Quarter Repper

ad

At the gym the other day I was working traps and I happened to look over and 2 young dudes were loading up the leg press with 18 plates. I said to myself here we go again! I see this way too much at my gym to not know what's coming next.
The bigger of the two took his seat and slapped his quads preparing them for the brutal set ahead. With a loud scream he raised the weight to the starting position and unlocked the locking mechanism. He lowered it slow for a total of 5 friggin inches and powered the tremendous weight back up. I think he got 10 reps or so.
I also witnessed a dude the day before doing seated military presses with 185lbs. He only went down to the top of his head before pushing the weight back up. These guys usually get up after there set and walk around with their arms way out to their side like the have Dorian Yates lats
Do you guys say anything to people like this or do you just ignore them. I want to help them out but I'm afraid they'll take it wrong. A lot of people in my gym don't talk to me anyway because my wife says i look mean and intimating. I always thought people didn't talk to me because I was an ass. I'm sure I don't have perfect form but I do try to go strict until the last few reps and then I might cheat a little.

Exactly what Gothic said ....i see that ALL the time its never about the form its about the amount of weight and their ego...notice how their bodies NEVER change....its always worth the giggle though cause i know exactly as which point they're gonna groan loudly and sweat profusely and its not even half way down but like one of the guys said its better that they're in the gym regardless

Even if you tried to help the dude, chances are he'd brush it off, because that would mean he'd have to lower the weight a TON, and that would be damaging to his ego---which is probably his sole reason for being there in the first place.

Why care what other people are doing when im training unless they are in my way. Im too focused. Anyway id rather young guys be in the gym at all instead of eating donuts, texting and playing xbox.

Every once and awhile I will take one under my wing and get him/her pointed in the right direction. It is cool to see when they actually listen and grow.

i actually use this technique sometimes its callef half reps....its used by some power lifters and it gets your body and mind ready for the actual weight. ...i don't care what anyone says i know for a fact these actually work....they help break through platues everyone should do them.......i use this with bench and military press and squats...you can do them on the smith or in a power rack

18 plates is my heavy set with good form X 6... if I can do them I'm sure most of you can but I get what you pointing. Most of people who do this shit is to just impress other dudes & gain respect I think, notice how most if not all the dudes who do this "heavy" sets don't look impressive it all

Harley1969's picture

18 plates with good form and i would bust something. LOL I took some advice from TonyTulo and dropped the weight and going for the pump and burn at higher reps. My hats off to you though, you are pushing a lot of weight brother!

The whole military press thing I agree with the guy I only touch my head. At that point I'm at 90 degrees and I've had a previous pec tear so going lower does nothing for me.

I would never say anything to anyone about form unless I knew them really well. With one exception. Today I saw some high school kid load 315 to deadlift and he couldn't have weighed more than 140lbs. Watched him once with his back bent and winced. He went to try again and I just stopped him and told him to lower the weight before he threw his back out

Good looking out Ted

Yea man. Better to keep your head down and not offend people unless they're gonna hurt themselves.

We all eventually learn proper form and lifting

what bothers me worse is guys that wear sunglasses in the gym.

alayna's picture

and wear jeans, and sit on the pec deck on their cell phones for a half hour

We got one of those also and he's a quarter repper on leg press.

No way...really? That is weird....

yeah no shit. i belong to 2 different gyms and there's one at each. one guy finally stopped because he saw us laughing at him. the other guy is just too out there man, we're talking serious mental problems i think.

I do half squats out of respect for my knees and an l5 s1 issue. Working within the limitations of an abused body. I don't get much lower than a seated position.
You definitely see it all the time though. The 1" shrug probably annoys me the most. I have a buddy that wrist straps up and I don't think anything moves but his hips and calves.
They just haven't learned the importance of the contraction. Some people want to do something and some just want to look good trying.

I love the 1/2" shrug guys. They grab weight way too heavy and can't even shrug it an inch. At least they look super cool and tough!

My favorite is the "heavy squatter". You know the ones... Load the bar with 5 plates on each side, take it of the rack, barely bend their knees, re-rack it and start huffing and puffing like they actually did something! Straight up beast mode!!

Dude I was this guy when I 1st started lifting. I remember us squatting 4 plates and going between a 1/4 and 1/2 way down. If I had gone all the way down I would have never came back up.LOL An old timer actually talked to us about proper form and we changed the error of our ways. I can squat 315 for good reps now however my son can slap on 405 and do 12 reps ass to the ground no problem.

Haha! I think we've all done it at some point... 405 ass to grass is strong! I rarely go over 315 because my knees give me hell if i do. When and if I do decide to go up, I use the smith machine and take a big step out. Takes some of the pressure off but still let's me move heavier weight.

LOL Ace that's what we usually do. I'd kinda still like to help them though.

On the seated military presses the kid might not know it but he probably saved himself from a shoulder injury. Going too deep behind the head will catch up with you eventually.

But yea, I see so much crazy shit that just leaves me baffled. How about loading eight plates and only shrugging about 1",lol. All I can do is shake my head..

Harley1969's picture

I think we've all actually seen the 1" shrug. Good point about not going to low on the press.
