ever small because you will never be as big as you want to be.

AnonSo.damn.true.
Ain't that the truth bro..
X2
AnonWe all do to some degree. As long as we are able to harness it and control it I say it's all good! I know that fixation drove me to heal from my neck surgery.
I have a lil bit of that body dysmorphia as well. People stare & I ocassionally get the man your a beast thing, but my perception of self image is a lil off w reality I think 5'11 218lbs. I always gotta stop and say to myself your doing good buddy keep it up.
We will never be satisfied bro..were all competitors and won't settle for average..that's why we take it more serious than your average person..we strive for greatness and feel there is always room for improvement somewhere..
Exactly. That drive to be better than you were yesterday is a good thing.
Meant to put this in general talk.
