HOW MUCH DO YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO

ad

So this has been a topic with me and my boys for a bit.... Just getting your opinion, as i value MOST of yours lol..... If you had a job that doesnt pay the best, but the schedule allows you to workout when you like too, gives you the days off when you need them. Then you could take a job that pays a bit better, but its seasonal with the possibility of going on with them full time.... The hours would be way different then what your body likes for lifting, and you would have to workout when the gym is crowded as fuck...... So that was rambling lol but the question is would you stay at the job that pays less, but you have stability and allows you to have the schedule you need for lifting. OR take the chance with the other job that pays more, but could not last, and would make you workout when you absolutely hate it??????? Just getting feedback, now GO......lol

Stability. I'm pretty happy in my 3 jobs. I work thursday/weekend nights DJ'ing, Mon and Weds nights running a therapy group for recovering addicts at my doctor's office, and have a Mon/Wed/Fri internship at a local rehab center. Hours are great, and on weekdays until thursday, I finish working by 7PM. Weekends I have virtually all the gym time in the world as my gym is only open until 6PM and I don't have to start setting up for DJ'ing gigs until around 7-7:30PM. I love what I do

HAHA GODDAMN shit got heated up in here. First, i have never been on unemployment, never will. The man reason i am skeptical about taking it is because of the seasonal work, while making more money would be fucking great, what happens if i dont keep it, bam right back to looking for a job. Then again, i know i can work my ass off and most likely get a fulltime position, so.............. who knows lol...... Ya i can change my routine, will just take time to get use too. For the most part, i think i will take it, i just like getting feed back before i make any major decisions. You fuckers cracked me up lol..... But no i will not take unemployment, i will not look forward to it if i get laid off. I will take a burger flipping job before i would take that....

jprizzle's picture

there is nothing wrong with using unemployment insurance if you need it or dont want to flip burgers when you could better use that time to find a decent job.
Every week around 15%(higher or lower depending on what line of work you are in) of what your check total is ,is paid by your employer towards unemployment insurance in your name. ......its not like being on welfare or whatever, its insurance that you paid by working. not saying its ok to be lazy and take advantage of it though.

Undertaker's picture

The employee does not pay anything for unemployment. Nothing is paid on there behalf. The employer is required to pay a unemployment insurance TAX to the state, in addition taxes are used by the federal government to provide subsidies to the states for their unemployment deficits.

jprizzle's picture

I said the employer pays it. but you working is why it gets paid. it is paid by what you make. thats why if you only make like 8 grand a year you cant get unemployment if you lose your job. had to go to classes back when I was in a trades union abd they explained all of this to us. Then when you first get unemployment the Employer has to pay the first 2 weeks of it.(not directly too you but to the state)

Undertaker's picture

I am the employer, I did not go to a class to have somebody explain it to me. I live it. If you were on the other side of the table you would change your tune. Here is the way it really works.

The amount of tax paid is an "experience rate" which is set each year based on claims for unemployment the employer has had against it. And positive balance employer is an employer who has paid more into the system than they has been paid out in claims to former employees. A negative balance employer is one for whom more has been paid in claims than the employer paid into the system. An employer with a good experience rate probably is paying only around .06% tax on the first $9,000 an employee makes. A negative balance employer could be paying 3% or more.

There is also a FUTA or Federal Unemployment Tax which employers pay, again based on payroll. Its usually somewhere around .05%, with credit given for amounts paid into the state systems, and the Federal Government uses that money to subsidize state systems.

jprizzle's picture

i know look at the post under this one. I realized i was wrong in how they were paying.

jprizzle's picture

my percentages may be off. I think they just told us it was 15% to make it easier to explain. but depending on the type of work it is the employer has too pay more or less.
They base it on the history of that field and how may people are get laid off and how often

Undertaker's picture

YOu dont have to be "laid off" to file for unemployment. Which is why an employer has the right to contest.

jprizzle's picture

anyways my original point was he shouldnt feel guilty if he had to use unemployment insurance because its being paid into for that reason just like health insurance.
.........I think i got that 15% from workmans comp maybe?

jprizzle's picture

so they just look at turnover rate no matter how it happens? in other words the employer has to pay more if people quit or get fired alot?

Undertaker's picture

If they quit on their own behalf, no. Any termination, yes.

Undertaker's picture

however even if they quit they can still file and it is the employer that must contest the claim.

Obviously someone hasn't tried getting a student loan recently lol I'm in med school and had to pay 25k for this year it's actually not that easy to get loans.

Love you uncle zewi

I am thinking physical therapy, i would love to be in that industry help people who really need it... My job now does do some financial help with school..... They will also let me go part time if i ever needed it for school.... i am leaning towards staying there, just seems better long term which is what i need....

Undertaker's picture

If you can take it, my industry is one of the most secure you'll find. Always in demand.

killinit88's picture

haha no need to apologize man, you guys just speaking your mind. Thats why i posted to get opinions..... Also i am with both of you and the unemployment thing, so preach on lol

Nitti's picture

I would go with the job that pays more and find the time for training. In this economy, it's a no brainer imo. it won't take u long to change your routine and adapt to a new gym time. My post below, i misunderstood the question

jkc's picture

X2. So many work places are providing gyms also. I get reimburssed for going to the gym. It pays 85% of my monthly membership. I have to be creative in my workouts and gym times, but it all pays off in the end.

Shop Steward ehh".. Me too

jprizzle's picture

I have a full size gym right at my work:) 100% free for tenants and employees. It is a huge very high rent office building. I have been going twice a day for awhile now . Once in the morning before and either at lunch or after work depending if i have to work for my other part time job that day.

Nitti's picture

Lol, My man!

The choices you make now will reflect good or bad in the future. Sacrifice and work hard now for a better future or enjoy life now and work harder when you are older.
I mix it, even though I work alot and always have. I find time to enjoy myself. I currently work the midnight shift 11pm-7am, and close to 16-20hrs ot per week.I have a very physical job.Lets just say that when your lights go out I fix it. Every job is different. Cut a tree here, climb a pole there, fix a broke pole some drunk hit. So there are times that it's hard to make a workout or easy to cheat on a meal. I love my job, it's very dangerous rewarding and challenging. We make good money and have a decent lifestyle.
To answer your question: That depends on you/family. You can enjoy life and make money. Just don't get greedy and put money over the family. If you stay healthy it's so much easier.I mix my workouts, sometimes before work sometimes after. My body and how I feel dictates that.
I tell my kids " If you find something you enjoy doing, you will never work another day" Find a career you enjoy.

Nitti's picture

I work 11 hour days. I'm basically a maintenence man. I take care of 7 commercial warehouses along with 5 other guys. Everything from electric, plumbing ,HVAC, Iron work, hydrolics, pnuematics, etc. I don't mind my job so much because i'm never doing the same thing twice. I get calls for different things every day and i'm never in 1 spot. The hours are ehh. Being a union shop stewart I have mandatory overtime. I can't leave until the crew is done. But it falls in line with my gym time perfetly. By 6pm im in the gym. Usually get home at 8pm. I don't mind it at all.
But as for the pay, it could be better. I'm about $5 an hour less than industry standard BUT, I aslo pay nothing for healthcare and I NEED THAT!

scoobydoo's picture

The seasonal job would have to pay a lot better for me to consider taking it.And,when you get laid off you would be able to collect unemployment.Depending on where you collect out of,that can be a good chunk of change. That would allow you to workout anytime.

Undertaker's picture

I try to be nice, but this kind of stuff will make me RAGE.

scoobydoo's picture

If you knew anything about unemployment, you would know that it is an insurance that companies pay.It is not welfare and does not affect your taxes.

Undertaker's picture

I could write a page on what a dumbas...... f it, not even worth it.

Undertaker's picture

I own and operate a business and work my ass off So that idiots like you can sit on your ass. In that sense you are right that does kinda make me the idiot.

scoobydoo's picture

First of all,I am not an idiot.I work in one of the construction trades.Work is available spring and fall. The things I work on could affect the safety of the world.Talk to anyone that does seasonal work or is in a union. You work when there is work and you collect when there is no work.I am not going to take a job that pays less than my unemployment.

Undertaker's picture

dont get me started. Ill get throuwn off eroids if I start down that path.

scoobydoo's picture

I've been out of school for almost 30 years.

Undertaker's picture

Great so you sqaundered my parents tax dollars as well...going to school and actually getting educated are 2 different things. IM DONE WITH YOU

scoobydoo's picture

I said almost 30.It's been 28,is that better?

It doesn't seem like you are smart enough to write a whole page.

I hope you are joking.

I work a fucked up schedule (swing shift) and sometimes a lot of hours; for example, I worked 112 hrs. two weeks ago (that is not a typo) and yes that was one week (7 days times 16 hrs. per day). However, I have a damn good lifestyle: nice house, new cars, travel trailor, and my kids go on awesome vacations. Now, I have to work harder to get make gains in the gym. My diet has to be spot on all the time and when I workout, I have to hit the weights hard. Am happy with the gains, although they are slower than most. I could get the ideal job as a school teacher, however, you must think ahead. I would have to take a 50 percent pay cut (yes that much). Life is short and you need to ask yourself: do you want to be drinking margaritas on the beach at 60 yrs. old or working just to survive? The choice is yours.
