My boy Sarge stedanko started a very popular thread called "inspiring quotes". He hasn't been around lately. Probably off in some 3rd world shit hole shooting up some jihadi's so I'm Gona start another just for quotes period. Inspiring quotes are nice. But sometimes I'm feeling cynical or sarcastic and shit like that doesn't belong In an inspiring quotes section. Some of my favorites come from Winston Churchill. He was a sarcastic bastard and I love it. Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, among others. So post your favorite quotes. Doesn't matter the context. We all love a good quote. Originally it was a football term, but the Special Forces troops in SOG_MACV used it heavily. SOG was a special forces foward operating group than ran missions over the fence Cambodia & Laos. They couldn't talk about it for 20 years. Was usually two or three Americans and they had the opportunity to make their team larger with a up to a total of 9 montagnard tribesman(YARDS) they trained. They wreaked havoc on the enemy way behind enemy Lines in the Ho Chi Minh trail. Some teams only took a couple montagnards(YARDS) to move more swiftly... others said give me two Choppers I'm "Goin in the whole 9"! Legendary outfit
According to wikipedia, the origin of the phrase hasn't been established, but the first public use of it as an expression is in a US newspaper from 1907 referring to a Baseball game.

My thought is that the number is arbitrary. "I gave 100%" becomes, "giving 110%" which is out done by someone who gave a 1000%
Yeah, as you say, seven yards in 1907 is probably nine yards today...historical inflation.
Since the phrase has no established origin, I think that it has just evolved and become part of everyday speech, like so many other expressions.
The arbitary idea is good, but the 'nine yards' thing has been fairly consistent for about a century, so maybe there are some idioms that remain constant through being an abstract that doesn't need to evolve because it is still relevant, such as the many idioms we still use that were written by Shakespeare 400 years ago.

Lou Ferrigno always used to say I gave 110% on the apprentice show! Then one day somebody told him. "Is that even mathematically possible". I thought that was a great statement.
Never heard that one. Not disputing. The term was also used in excavation and such. A dump truck could hold nine yards. The saying would go Give me the whole nine yards meaning the entire dump truck.

Sorry mate. It's ok to believe in God - my wife is a very devout believer, and I never question her faith, but to believe the shit that guy posted is beyond the pale for me. You are a good guy, and maybe it is because of your religion, but you also have to get a grip on reality and a balance between faith and what is real. I DON"T SEE GOD DOING ANYTHING at this point in time, so for me it just all mumbo-jumbo primitive BS.
