Is college really for me?
As most may know, I finished 5 years of honorable service in the USMC. I'm 24, and have been planning on going back to college, starting at a CC then transferring to UCSD. But lately I've been feeling that, why spend 4-6 years grinding through all this crap just for a piece of paper that states "This is my worth in America." This to mean feels like a huge waste of time; going through all this shit just to get a job to grind $. Right now my education plan is for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (pre med shit).
Whereas, I could do something I have genuine interest in and become a firefighter. I just don't feel that I would be experiencing much of life sitting in class all day for the next 4+ years. Like I've told everyone that asks me what the Corps was like. My answer? I learned more about life and the world, than I have in my entire life combined.

Both the IDF and Hamas don't care about the greater good and both use civilians as human shields. Israel just batter the whole of Gaza then wonder why Hamas are still recruiting fighters? Say I am a normal Gaza citizen and I mind my own business as does my family on a daily basis. Hamas as part of the community decide they are going to do something stupid and commit an act of aggression( one which I don't want any part of or have any knowledge they are going to do) so Israel then leathers my whole neighborhood killing my family and friends. Do you think I might want revenge? Who am I going to join? I'll never be able to get justice by myself, I can't take on a country and no one will fight for me.
Hamas are scum don't get me wrong and they seem to have no hesitation in focusing Israeli civilians. Israel has a right to defend itself I fully support and want peace for that region but that won't be achieved by the senseless slaughter of innocent civilians.
You don't fix one tragedy by creating another.
For the record I think you should at least try college to see if its for you, but I agree it all seems to trivial society's answer of sitting in a classroom to prove your worth. Especially when you've seen the wide world and know what life really should be about, being happy with whats important.

I suggest healing up man. You may not know it but taking lives really fucks you up. You can hide it, lie about it. Revel in it and lust for it. All signs that your not yet back a member of normal society.
I suggest doing some gardening. Doing community service. Trying out and helping a veterans suicide help line. Get your mind right brother. Your service didn't end at your eas. It is only beginning. Now its really time to show the world what A marine is. Loving, forgiving, compassionate. A real man.

I went into the culinary institute of america. It was founded for ww2 veterans. I have cooked at some of the best restaruants in the world now because I went to college. I cooked for Bpourdain, ramsey, etc etc...
What do you love to do?
I say dont rush it. It took me years to recall what I loved after the war.

Look into private military for cargo ships.
Or, go to school on the GI Bill... freshmen bitches love military, and you'll have a lot of fun. Especially when taking the bare minimum classes, you'll find most days are a lot like hanging around the barracks bullshitting.

im in a pharm D program. classes are hard. but its worth it. basically all pharm d programs are 4 years. if you like working with people its a good career choice. i enjoy what i study too, and that helps.
Well IMO got to school for engineering and then move your happy ass to china and make bank since USA is owned by them anyway make a smart choice lol
That is great as far as the IDF. A team mate of mine from the navy has duel citizenship US and Israel. He is currently with the IDF and loves it. I get over to Israel quite often and I believe it is a noble service. So good luck to you!

IMO You need to at least go for two years. You can take all the civil service tests you want while your in school. Remember there is a list of people to get called to be a FF and it may be a list that is one or two years. Some places more.
After those two years I say access your situation.
Firefighting may be the closest thing to the rush that you felt when you were in the Marine Corp. That may be something that you need to consider. It really just depends on how well you have been able to adjust since you've been out. In today's society, more times than not if you don't have a college education then you stand a good chance of living pay check to pay check for the rest of your life. Take it from me it FUCKING SUCKS! Ultimately the choice is yours.
AnonWill you earn enough as a FF to live a good life ? I feel fortunate that I can support my self and family, but I have always felt my poor choices in my educational years limited the choices I had available to me. If you can afford the school and have been accepted then go and take advantage of that GI bill. You can still be a FF after that.
I sort of went through this. Right out of high school, I went straight to a major state university. I really didn't have a clear life plan. After 2 years, I dropped out. They put you in so many classes that are boring, heavy on minutia, and unrelated to what you want to do. However, after 4 years of working joe-sixpack type jobs, I realized that I didn't want to make $10/hr and be doing manual labor the rest of my life. So I went back, older and wiser, and finished my degree when I was 27. I'm not doing exactly what my degree was designed for now, but I make good money with benefits, and am able to support a wife and 2 kids. I feel like college gave me critical thinking skills that people who don't go to college never develop.
If I were you, I'd still go to community college, focus hard on your grades, and then reevaluate. At that point, you can see what degrees/skills are in demand, and decide what direction to go. Class time is very minimal, and if you give 10% more focus than the other guy sitting next to you in class, you'll get straight A's. Degrees used to really mean something, and now everyone has one. However, if you don't have one in today's market, you'll be passed over.
It depends what you want to do bro. I would say your general business degree is becoming less valuable here in the United States. You are still young man and you can do any field you choose. I'm 23 and in med school. Anything medical you are guaranteed to do well, as long as you have a brain. There are things such as becoming a pharmacist that doesn't require the time like a dr but worst case scenario you are guaranteed 110-120k a year for 3 days a week. There are other med professions that don't take time but are beneficial. Once you finish your Pre med Pre reqs you could do dr of physical therapy (3 years) or pharmacist (3 years at some schools)
