lifting straps
ad
picked up a pair of lifting straps today, i have no idea why i haven't been using them before. i almost injured myself deadlifting 405# with a false grip this morning. i think i'm gonna try for 415 strapped tomorrow morning, even though it's my shoulder day i don't want to wait until next wednesday to use the straps.

I love straps but I like to start off with out them when I am dead-lifting just to try and build up my grip strength and then I will use them on the last two sets and go heavy as faurk.
yeah, i reached the limit of my grip strength a while ago and have been using false grip. the problem with false grip is that it's way too easy for me to lift at an angle, and i've tweaked one of my lats before doing the false grip deadlift incorrectly
yeah straps are an great training aid. Now when you train back try this little tip as well. Instead of just grabbing the bar and pullingit towards you think about pushing with your elbows and use your hands as hooks. If you know what I am saying.
CleyonI've heard of that method for pull-ups (and use it myself), but I don't understand that for DL.
what do you mean pushing with your elbows? i'm sitting here in my office trying to figure out that motion and not really getting it..
and update on the straps: pulled 405 no problem 5 times. put on another 10, 415 no prob for 5 times. thought fuck it, threw 20 on there: 435 3 times. I LOVE STRAPS! my goal is to pull 500 by the end of this cycle.
spud straps.. I have 2- 2inch wide pair..I also have hooks ( really old style) that i love.

yeah i think my harbingers are going to give out sooner than later. the padded wrist strap looks like it's going to get destroyed and start smelling bad in about a month! haha
CleyonI've gone through two pairs of the Harbingers, and now am using a set of Gasp ones that I love. My buddy has the Spuds straps and loves them, none of them are too expensive.
figure 8's work best for me and Ive used them all. Great for heavy shoulder shrugs, lat pulldowns, 1 arm dunbell rows etc. Be safe! dont try anything heavy enough to rip your arm out of its socket... leave that to me
AnonWell after reading this post, I went out and bought some straps, holy shit they are awesome. My back workout today was so much more intense, and without the fatigued forarms. Great thread guys
i know! i can't believe i went this long without them. plus it's probably all in my head, but i think i look like a beast with the straps on after i stand up from the bar and look int he mirror. lol
AnonI thought the same thing... like a animal who broke from his cage..great minds think alike
Straps will boost you to anothet level. I'm not very big but i can put the straps on the wheelbarrow shrug machine and rep 360 easy while the dumbells wrack my wrists without straps.
so far i freakin love the straps. usually i'm limited to around 225 on the behind the back barbell shrug, just because i don't have the grip strength to hold the bar like that for reps (bar starts to slip out after 3 or 4 reps then i'm concentrating on my grip and not my traps). yesterday shrugged 305 with straps no prob.
Bingo! Watch how the traps puff up now :).
e92i only use straps when i'm deadlifting. my hands sometimes just can not support the weight
I just got a pair of versa grips last weeks and they are pretty legit
Versa grips are great. I have a pair too ;)
i bought harbinger. just the regular one not the one with extra grip stuff. $10 at dicks, not bad.
I have the Harbinger straps, but found the extra grip is worth the extra money ;)
thanks for gracing my thread with your presense iheartyou! i used the straps this morning and they have PLENTY of grip without needing an extra rubber strip, and i like that the dangly piece is super easy to wrap around.
It's great to be welcomed into your thread DS. I'm glad you are pleased with your straps and the dangly piece ;)
dont use straps all the time. from personal experience yes my lifts went up big time..but i was an idiot and trained with them all the time..lost a ton of grip strength. so use them sparingly.
my grip starts to give out at 315lb, i've been above that weight on deadlift for a long time now and always have had to use false grip.
CleyonI've tried hooks and straps, and love them both! Straps are easier for me to carry around, and I've seen hooks bend at really heavy weight. Welcome to a new world.
56tooI use straps for all my back w/o unless its light with hi reps . I just feel t isolates my back muscles more rather than concentrating on trying to hold on to the bar
Straps help a ton, but IMO hooks are the way to go. I use Scheik hooks and my back has gotten a hell of a lot bigger after 4 months compared to straps. These hooks allow you pretty much isolate you back muscles because you dont burn your forearms out from gripping the bar before your back actually gets a workout.
